Irvin was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right ankle tendinitis, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Irvin suffered the season-ending injury during his start Thursday against Atlanta, in which he surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and three walks over just 2.2 innings of work. He'll finish the 2023 campaign with a 3-7 record, 4.61 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 99:54 K:BB in 121 innings (24 starts) for the Nationals.... See More ... See Less

Nationals' Jake Irvin: Crushed in seventh loss
Irvin (3-7) took the loss Thursday against Atlanta, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out one. After tossing a solid 23 innings across four August starts to the tune of a 2.35 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB, Irvin has had a rough time in September. Over four outings this month, he's produced a 6.38 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 15:13 K:BB over 18.1 innings. Irvin tentatively lines up for a rematch with Atlanta for his final start of the season next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Quality start against Dodgers
Irvin came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Nationals' 7-6 extra-innings win over the Dodgers, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. The 26-year-old righty delivered his fourth quality start in his last five outings and out-pitched more heralded rookie Bobby Miller in the process, but Irvin saw his potential fourth win of the season slip away when Kyle Finnegan blew the save in the ninth. Since the beginning of August, Irvin has produced an impressive 2.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB through 34 innings as he looks to lock himself into the Nats' 2024 rotation plans. He's next set to take the mound next weekend in Milwaukee.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Another no-decision Friday
Irvin came away with a no-decision Friday in the Nationals' 8-5 extra-innings loss to the Marlins, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out four. The right-hander got the hook after 80 pitches (44 strikes) with the score tied 3-3, marking his seventh straight start without a decision and snapping his quality start streak at three. Irvin has pitched relatively well over that stretch, however, posting a 3.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB through 39.1 innings. With Washington looking to manage the workload of its younger arms, the 26-year-old likely won't take the mound again until next weekend in a home start against the Dodgers.... See More ... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Strong outing wasted
Irvin came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 12-3 loss to the Phillies, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven. The rookie right-hander delivered his best performance yet in the majors and left the mound in line for his fourth win, but the Nationals' bullpen completely fell apart over the final three frames. Irvin generated 33 called or swinging strikes among his 94 pitches as he produced his second straight quality start and sixth of the year, and he'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Miami.... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Claims quality start
Irvin did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings in a 3-2 win over the Athletics. He struck out six. Though the Nationals are planning on monitoring Irvin's workload for the remainder of the season, he threw 99 pitches across 6.2 frames Saturday. He surrendered only a pair of runs, but both came on long balls, as JJ Bleday and Brent Rooker each tagged Irvin for solo homers. Irvin has now allowed a home run in eight of his last nine starts and has served up multiple long balls in four of his last five outings. Despite his power troubles, Irvin owns a palatable 4.76 ERA across 90.2 innings with a 74:36 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Phillies for his next start.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Yields two runs in no-decision
Irvin allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in Monday's win over Milwaukee. He struck out two and dd not factor in the decision. Irvin gave up one run through five innings before putting three straight Brewers on base in the sixth, ending his outing. He was tagged with 11 runs in just 15.2 innings over his previous three outings before Monday's decent performance. Irvin registered a 5.06 ERA across six July starts, raising his season ERA to 4.86 through 79.2 frames. His next outing is currently lined up for this weekend in Cincinnati.... See More ... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Fans nine in victory
Irvin (3-5) allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk over 6.2 innings Friday in a win over the Giants. He struck out nine. The nine strikeouts were a career high for the 26-year-old right-hander, who hadn't missed many bats across his first 13 major-league starts. Irvin gave up a solo homer to J.D. Davis in the top of the first inning and a two-run shot to Joc Pederson in the top of the third, but he otherwise looked sharp. He lines up to face the Rockies at Nationals Park next time out.... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Goes three frames against St. Louis
Irvin did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over three innings against the Cardinals. He struck out three. Irvin struggled to get through the Cardinals' lineup, getting pulled after tossing 79 pitches in three innings of work. All of the damage came in the second frame, during which Irvin allowed a solo home run to Alec Burleson and a triple to Brendan Donovan. Though Irvin owns a 4.96 ERA on the year, Saturday's start marked his first outing allowing more than three earned runs since May 30. However, he's pitched six innings only twice in that stretch.... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Struggles versus Diamondbacks
Irvin did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over four innings against Arizona. He struck out one. After bursting onto the scene with one run allowed across his first two starts (10.2 innings), Irvin has slowed considerably, piling up three losses with an 8.85 ERA and a 15:13 K:BB over 20.1 innings (five starts) since. Though he has matched up against some powerful offenses in the Mets, Padres and Dodgers over that five-start stretch, Irvin hasn't shown much to give fantasy managers hope for a turnaround. He is lined up for another tough start on the road against Atlanta this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Falters against Dodgers
Irvin (1-3) took the loss Tuesday versus the Dodgers, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings. Irvin contained his struggles to the second and third innings, but the damage was too much for the Nationals to overcome. He's lost three of his last four outings, and this was just the second time in six starts Irvin's been able to finish five frames. He's at a 5.67 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 22:17 K:BB through 27 innings. With a 5.7 BB/9 and four home runs surrendered in his last three appearances, there's not much to like with the right-hander. He's projected for a home start versus the Diamondbacks in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Earns win in scoreless outing
Irvin (1-0) earned the win Monday, allowing four hits and three walks over 6.1 scoreless innings in a 5-1 win over the Giants. He struck out five. Irvin has now allowed just one run over 10.2 innings, getting his big-league career off to an impressive start after working his way up the ranks in Washington's farm system for three-plus seasons. However, this is a very small sample size, and fantasy managers would be best served tempering expectations until he proves capable of sustaining that caliber of performance over an extended period.... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Gives up one run in MLB debut
Irvin did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and four walks across 4.1 innings during a 2-1 win over the Cubs. He struck out three. Irvin was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday and replaced Chad Kuhl (foot) in the Nationals' starting rotation. The rookie struggled to find his command early, plunking Nico Hoerner and walking Ian Happ before surrendering a two-out, RBI single to Seiya Suzuki in the first inning. However, that was the only blemish on the night for Irving, who was replaced in the fifth with one out and runners on first and second. The four walks were a bit concerning for the 26-year-old, who posted a 1.54 WHIP over 22.1 innings at Triple-A, but he likely did enough in his MLB debut to earn at least one more start while Kuhl is on the 15-day injured list.... Nationals' Jake Irvin: Starting Wednesday against Cubs
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Irvin will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to make the start against the Cubs on Wednesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Irvin will be making his MLB debut Wednesday. The 26-year-old has made five starts (22.1 innings) for Rochester while posting a 5.64 ERA and 20:11 K:BB. The Nationals have already sent down Cory Abbott to make room for Irvin on the roster. Whether Irvin makes multiple starts for Washington will be determined in part by how he pitches against the Cubs.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Jake Irvin: Sent down to Triple-A
Washington optioned Irvin to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Irvin will head to Triple-A after splitting last season between High- and Double-A. He was added to the 40-man roster over the offseason and could push for a debut at some point in 2023.... See More ... See Less
