Woods Richardson (1-0) pitched six innings in a win over the Tigers on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five.
Woods Richardson cruised to his first win Saturday, going 1-2-3 through the Tigers' lineup in five of the six innings in which he appeared. The only slip-up came in the second, when he allowed a leadoff single and a walk to open the frame, which eventually led to a run coming home for Detroit on a sacrifice fly. It was a very impressive performance in the right-hander's first start of the season, and he certainly made a case to stick around in the big leagues.

As expected, Woods Richardson's stay with the Twins was only a temporary one, as he was summoned from St. Paul to serve as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader with the Tigers. He started the second game of the twin bill, earning the win while limiting Detroit to one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five over six innings. Woods Richardson should be the Twins' top choice the next time the big club is in need of a spot starter.

The right-hander was rocked for seven runs over 3.1 innings in his last start at St. Paul. Woods Richardson has worked on adjusting his arm angle this spring from a strictly 12 o'clock release to down a few slots, MLB.com reports. Woods Richardson threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout in his spring debut Monday against the Yankees.
Woods Richardson took a step backward last season at Triple-A with a 4.91 ERA and 7.6 K/9 along with an increased walk rate to 4.8 BB/9. He also struggled in his one outing in the majors, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings. He's never had great velocity, so it was encouraging to see his fastball sit in the 92-94 mph range, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. While he'll likely need to prove himself at Triple-A before getting another extended shot in the majors, he could be counted on this summer if Minnesota's rotation depth is tested.

After starter Kenta Maeda lasted just two innings in Friday's 3-2 loss to Washington in the series opener while battling an ankle injury, the Twins summoned Woods Richardson from Triple-A on Saturday to give a fresh arm to an overtaxed bullpen. The 22-year-old right-hander ended up serving as an innings eater in relief in the Twins' 10-4 loss Saturday, covering 4.2 frames and striking out five but giving up five earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Woods Richardson will head back to St. Paul a day later with the Twins needing to open up a roster spot for Sunday's starter, Bailey Ober, who was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Richardson had a 5.76 ERA with a troubling 5.2 BB/9 at Double-A New Hampshire before his trade to Minnesota from Toronto last season. Though he was finally cleared to pitch for Wichita over the weekend, Woods Richardson showed spotty control in the start, tossing only 19 of his 40 pitches for strikes. Consistently finding the strike zone had proved to be an issue for Woods Richardson prior to the trade; he submitted a bloated 12.9 percent walk rate in his 11 starts with the Blue Jays' Double-A affiliate in New Hampshire.

The 20-year-old looks like he may have to wait a while longer to do so, as the Twins may want to work with him to refine his mechanics after a string of poor outings at Double-A New Hampshire prior to being traded. Over his final five starts with the affiliate, Woods Richardson posted a 10.18 ERA, 2.02 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB in 20.1 innings.

Woods Richardson is part of the trade package going from the Blue Jays to the Twins in exchange for Jose Berrios, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Woods Richardson was Toronto's top pitching prospect following the graduation of Alek Manoah, though he's struggled at Double-A this season with a 5.76 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 67:26 K:BB across 45.1 innings (11 starts). The right-hander is still only 20 years old and has shown swing-and-miss stuff with a 33.2 percent strikeout rate, but his command has been inconsistent with a 12.9 percent walk rate. Still, it's a strong return for the Twins, who will also receive shortstop/outfielder Austin Martin in the deal for Berrios, per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca. Woods Richardson is currently playing with the U.S. Olympic team in Tokyo, so he won't be joining his new organization immediately.
