Pittsburgh selected Beer from the Diamondbacks in the minor-league phase of Wednesday's Rule 5 Draft. Beer never quite got it going at the major-league level in Arizona, but he holds a career .863 OPS on the farm and is only 27 years old. He could get a legitimate look with the Pirates at first base or DH at some point in 2024.... See More ... See Less

Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Sent outright to Triple-A
Arizona outrighted Beer to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Beer was recently moved off the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster to clear a spot for starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt. In 79 plate appearances with Reno this season, Beer has slashed just .200/.266/.314. The 2018 first-round pick will remain in the organization but will likely be a depth option for the rest of the 2023 campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Loses 40-man spot
The Diamondbacks designated Beer for assignment Wednesday. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Reno ahead of Wednesday's game against the Rangers. The 26-year-old Beer had yet to appear in the majors this season and slashed .200/.266/.314 in 79 plate appearances with Reno. His poor numbers at Triple-A and lack of defensive flexibility mean he's unlikely to be claimed off waivers.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Optioned to Triple-A
Beer was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Beer clubbed two home runs in 10 spring training games but hit just .231 and was unable to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 26-year-old played in 38 contests for Arizona last season and had a .189/.278/.243 slash line.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Sent to minors
Beer was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday. Beer was recalled by Arizona at the start of August but will return to the minors after going 4-for-30 in 11 games. Overall, the 25-year-old has a .189/.278/.243 slash line with one home run and nine RBI in 126 plate appearances in the majors this season.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Resting Saturday
Beer isn't starting Saturday against the Rockies. Beer went 0-for-3 during Friday's loss to the Rockies, and he'll retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Emmanuel Rivera is serving as the designated hitter and batting second.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Riding pine Thursday
Beer isn't starting Thursday against the Pirates. Beer started the last three games and went 1-for-6 with three walks. He'll get a breather while Josh Rojas serves as the designated hitter with Emmanuel Rivera starting at the hot corner.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Out of Sunday's lineup
Beer is not in the lineup Sunday against Colorado. Beer started the last two games and will exit the lineup after going 2-for-6 with two strikeouts. Ketel Marte will rest his legs as the designated hitter while Emmanuel Rivera receives a start in the infield.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Heads to bench Wednesday
Beer isn't starting Wednesday against the Guardians. Beer is getting a breather after he went 0-for-8 with three strikeouts over the last two games. Ketel Marte will serve as the designated hitter while Emmanuel Rivera starts at third base.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Back with Diamondbacks
Beer was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday. Beer has played for Reno since being optioned there in mid-May, but he will get another chance at the top level after posting a 1.044 OPS over his last 26 Triple-A contests. Beer will serve as Arizona's designated hitter Monday night and is the favorite to be the primary option at that spot moving forward.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Sent to Triple-A
Beer was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Beer has a .210/.301/.284 slash line this season and is 2-for-42 over his past 14 games, resulting in his demotion. The 25-year-old could rejoin the big-league club later in the year, but for now he'll attempt to right the ship with Reno. Sean Poppen (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Gets breather Saturday
Beer isn't starting Saturday against the Cubs. Beer drew starts in the last two matchups and went 1-for-7 with two strikeouts. Daulton Varsho will serve as the designated hitter while Jose Herrera starts behind the plate Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Ends massive hitless streak
Beer went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 11-3 loss to the Marlins. Beer's seventh-inning single must have felt good, as it snapped an 0-for-37 skid. He was Arizona's best hitter the first two weeks of the season, but as the rest of the team started to hit, Beer went the other way.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Out against lefty
Beer is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins. The lefty-hitting Beer typically finds himself on the bench against southpaws, so his absence from the lineup comes as little surprise with lefty Jesus Luzardo on the bump for Miami. Beer may soon lose out on work against right-handers, too; in 68 plate appearances versus righties this season, Beer is slashing .175/.294/.246, good for a 61 wRC+ mark.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Out of Sunday's lineup
Beer is not in the lineup Sunday against the Rockies. The lefty-hitting Beer, mired in an 0-for-32 stretch, will sit for the second consecutive game Sunday, this time with a right-hander in German Marquez pitching for Colorado. Cooper Hummel will bat leadoff as the designated hitter in the series finale.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: On bench against left-hander
Beer isn't starting Saturday's game against the Rockies. Beer started in the last two games and went 0-for-7 with an RBI and two strikeouts, but he'll get a breather against southpaw Kyle Freeland on Saturday. Cooper Hummel will serve as the designated hitter and lead off.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Sits against southpaw
Beer will hit the bench against lefty Tyler Rogers and the Marlins on Tuesday. Beer has now been on the bench against six of the eight southpaws the Diamondbacks have faced this season. Jordan Luplow will be the designated hitter Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Not starting Wednesday
Beer isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Beer will get a breather after he went 0-for-10 with three walks and two strikeouts in his last four appearances. Matt Davidson will serve as the designated hitter and bat third.... See More ... See Less -
Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Drives in three
Beer went 3-for-4 with three RBI in Wednesday's 11-2 win over Washington. Beer, who had been in and out of the lineup to start the season, has started five of the last six games. All of those starts have come against right-handers, and it's not clear if Arizona manager Torey Lovullo will make Beer a full-timer regardless of the opposing pitcher. One thing for certain is that Beer has been the team's best hitter since Opening Day, when he hit a walk-off home run. The lefty-swinging first baseman/DH is slashing .438/.486/.625 with a team-high eight RBI through 11 games. The teammate nearest him in average is Pavin Smith, who is batting .219.... See More ... Diamondbacks' Seth Beer: Heads to bench Sunday
Beer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. With southpaw David Peterson on the hill for New York, the lefty-hitting Beer will take a seat following two straight starts over which he went 4-for-7 with a double and a walk. Carson Kelly will serve as the Diamondbacks' designated hitter in Beer's stead.... See More ... See Less

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG24M agoLast year it was Rob Zastryzny. This season, even more unexpected stuff from the Pirates bullpen. Here's my analysis from a win that I still can't believe actually happened: https://t.co/b30xBFkPYI

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG44M agoOne of the reasons the Pirates won, of course, was the work of the bullpen. Here's @_NoahHiles on that aspect of the game, as well as his postgame YouTube reaction video with @fugimaster24: https://t.co/t6W31T38PO

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG45M ago"First one's the hardest. Got it out of the way." ... The Pirates' opening day victory yesterday was something. Wasn't pretty, but they did figure out a way to get it done against the Marlins: https://t.co/tTMvw204b0

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG2H agoWoke up this morning and realized the Pirates won yesterday despite going 2 for 17 w/RISP (13 LOB), making a number of mistakes in the field and on the bases and by leaning on a bullpen (6.1 IP, 0 R) missing 3 of its top 5. My reaction (@_NoahHiles): https://t.co/Q0cwXbYcFg

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf12H agoJose Hernandez wasn’t supposed to be here Thursday. He got the save on Opening Day. Let’s take a look at the Pirates’ bizarre path to 1-0: https://t.co/sXhu5qk86H

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf15H agoThat's game. Pirates 6, Marlins 5, 12 innings. What a ballgame. Oneil Cruz hit a game-tying homer in the eighth. Bryan Reynolds and Edward Olivares also went deep. Luis Ortiz SHOVES. Jose Hernandez, who wasn't even supposed to be here, gets his first save. The Pirates are 1-0.

Alex Stumpf@AlexJStumpf16H agoA Josh Bell throw home just severely hurt the Pirates' chances of winning this game. https://t.co/pSYpmTTr8o

Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG17H agoFrustrating sixth for the Pirates. They get Luzardo out. Two on, nobody out, Cutch swings 3-1 on a breaking ball. Winds up striking out. Davis beats out a dribbler, then Cruz & Triolo look at called third strikes. Had a chance that inning & squandered it.
-
Jason Mackey@JMackeyPG17H agoPirates are obviously having a tough time with Jesus Luzardo. The lefty has struck out 8 through 5 IP. Pirates have 18 whiffs, 10 on Luzardo's slider.
