  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Loses control in ninth

Fairbanks (4-3) took the loss and blew a save Friday, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk while recording just one out in the 5-4 defeat to the Red Sox. Fairbanks ran into trouble in the ninth. After retiring the first batter he faced, the 31-year-old issued a walk to Roman Anthony before surrendering a walk-off two-run homer that erased the Rays' late lead. It marked just his third blown save of the season, but the right-hander has now allowed multiple runs in three of his last 10 appearances, a stretch that has dented an otherwise solid 2025 campaign.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Moves to 4-2

Fairbanks (4-2) allowed a hit over 1.2 scoreless innings and picked up a win during Sunday's extra-inning victory against Minnesota. He struck out one. Fairbanks recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning after Mason Montgomery allowed a game-tying home run to Harrison Bader. Fairbanks then tossed a scoreless ninth to send the game to extras. It was his first win since May 10, and he hasn't earned a save since June 26. Fairbanks dropped his ERA to 2.34 with a 30:14 K:BB through 34.2 frames.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Bounces back

Fairbanks struck out two across a scoreless ninth inning without allowing a baserunner Tuesday against the Athletics. Fairbanks took his second loss of the season in Monday's outing against the Athletics, but he immediately got the chance to bounce back. He was sharp and managed to redeem himself, though he has allowed multiple earned runs in two of his last seven appearances. Fairbanks allowed multiple runs only twice in his first 27 outings to begin the campaign.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Secures 15th save

Fairbanks held Kansas City scoreless for a two-out save in Thursday's 4-0 win, allowing no hits or walks with no strikeouts. Fairbanks was called upon with two men on in the ninth and induced a game-ending double play to earn his second save in as many days. Over nine June appearances, the 31-year-old has allowed just two earned runs while converting five of six save chances. For the season, he's 15-for-17 in save opportunities with a 2.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB across 31 innings.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Nails down 14th save

Fairbanks picked up the save in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Royals, throwing a clean ninth inning with no strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-hander nailed down his 14th save of the season, also posting his 12th scoreless outing in his last 13 appearances. During that span, he owns a 1.35 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 10:5 K:BB covering 13.1 frames. Fairbanks has a 7.7 K/9 for the campaign, which would be a career low if it sticks, but he still has a 2.08 ERA and has converted 14 of his 16 save opportunities in 31 appearances.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Can't convert save Monday

Fairbanks blew a save opportunity against the Red Sox on Monday, giving up two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter in 1.1 innings. Rays manager Kevin Cash turned to Fairbanks in a key spot with two outs and a runner on base in the bottom of the eighth frame. The right-hander got Jarren Duran to strike out to preserve a one-run lead, and he looked to be in a great position to close things out after Tampa Bay added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. However, Fairbanks couldn't get the job done -- he allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning to allow the game to go into extra frames. The blown save was just the second in 14 attempts for Fairbanks this season, and it was his first since May 8. Prior to Monday, the veteran closer hadn't allowed an earned run in any of his previous nine appearances.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Collects 12th save

Fairbanks worked a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his 12th save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Marlins. The right-hander didn't walk or strike out a batter, instead getting two flyballs before Taylor Walls made a leaping grab on a Javier Sanoja line drive for the final out. Fairbanks has been tagged for earned runs in only one of his last 18 appearances dating back to April 23, posting a 1.04 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB through 17.1 innings over that stretch while converting nine of 10 save chances.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Tallies save vs. Rangers

Fairbanks tallied the save in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Rangers, giving up one unearned run on one hit with no strikeouts in the ninth inning. Fairbanks still hasn't conceded an earned run since May 13, which has been a stretch of seven outings. The 31-year-old right-hander continues to be locked in as Tampa Bay's closer, logging a 1.10 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB over his last 16.1 innings. Fairbanks has successfully converted eight of his nine save chances during that period.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Earns 10th save of 2025

Fairbanks earned the save in Friday's 3-1 win over the Blue Jays. He issued two walks without allowing a hit or recording a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning. Fairbanks was brought in to protect the Rays' two-run lead, and he was able to work around two walks to come away with his 10th save of the season (and second in as many days). He needed 21 pitches (11 strikes) to get through the frame, which could impact his availability for Sunday's series finale. Fairbanks has a 2.05 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 22:12 K:BB across 22 innings this season.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Notches ninth save

Fairbanks walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his ninth save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays. The right-hander picked up his first save since May 4, but the drought was due to a lack of opportunities rather than effectiveness -- Fairbanks has blown only one save chance all season, and that came on an unearned run. Through 9.2 innings in May, Fairbanks has produced a 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Clean ninth inning

Fairbanks threw a scoreless ninth inning without allowing a baserunner Saturday against the Marlins. Fairbanks entered the game in the ninth inning with a four-run lead for his first appearance since Tuesday. It was a good bounce-back effort for him, as he allowed two earned runs in a similar situation his last time out. Fairbanks has now held opponents scoreless in 16 of his 19 outings this season, though he hasn't picked up a save since May 4.

The 31-year-old bounced back from his first blown save of the season Thursday, though he did need 26 pitches to finish the frame. On the season, he owns a 1.65 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB across 16.1 innings while converting eight of nine save chances.

Fairbanks was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth and struck out the top of the Yankees' order on 15 pitches. The 31-year-old has now converted save chances on back-to-back days for the second time this season and has been scored upon only once in his past 10 outings. He's a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities while posting a 2.03 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB across 13.1 innings this season.

Fairbanks sent the Padres down in order to pick up his third save in the last four days. Sunday capped off a big week for Fairbanks who pitched 3.2 scoreless innings while picking up three saves and a win in four appearances. The 31-year-old owns a 2.38 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB in 11.1 innings.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Notches save No. 5

Fairbanks earned the save Saturday in San Diego as he struck out one and gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning. The right-hander allowed a one-out double to Manny Machado but otherwise had no issues with the heart of the Padres lineup. Fairbanks has delivered three straight scoreless appearances and has converted all five of his save chances this year. He has a 2.61 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB across 10.1 innings as he's looking to produce his third straight year of 20-plus saves.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Collects fourth save Thursday

Fairbanks earned the save in Thursday's 7-4 extra-inning win over the Diamondbacks after allowing one walk in a scoreless 10th inning. He struck out one. It didn't appear initially that Fairbanks would be in action Thursday, but the Rays scored a run in the ninth inning to force extras and plated three more in the 10th to create a save opportunity for the closer. Even though the hard-throwing right-hander has a concerning 1.50 WHIP and 9:6 K:BB over 9.1 innings, he's converted each of his first four save chances and has a 2.89 ERA. Fairbanks' control issues could eventually come back to haunt him, but he has some decent stability as Tampa Bay's No. 1 option for saves coming off back-to-back 20-save campaigns.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Collects first save

Fairbanks picked up the save in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Rockies, pitching a scoreless inning while allowing two hits. He struck out two. Fairbanks worked around two hits to lock down his first save of 2025, securing the win with a punchout of Mickey Moniak to end the game. The right-handed flamethrower has notched 64 career saves with the Rays, which ranks fifth in franchise history. After an uneven 45.1 innings with a 3.57 ERA in 2024, Fairbanks looks secure in his role as the Tampa Bay closer, opening the season with a 4:2 K:BB in his first two innings.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Picks up win vs. Rockies

Fairbanks (1-0) got the win over the Rockies on Friday, working a scoreless ninth inning with two walks and two strikeouts in the 3-2 win. The Rays' closer put two men on in the ninth inning with walks, but one of them was erased when pinch runner Mickey Moniak was caught stealing second base. Jordan Beck, however, was successful with a stolen base, but Fairbanks struck out Brenton Doyle to end the inning. The Rays walked it off in the bottom of the ninth, which made Fairbanks the winning pitcher of record.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Minimal usage in spring

Fairbanks has thrown 1.2 innings across two appearances in the Grapefruit League. Fairbanks ended the 2024 season on the injured list with a lat injury, so the fact that he's had a healthy spring is positive. While he hasn't seen much game action, he's projected to serve as the Rays' primary closer once the regular season kicks off.

  • Rays' Pete Fairbanks: Won't return this season

Fairbanks (lat) is progressing in his rehab program but won't have enough time to return from the 15-day injured list before the end of the regular season, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. The right-hander landed on the shelf in mid-August due to a lat strain and was able to resume throwing at the end of the month, but he won't have enough time to build up to game readiness before the end of the campaign. Fairbanks will finish the season with 23 saves and a 3.57 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB across 45.1 innings. He should be fully healthy in plenty of time for spring training.
