  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Shelved with forearm strain

The Astros placed Dubin on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right forearm strain, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Dubin didn't pitch in any Grapefruit League games this spring while recovering from what prior reports had described as shoulder inflammation, but the Astros are now labeling his injury as a forearm strain. The right-hander was able to face hitters earlier this week, so he could soon be ready to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Faces hitters Monday

Manager Joe Espada said that Dubin (shoulder) threw a live batting practice session Monday at the Astros' spring training facility, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Facing hitters in a live BP setting marks a meaningful step forward in the recovery process for Dubin, who didn't make any appearances during the Grapefruit League after experiencing shoulder inflammation early in camp. As a reliever, Dubin likely won't require a lengthy ramp-up period, but he appears on track to begin the season on the 15-day injured list unless the Astros elect to option him to Triple-A Sugar Land.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Plays catch Thursday

Dubin (shoulder) resumed playing catch Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Dubin has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut while he recovers from right shoulder inflammation, but resuming a throwing program this week is the first step toward getting back on the mound in a game setting. The right-hander will likely increase his throwing distance off flat ground over the next several days before advancing to bullpen sessions and then facing hitters in live batting practice. Even if he remains free of setbacks as he builds back up, Dubin is still probably a week or more away from his spring debut.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Not cleared to throw yet

Dubin (shoulder) has not yet been cleared to resume a throwing program, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

The Astros initially said Dubin would be shut down for three days due to right shoulder inflammation, but he's past that mark and isn't ready to throw just yet. He probably still has time to get ready for Opening Day but will need to progress in a hurry.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Nursing shoulder inflammation

Dubin will be shut down from throwing for three days because of right shoulder inflammation, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Some early spring shoulder inflammation isn't uncommon, but it won't help his bid for a bullpen spot. Dubin allowed seven runs over nine innings while striking out 11 during his brief time with the Astros last season.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Makes return from IL

Dubin (undisclosed) has struck out seven while allowing two earned runs on two hits and three walks over 4.1 innings across two appearances since being reinstated from Triple-A Sugar Land's 7-day injured list Aug. 17.

Dubin had been sidelined for about three weeks with the unspecified injury. The 27-year-old right-hander made three appearances for Houston earlier this season but has otherwise spent the 2023 campaign at Sugar Land, pitching to a 6.64 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over 42 innings.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Moves to Triple-A injured list

Triple-A Sugar Land placed Dubin on its 7-day injured list Friday with an unspecified injury.

After a brief stint in Houston, Dubin returned to Triple-A on July 3 and compiled a 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 11.2 innings over four appearances with Sugar Land before landing on the IL. The severity of Dubin's injury isn't known, but it'll take him out of the mix for a potential promotion for the foreseeable future.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Bound for Triple-A

The Astros optioned Dubin to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

After working in relief in his first two big-league appearances, Dubin entered the rotation Sunday and took a no-decision while limiting a tough Texas offense to one run on three hits and two walks. Though Dubin acquitted himself well Sunday, the Astros opted to swap him off the 26-man active roster for right-hander Brandon Bielak, who was called up from Sugar Land in a corresponding move. If he isn't needed in relief over the next couple of days, Bielak will likely step in the rotation when the Astros next require a fifth starter Friday versus the Mariners.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Goes four innings in spot start

Dubin allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings, taking a no-decision in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Dubin worked up to 68 pitches (39 strikes) in his first big-league start, and he did an effective job of quieting a strong offense. The run on his line came on an Adolis Garcia sacrifice fly in the first inning. It's unclear if Dubin will stick in the Astros' rotation beyond Sunday -- Framber Valdez (ankle) is questionable to pitch again before the All-Star break. If Dubin starts again, it'll likely be during a four-game home series versus the Mariners.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Set for Sunday's start

Dubin will start Sunday's game against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Dubin made his big-league debut June 18 and has pitched twice in relief. He's worked multiple innings on both occasions, though he may not pitch long enough to be eligible for a win. Dubin's effectiveness will also be a question, as he has allowed six earned runs across five major-league innings.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Recalled from Triple-A

The Astros recalled Dubin from Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Dubin will take the place of Brandon Bielak after Bielak was optioned to Triple-A in the corresponding move. In nine appearances for Sugar Land in 2023, Dubin has registered an unhealthy 7.96 ERA with a 1.69 WHIP over 26 appearances. He'll likely be a multi-inning reliever for low-leverage situations while with the Astros.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Pitching again at Triple-A

Dubin (elbow) has surrendered 10 earned runs on 14 hits and three walks while striking out seven across 7.1 innings in three appearances for Triple-A Sugar Land since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list May 31.

Dubin was on the shelf for about a month with a right elbow strain, but he appears to be getting stretched back out again now that he's healthy again. Over his 26 innings with Sugar Land this season, the 27-year-old right-hander has pitched to a 7.96 ERA and 1.69 WHIP.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Out with elbow strain

Dubin has been placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Sugar Land with a right elbow strain, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

The 27-year-old righty could have been an option for spot starts in the big-league rotation amid recent injuries to Luis Garcia and Jose Urquidy if he'd been pitching well and was healthy. However, Dubin had a 6.27 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 18.2 innings prior to the injury. He should be considered out indefinitely.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Moves to minor-league camp

Houston optioned Dubin to its minor-league camp Sunday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Dubin has been with the big-league club to start spring training but will now shift over to the minor-league side. The right-hander posted a 4.78 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 80:32 K:BB over 58.1 innings at Triple-A Sugar Land last season, and he'll likely need improved results in 2023 if he's going to make his MLB debut.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Comes off IL

Triple-A Sugar Land activated Dubin (forearm) from its 7-day injured list Monday.

Dubin has yet to appear for Sugar Land since being activated, but he's ostensibly healthy again after he was on the shelf since late June with a right forearm strain. Prior to being reinstated, Dubin struck out two over a pair of scoreless innings during his two-start rehab assignment in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Managing forearm injury

The Astros announced Thursday that Dubin is dealing with a right forearm strain, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Dubin has been on the 7-day minor-league injured list since the start of the regular season, but he's made 13 appearances (seven starts) at Triple-A Sugar Land. He's posted a 6.00 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 36 innings, but he hasn't pitched since June 21, and it's not yet clear when he'll make his next appearance.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Demoted to minor-league camp

The Astros optioned Dubin to their minor-league camp Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Dubin is expected to return to Triple-A Sugar Land to begin the 2022 campaign after he turned in a 3.44 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69:19 K:BB in 49.2 innings with the affiliate a season ago. After being added to the 40-man roster over the offseason, Dubin should be on the shortlist for a call-up to the big club if the Astros have a need for a spot starter or multi-inning reliever.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Joins 40-man roster

Dubin had his contract selected by the Astros on Friday.

Dubin will join the 40-man roster as Houston has opted to shield him from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. The 26-year-old had a 3.44 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69:19 K:BB over 49.2 innings at Triple-A last season and is a strong candidate to make his MLB debut in 2022.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Lands on injured list

Dubin was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday for an undisclosed reason, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

After a solid season in 2019, Dubin was added to the Astros' 60-man roster for developmental purposes. However, he'll now be sidelined for an undisclosed reason. The 24-year-old posted a 3.58 ERA and a 151:46 K:BB over 110.2 innings in the minors last year.

  • Astros' Shawn Dubin: Added to player pool

Dubin was added to the Astros' 60-man player pool Sunday.

Dubin, who is not on the 40-man roster, is a rail-thin starting pitcher that achieved a noteworthy level of success at High-A Fayetteville in 2019. Not much was expected of the 402nd overall pick (13th round) in the 2018 draft out of tiny Georgetown College (Kentucky), but Dubin put himself on the radar last season. The right-hander posted a 3.92 ERA (2.34 FIP) while striking out 132 and walking 42 over 98.2 innings, including 18 starts, for the Woodpeckers. He likely would have started the season at Double-A Corpus Christi, so the Astros are expected stash him in the alternate camp, where the 6-foot-1, 154-pounder can continue his development.
