Marlins' Jumbo Diaz: Receives spring invite from Marlins
Diaz signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Friday which includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
The Rays designated Diaz for assignment in July after he struggled to a 5.70 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 31 appearances. Diaz was able to salvage something from 2017 after signing with the Astros, posting a 2.92 ERA and three saves in 12 appearances with Triple-A Fresno to close the year. He also had a couple serviceable seasons with the Reds, so it's not much of a stretch to think he could break camp in the Miami bullpen.

Astros' Jumbo Diaz: Lands minors deal with Houston
Diaz signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Monday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Diaz became a free agent July 21 after being designated for assignment by the Rays, and his MLB experience apparently created some intrigue in the Houston front office. He'll report to Triple-A Fresno at first, although he could find his way to the majors to provide bullpen depth if his performance with the Grizzlies warrants it.

Jumbo Diaz: Elects free agency
Diaz has cleared waivers and elected free agency, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Diaz holds a 5.70 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 15 walks in 30 innings with the Rays this year, but he may soon find a club that needs mopup work. After all, the 33-year-old has useful seasons in 2014 and 2016 to his name.

Rays' Jumbo Diaz: DFA'd by Rays
Diaz was designated for assignment Sunday.
The 33-year-old has struggled through 30 appearances this season, amassing a 5.46 ERA across 29.2 innings of work. Sunday's move comes on the heels of Diaz throwing just eight pitches earlier in the day against the Angels. He entered in the eighth inning and gave up a hit, putting a runner on that would subsequently score on a two-run homer by C.J. Cron off of Adam Kolarek, who relieved Diaz midway through the eighth. In a corresponding move, the Rays selected the contract of right-hander Andrew Kittredge from Triple-A Durham.

Rays' Jumbo Diaz: Touched up for four runs Saturday
Diaz gave up four earned runs on five hits over two innings in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Orioles. He struck out two.
Diaz surrendered a two-run shot to Trey Mancini and let in two additional runs, snapping a four-appearance scoreless streak. That stretch had equaled his longest of the season without allowing a run, as the veteran reliever continues to primarily pitch to contact. Factoring in Saturday's outing, he's sporting an unsightly 5.61 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.

Rays' Jumbo Diaz: Second consecutive strong outing Thursday
Diaz fired 1.1 scoreless innings in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Tigers, allowing one hit and recording a strikeout.
The 33-year-old right-hander has looked good since coming off the disabled list with a forearm injury, posting two scoreless outings in which he's allowed two hits over 2.1 innings. Diaz (forearm) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Diaz checked out fine during his lone rehab outing with High-A Charlotte on Tuesday, which was enough to convince the Rays to bring him back on the active roster. After submitting a 5.49 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over 19.2 innings prior to the injury, Diaz should slot into middle relief for the Rays. The team optioned Ryne Stanek to Triple-A Durham to clear a spot for the right-hander.

Rays' Jumbo Diaz: Tosses scoreless rehab inning
Diaz (forearm) made his first rehab appearance with High-A Charlotte on Tuesday, allowing one hit and no runs over one inning.
The stint marked his first live game action since being placed on the DL with forearm fatigue and represents a positive step toward a return to the Rays' bullpen. Diaz may need a couple more minor-league appearances in order to build up his arm strength, though his 5.65 ERA through 21 games this season doesn't really make him a pivotal relief asset.

Diaz has been placed on the 10-day DL retroactive to Tuesday due to forearm fatigue, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Diaz has collected three holds in relief this season, but his last one came on May 1, and the right-hander has given up a run in two of his last three appearances. There had been no prior indication of any forearm troubles, so the ailment likely isn't serious, but the team needed a roster spot to call up fellow reliever Tommy Hunter (calf).

The burly reliever snapped an unfavorable three-appearance stretch of giving up at least one earned run, contributing his first scoreless effort since May 3. Diaz was charged with a pair of blown save opportunities and a loss over that stretch, while seeing his ERA balloon from 3.29 to 5.74. The 33-year-old right-hander figures to continue seeing a fair amount of work despite his inconsistencies given the fact that the Rays bullpen has been hit with some injuries.

Diaz was credited with his third hold in Monday's 4-2 win over the Marlins, giving up two hits and a walk over 1.2 scoreless innings.
The burly reliever provided manager Kevin Cash with a valuable multi-inning appearance, his third such stint over his last four appearances. Diaz bounced back from a bumpy showing against the Blue Jays last Friday, one in which he gave up an earned run on two hits in just one-third of an inning. His control does continue to be spotty, as the right-hander's K:BB now sits at 8:7 following Monday's effort.

Diaz struck out one and walked one over two scoreless innings in a 6-3 loss to the Astros on Friday.
The veteran righty had an outing to forget against the Tigers on Wednesday, giving up two earned runs on one hit and three walks while failing to record an out, so Friday's effort was a bright spot despite the loss. Diaz was deployed for multiple innings for only the second time this season, but he's been the recipient of plenty of work, already logging 10 appearances on the season. All but two have been scoreless outings, as he's served as a pleasant surprise out of the bullpen after arriving as a mid-spring waiver claim following his Reds release.

Rays' Jumbo Diaz: Dominant one-inning outing Tuesday
Diaz pitched a scoreless eighth inning in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Tigers and recorded a strikeout.
The veteran righty now has three straight scoreless outings and has accomplished the feat in seven of his eight trips to the mound overall. Diaz needed only 15 pitches, 10 of which he threw for strikes, to dispose of Jose Iglesias, Ian Kinsler and Nick Castellanos. The veteran reliever came a long way from being a mid-camp waiver claim to a piece of the Rays' Opening Day bullpen. Although Diaz did not have a particularly sharp spring, allowing 15 hits and three earned runs over 8.0 innings with the Rays, he does have some life on his fastball, which generally sits in the mid-90s. He figures to slot into a middle-relief role until some of the Rays's injured bullpen arms return to action.

Rays' Jumbo Diaz: Claimed by Rays
Diaz was claimed off waivers by the Rays on Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander was released by the Reds earlier this week after allowing eight runs and seven hits in three spring training games this season. Diaz was been a steady presence in the Cincinnati bullpen over the last three seasons and compiled a 3.14 ERA in 43 innings last season while serving mainly as a middle reliever. He will likely take on a similar role with Tampa Bay, who transferred right-hander Nathan Eovaldi to the 60-day DL in a corresponding move. Diaz is currently pitching for the Dominican Republic in the WBC, but should report to Rays' camp after the tournament concludes.

Reds' Jumbo Diaz: Gives up game-winning homer Saturday
Diaz gave up a walkoff homer to the Padres' Adam Rosales on Saturday night.
This was just the second time Diaz has allowed a run since his June 27 recall from Triple-A Louisville. Alas, both of those runs came on solo homers, and he's now allowed seven homers on the season. His strikeout rate has dropped precipitously this season as well - he has 11 strikeouts over 19 innings, after striking out 70 in 60.1 innings last year.
