  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Reassigned to minor-league camp

Hill (lat) was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Tigers on Friday. Hill has been dealing with a lat strain since mid-February, which has interrupted his spring training routine. The righty will now look to get healthy in the minors before potentially returning to Detroit as a bullpen option at some point. Hill made 26 appearances for the Tigers over the last two seasons, including eight starts, and has a career 5.09 ERA.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Nursing lat strain

Hill was diagnosed Wednesday with a mild right lat strain, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Hill felt discomfort during a bullpen session last week and will be re-evaluated in 7-to-10 days. The right-hander is in camp as a non-roster invitee, and the injury probably ruins any chance he had of cracking the Opening Day roster.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Re-signs with Tigers

The Tigers re-signed Hill to a minor-league contract Sunday. Hill was non-tendered by Detroit earlier this month but will remain in the organization. It's not clear whether he was given an invitation to the major-league side of spring training as part of the deal. Hill was torched for 20 runs (16 earned) over 15.2 major-league innings in 2023.

  • Garrett Hill: Becomes free agent

Hill became a free agent Friday after being non-tendered by Detroit. Hill, 27, was lit up for 20 runs -- 16 earned -- over 15.2 major-league innings in 2023 and also struggled to a 6.02 ERA in 46.1 innings with Triple-A Toledo. He'll likely have to accept a minor-league deal in free agency.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Recalled by Tigers

Hill was called up by Detroit on Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Hill will give the Tigers an extra arm in the bullpen after the unit was tasked with tossing 6.2 frames Friday. Joey Wentz, the ineffective starter in Friday's contest, was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Rejoins big club

Hill was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Hill has a 9.88 ERA over 13.2 big-league frames this season but has been in the minors since early July. The 27-year-old also hasn't been particularly effective at Triple-A this year with a 4.54 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 53:25 K:BB over 37.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Optioned to Toledo

The Tigers optioned Hill to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Hill will return to the minors to make room for Eduardo Rodriguez (finger), who will return from the injured list and start Wednesday. Hill made one appearance after getting called up June 28, allowing four earned runs across two innings, and he holds a 9.88 ERA and 2.20 WHIP through 13.2 frames.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Recalled from Toledo

The Tigers recalled Hill from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. Since being optioned to Toledo on June 13, Hill has surrendered two runs across 5.1 innings while striking out seven batters. He'll now be called back into the Tigers' bullpen to replace Anthony Misiewicz, who was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Hill holds an 8.49 ERA and 1.97 WHIP through 11.2 frames in the majors.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Optioned to Triple-A

Hill was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Hill threw 2.2 innings in Monday's win over Atlanta, so he wasn't going to be available to pitch for a day or two. Brendan White is taking his spot in the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Optioned to Triple-A level

Hill was optioned Saturday to Triple-A Toledo. Hill earned a save and a hold during his time with the Tigers but ultimately surrendered 10 runs -- eight earned -- across seven innings over five relief outings. That works out to a 10.29 ERA.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Secures first save

Hill tossed one inning Monday, giving up one unearned run and earning a save over the Astros. Hill entered a 7-5 game in the 11th inning and finished things off after allowing only the automatic runner to score. He coughed up two runs in his first appearance this season. Alex Lange blew a save chance but should still have a grip on the closer role in Detroit.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Still battling for role

Hill is likely battling for one of three remaining bullpen spots in Detroit along with Tyler Holton, Chasen Shreve, Trey Wingenter and Beau Brieske, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Holton and Shreve are both lefties, so the Tigers will likely want to keep one or both of them as situational options. Hill may still make the team as a long reliever, as he made eight starts last season as a rookie. The righty held his own with a 4.03 ERA, though he only had 40 strikeouts across 60.1 innings, so he seems unlikely to dominate batters out of the bullpen.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Set for bullpen role?

Hill could be in line to start the year in Detroit's bullpen, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Hill made eight starts and nine relief appearances for the Tigers as a rookie last year, compiling a 4.03 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 60.1 total innings. Detroit's rotation may be full with Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull back in the mix and Michael Lorenzen joining the team, but Hill pitched well enough to earn a look in relief, and starting isn't out of the question at some point.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Pitches well in relief Friday

Hill pitched three scoreless innings of relief in Friday's loss to the Rangers. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four. Detroit starter Tyler Alexander allowed seven runs across three innings, but Hill came in and pitched much better. The righty recently shifted to the bullpen with Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) rejoining the rotation, though the likes of Alexander and Drew Hutchison aren't the most well-established starters toward the back of the staff. That leaves open the possibility of Hill picking up more starts at some point, though Bryan Garcia could also get recalled from Triple-A Toledo if the Tigers need another starter. As a starter this season, Hill has logged a 4.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 42.2 innings (eight starts).

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Moving to bullpen

Hill is moving to the Tigers bullpen, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. All eight of his MLB appearances have come as a starter, with Hill logging a 4.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 21 strikeouts and 18 walks in 42.2 innings. Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) is joining the rotation Sunday and the Tigers can work with a four-man rotation through the end of the month. Daniel Norris is also moving to the bullpen and Bryan Garcia is a candidate to take the ball the next time the Tigers need a fifth starter.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Remains in rotation

Hill is scheduled to make his next start Sunday in Toronto, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Hill was returned to Triple-A Toledo after he served as the Tigers' 27th man and starting pitcher in the second game of their doubleheader last Thursday with the Athletics, but Detroit brought him back from the minors this week after fellow starter Rony Garcia (biceps) was moved to the injured list in a corresponding move. The rookie was shaky in a no-decision Tuesday against the Padres, working five innings while allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. In spite of his unremarkable results through his first four big-league starts -- he sports a 5.57 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 21 innings -- Hill looks like he'll keep holding down a rotation spot while Detroit's starting pitching depth continues to be thinned by injuries.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Walks four in return

Hill allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two in five innings of a 6-4 extra-inning loss against San Diego. He did not factor into the decision. All the damage against Hill came with two outs in the second inning. After retiring the first two batters, the next five Padres reached safely and three came around to score. The rookie was recalled before the game, replacing Rony Garcia (biceps) in the rotation. Hill has been a strikeout machine in the minors, fanning 10.9 batters per nine innings, but has yet to miss many bats in the majors, striking out just 10 batters in 21 innings across four starts. Should he receive another start with Detroit, it would likely be over the weekend in Toronto.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Officially called up

Hill was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Hill was optioned to Toledo on Thursday but will rejoin the Tigers' rotation as the starter for Tuesday's game against the Padres after Rony Garcia (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday. Hill has made three starts for the Tigers this year, posting a 5.63 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 16 innings.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Rejoining rotation

Hill will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Tuesday's game against the Padres, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The Tigers may wait until Tuesday to make the transaction official, but the rookie will be rejoining the rotation as a replacement for Rony Garcia (biceps), who will be placed on the 15-day injured list within the next two days. Hill has previously made three starts for the Tigers, with his most recent outing coming in a doubleheader against the White Sox last week when Detroit kicked off its second-half schedule. Over 16 big-league innings, Hill has recorded a 5.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 8:5 K:BB.

  • Tigers' Garrett Hill: Suffers second loss

Hill (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits across five innings to take the loss in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Athletics. He walked two and struck out four. Hill cruised through five scoreless innings, but he ran into trouble in the sixth by allowing two singles and a three-run home run by Sean Murphy before getting the hook. This was Hill's third start of the year, and outside of allowing six runs his last time out, he's allowed just four runs over his other 11 innings of action, leaving the righty with a 5.63 ERA overall. Hill was the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader and could return to the minors soon, though with Detroit's rotation thinned by injuries, he figures to see more MLB starts this year.
