Simba famously told us in The Lion King he laughed in the face of danger, and Adley Rutschman certainly did the same in the face of those wondering if there would be a sophomore slump for the young catcher. The 25 year old backstop was a key cog of the AL East champion Orioles lineup finishing as the eighth-most valuable fantasy catcher and the only catcher who could claim at least 20 homers, 80+ RBIs as well as 80+ runs on their resume. If not for the misconfiguration of left field in Camden, Rutschman would have joined Cal Raleigh as the only catcher with 30 homers but that monstrosity is where most pulled flyballs go to die. Rutschman has already earned a reputation for a very discernable eye at the plate as he walks nearly as often as he strike out which is a rarity for both his age and his position. Baltimore values the bat and gave him 46 games at DH so he provides plenty of volume with the added bonus of hitting first or second in the lineup. Simply put, the acquisition cost is worth it.

  • Orioles' Adley Rutschman: Slow start in spring

Rutschman has gone 1-for-9 over his first four Grapefruit League games. On the bright side, that one hit is a home run. Rutschman's spring numbers will ultimately mean very little -- he's the Orioles' No. 1 catcher and will likely focus on getting back in sync with the pitching staff more than his performance at the plate for now. He hit .277 with an .809 OPS and 20 homers over 154 contests in 2023.

The star catcher would then tack on another run with an RBI single in the fifth as Baltimore went on to win its fourth straight. Rutschman has now recorded multiple hits in four of his last six games while the home run marked his fourth this month and 20th on the season. He's also drawn at least one walk in four consecutive games.

  • Orioles' Adley Rutschman: Gets rare day off

Rutschman is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox. Rutschman often serves as a designated hitter on days that he doesn't catch, but he'll get a proper day off Wednesday in what marks just his third absence from the lineup since the All-Star break. With James McCann stepping in behind the dish, Ryan Mountcastle will get a look as the Orioles' designated hitter. The day off comes while Rutschman has been running hot at the plate, as he's recorded at least one hit in eight of his last nine starts while slashing .333/.366/.359.
