Matt Mervis was pretty unlucky in his first big-league cup of coffee, but first basemen and designated hitters don't usually get many chances in their mid-20s to prove they belong in a big-league lineup. He had a .218 BABIP, .167 average and .234 xBA while showcasing an impressive 111.8 mph maxEV, 13.8 Barrel% and 50.0 HardHit% in 58 events over 99 plate appearances. His 32.3 percent strikeout rate was by far the highest mark of his pro career, but his 30.7 O-Swing% and 75.0 Z-Swing% were strong swing-decision marks for a rookie. Mervis, who turns 26 in April, was excellent for the second year in a row at Triple-A, but his exploits at that level are irrelevant at this point. He is either a Quad-A hitter or a big leaguer, and we won't know for sure until he gets an extended look. Just because Mervis looks like he's atop the depth chart in December doesn't mean that won't change as the offseason progresses, so make sure you don't go into the season relying on him.

  • Cubs' Matt Mervis: Expected to be called up

    The Cubs are expected to recall Mervis from Triple-A Iowa prior to Tuesday's game against the Astros, Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register reports. Hayden Wesneski is also headed back to the majors, per Birch. There's no word yet on what the corresponding moves will be, but Wesneski would have to replace an injured player since he hasn't been down 10 days yet. That could point to an injured list stint for Ian Happ (hamstring). Mervis is slashing .288/.402/.606 with five home runs and a 19:12 K:BB over his first 82 plate appearances with Iowa this season. He could see some action in the designated hitter spot for the Cubs.

Mervis has been locked in to start the season and looks like a player ready to return to the majors. The 25-year-old made his MLB debut last season but struggled, recording a .167/.242/.289 slash line across 27 games, to go along with a 32.3 percent strikeout rate. Mervis is limited to first base and designated hitter, and there's not much he can do at Triple-A to improve his dynasty stock, given that he's 26 years old and this is his third year at that level.

Nonetheless, his 21.3 percent walk rate is pretty eye opening -- he had a 10.4 percent walk rate in 240 plate appearances for Iowa last year. Trey Mancini (-0.7 fWAR), Eric Hosmer (-0.1 fWAR) and Edwin Rios (-0.2 fWAR) have all been below replacement-level players so far this season, so Mervis could get a look sooner than later.

    Mervis will "almost certainly" begin the 2023 season at Triple-A Iowa following the Cubs' offseason signings of Eric Hosmer and Trey Mancini, Sahadev Sharma and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report. Though Hosmer and Mancini will be due less than $8 million combined in 2023, the Cubs brought the two veterans aboard with the intention of having them see the bulk of the starts at first base and designated hitter, respectively, to begin the campaign. Because Mervis is a left-handed hitter like Hosmer and the righty-hitting Mancini has performed similarly against right- and left-handed pitching during his career, the Cubs wouldn't have a short-side platoon role available for the 24-year-old, who looks like he'll have to wait for an injury or for one of the two incumbents to struggle before he gets his first taste of the majors. While the offseason moves are disappointing development for Mervis investors who were expecting the power-hitting first baseman to claim an Opening Day role on the heels of a breakout season at the upper levels of the minors and a productive run in the Arizona Fall League, his status as an older prospect along with the Cubs' relatively minimal investment in Hosmer and Mancini still bodes well for his chances at getting an extended run in the big leagues at some point in 2023.
