  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Sent outright to Triple-A

The Padres outrighted Knehr (elbow) to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Knehr underwent Tommy John surgery this past August and is likely to be sidelined for much -- if not all -- of the 2024 season. The 27-year-old reliever no longer holds a 40-man roster spot in San Diego.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Gets Tommy John surgery

Padres manager Bob Melvin said July 21 that Knehr (elbow) would require season-ending Tommy John surgery, MLB.com reports. Knehr has presumably had the procedure at some point over the ensuing four weeks and will now miss the rest of the 2023 season, and likely, the majority of the 2024 campaign. Before landing on the shelf in late June with the elbow injury, Knehr gave up 10 earned runs on 10 hits and five walks over 5.2 innings across four appearances with the Friars.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Moved to 60-day IL

Knehr (elbow) was transferred Tuesday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for catcher Luis Campusano, who was activated from the 60-day injured list after recovering from May surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament. Knehr remains sidelined indefinitely with a right elbow strain and won't be eligible for activation until at least late August.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Lands on injured list

The Padres placed Knehr on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Knehr was asked to start Tuesday's game on short notice, as Yu Darvish was scratched due to illness. Knehr surrendered five runs over two innings, and he reportedly experienced elbow discomfort toward the end of his start. Ray Kerr is expected to be called up from Triple-A to replace Knehr, and Knehr will be eligible to return immediately after the All-Star break.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Hit hard in spot start

Knehr (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks over two innings against the Pirates. He struck out one. Knehr, called up to fill in for Yu Darvish (illness) on Tuesday, was tagged for three runs in the second inning before surrendering a pair of solo home runs in the third. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed 10 runs while sporting a 2.65 WHIP through just 5.2 innings this season. Knehr will likely return to Triple-A, where he'll serve as a depth option for the Padres.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Called upon for spot start

Knehr will start Tuesday against Pittsburgh, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Yu Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start due to illness, so Knehr will temporarily fill in as San Diego's starter. The 26-year-old righty has made six major-league starts and holds a 5.24 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through 46.1 innings throughout his MLB career.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Sent down by Padres

Knehr was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Knehr joined the Padres' bullpen last week after active rosters expanded to 28 players, but he gave up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two in 1.2 innings during his lone appearance following his promotion. He'll head back to the minors since Pierce Johnson (elbow) is expected to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list Saturday.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Short stint in spot start

Knehr didn't factor into the decision in a 3-2 win over the Rockies during the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out one and also hit two batters with pitches. Making his first big-league start of the year, Knehr needed 82 pitches (48 strikes) to record only 11 outs before getting the hook, and his line could have been a lot worse as he exited with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Fortunately for the Padres, none of those runners came around to score. Knehr will likely head back to Triple-A El Paso with a 1.50 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB through 12 MLB innings.

Knehr will be pitching for the Padres for the first time since July 12 and just the fourth time all season. He hasn't allowed a run through 8.1 big-league innings in 2022, but he owns a 6.85 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 67 frames at Triple-A.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Recalled from El Paso

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Optioned to Triple-A

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Moved to Triple-A

Knehr was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. He tossed 4.2 scoreless innings during mop-up duty Saturday against the Rockies, and he will head back down until the Padres have need of another fresh bullpen arm. Kyle Tyler takes Knehr's spot in the bullpen.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Impresses in long relief

Knehr tossed 4.2 scoreless frames in long relief but didn't factor into the decision Saturday in the Padres' 6-2 loss to the Rockies in the second game of a doubleheader. He scattered three hits and walked none while striking out three. Knehr was one of two pitchers summoned from Triple-A El Paso in advance of the twin bill after fellow hurlers Mike Clevinger and Adrian Morejon were placed on the COVID-19-related injured list. Though he performed admirably in long relief after starter MacKenzie Gore was chased midway through the third inning, Knehr's 65-pitch workload means he likely won't be available out of the bullpen for at least the next couple of days. As a result, Knehr could be a candidate for a demotion back to El Paso if the Padres want to swap him out for a fresh arm in the bullpen.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Misses out on Opening Day roster

The Padres optioned Knehr to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Even though they swapped out two pitchers (Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan) for one (Taylor Rogers) in a trade with the Twins earlier in the day, the Padres didn't have room in the rotation or bullpen for Knehr on the Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old lefty will likely prepare to fill a starting role for El Paso and stay stretched out in the event the Padres require reinforcement for the rotation at some point down the road.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Draws praise from manager

Padres manager Bob Melvin indicated recently that he's pleased with Knehr's work this spring, per Bill Center of FriarWire. "I like Knehr's stuff. He throws strikes, has a good breaking ball. He's got late movement to it. He's got a lot of confidence in what he is doing now based on the fact that he was in the big leagues last year. I like his progress," Melvin stated. Knehr got into one Cactus League game this spring, allowing one run (on a solo homer) over two innings while striking out three. However, he also worked on his pitching on the back fields and evidently impressed his manager. Knehr posted a 4.97 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 20:20 K:BB across 29 innings for San Diego last season, and it's not clear if he'll have a spot on on the 2022 Opening Day roster.

  • Padres' Reiss Knehr: Yields two runs in loss

Knehr (1-2) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over three innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Giants. Knehr kept the Giants off the board for two innings to start the game before Buster Posey brought home two runs with a third-inning single. The 24-year-old rookie finished the 2021 season with a 4.97 ERA and a 20:20 K:BB through 29 innings. He went 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA over his last four outings. He'll have a shot at making the staff next season, though the starting rotation for the contending Padres seems likely to be staffed by more experienced arms.
