Player Outlook
Due to injuries and the pandemic, Owen White's had a slow path through the Rangers' system, but he appeared to be working toward a potential rotation spot in 2024 after a successful 2022 season. That trajectory continued over the first half of 2023 at Double-A Frisco - which included a stint in the All-Star Futures Game. Following a brief stay in the majors when Texas was in a mid-summer bullpen bind, White was returned to the minors and elevated to Triple-A Round Rock. That's where the wheels started to wobble. The strike-throwing right-hander experienced an increased walk rate and drop in strikeouts while pitching to a 4.99 ERA in 52.1 innings for the Express. A sparkling K:BB ratio of 4.52:1 in 2022 dropped to 1.45:1 in 2023 (1:1 in Triple-A). Adjusting to the sport's most advanced minor-league level is nothing new, so it shouldn't diminish White's prospect status until he has a second go with Round Rock.

  • Rangers' Owen White: Injury similar to last year

White (neck) said Thursday that the injury he's dealing with is similar to the one which cost him most of the second half last season at Double-A Frisco, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The injury he dealt with last year was described as forearm fatigue at the time. More specifically, though, White has nerve inflammation in his neck which causes pain to radiate down his arm. It sounds like he and the Rangers are trying to find a clearer diagnosis before they determine the best course of treatment. In the meantime, White will be shut down from throwing. The 23-year-old right-hander was a 2018 draft pick but has been limited to just 115 innings in pro ball due to injuries.

  • Rangers' Owen White: Sidelined with neck tightness

Rangers general manager Chris Young said Wednesday that White is dealing with tightness in the right side of his neck and will be held out of action for the next couple of days, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. White is one of the top prospects in the Texas system, and the Rangers won't take any unnecessary risks with the 23-year-old right-hander while he's less than 100 percent healthy. After posting a 104:23 K:BB and 3.59 ERA in his 80.1 innings between High-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco in 2022, White is projected to open the upcoming season with Triple-A Round Rock. He could make starts with the Rangers by the time 2023 comes to a close.

Although the right-hander was unavailable for the final few months of the minor-league regular season, he should be able to have a normal offseason program once the playoffs wrap up.

  • Rangers' Owen White: Makes Cactus League debut

White allowed one hit and struck out one over two scoreless innings in Saturday's spring training game against Cleveland. White, a highly regarded prospect drafted in the second round of the 2018 draft, made his Cactus League debut for the Rangers. He set down the side on eight pitches in his first inning, including a three-pitch strikeout, then worked around a single in his second frame. Tommy John elbow surgery and the canceled 2020 minor-league season set back White's development. He's expected to open the season at High-A Hickory and could move up a level at some point.

  • Rangers' Owen White: Out with fractured hand

White will be sidelined until at least mid-June due to a fractured bone in his hand, Adam J. Morris of LoneStarBall.com reports. Low-A Down East placed White on the 7-day injured list Saturday. The injury is yet another unfortunate setback for White, whom the Rangers selected out of high school with the No. 55 overall pick in the 2018 first-year player draft. After the Rangers chose to delay his professional debut in 2018, White's 2019 campaign was wiped out by Tommy John surgery, while the COVID-19 pandemic prevented him from pitching in 2020. The 21-year-old finally got the chance to debut last week with Down East, only to pick up a new injury that will keep him on the shelf for at least a month.
