Tigers' Garrett Hill: Re-signs with Tigers
The Tigers re-signed Hill to a minor-league contract Sunday.
Hill was non-tendered by Detroit earlier this month but will remain in the organization. It's not clear whether he was given an invitation to the major-league side of spring training as part of the deal. Hill was torched for 20 runs (16 earned) over 15.2 major-league innings in 2023.... Hill, 27, was lit up for 20 runs -- 16 earned -- over 15.2 major-league innings in 2023 and also struggled to a 6.02 ERA in 46.1 innings with Triple-A Toledo. He'll likely have to accept a minor-league deal in free agency.... See More ... See Less

The 27-year-old right-hander heads back to the farm to clear out a 26-man roster spot for Joey Wentz, who is expected to serve as the Tigers' bulk pitcher Wednesday versus the Yankees. Hill has been lit up for 20 runs -- 16 earned -- in 15.2 big-league innings this season.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Rejoins big club
Hill was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Hill has a 9.88 ERA over 13.2 big-league frames this season but has been in the minors since early July. The 27-year-old also hasn't been particularly effective at Triple-A this year with a 4.54 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 53:25 K:BB over 37.2 innings.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Optioned to Toledo
The Tigers optioned Hill to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
Hill will return to the minors to make room for Eduardo Rodriguez (finger), who will return from the injured list and start Wednesday. Hill made one appearance after getting called up June 28, allowing four earned runs across two innings, and he holds a 9.88 ERA and 2.20 WHIP through 13.2 frames.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Recalled from Toledo
The Tigers recalled Hill from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.
Since being optioned to Toledo on June 13, Hill has surrendered two runs across 5.1 innings while striking out seven batters. He'll now be called back into the Tigers' bullpen to replace Anthony Misiewicz, who was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Hill holds an 8.49 ERA and 1.97 WHIP through 11.2 frames in the majors.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Optioned to Triple-A
Hill was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Hill threw 2.2 innings in Monday's win over Atlanta, so he wasn't going to be available to pitch for a day or two. Brendan White is taking his spot in the bullpen.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Recalled from Toledo
Detroit recalled Hill from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Hill will join the active roster as a replacement for Alex Faedo, who was placed on the injured list Saturday with right middle finger discomfort. Hill struggled mightily in his limited time with Detroit back in April with a 10.27 ERA over seven innings, and his results haven't been overly impressive across his 15 outings at Triple-A (4.78 ERA, 1.69 WHIP in 26.1 innings). Though he's largely served in a relief role at Toledo, Hill built up to three innings in his most recent outing Thursday, so he could be able to provide the Tigers with a decent amount of length as a starter or primary pitcher out of the bullpen when Faedo's next turn in the rotation comes up Tuesday in Philadelphia.... Tigers' Garrett Hill: Optioned to Triple-A level
Hill was optioned Saturday to Triple-A Toledo.
Hill earned a save and a hold during his time with the Tigers but ultimately surrendered 10 runs -- eight earned -- across seven innings over five relief outings. That works out to a 10.29 ERA.... See More ... See Less

Hill tossed one inning Monday, giving up one unearned run and earning a save over the Astros.
Hill entered a 7-5 game in the 11th inning and finished things off after allowing only the automatic runner to score. He coughed up two runs in his first appearance this season. Alex Lange blew a save chance but should still have a grip on the closer role in Detroit.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Part of Opening Day roster
Hill will be a part of Detroit's Opening Day roster, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Hill earned one of the final spots on the Detroit roster despite posting a 7.11 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 12.2 innings in the Grapefruit League. The Tigers have yet to clarify what the 27-year-old right-hander's role will look like to begin the season, but he could be ticketed for a long-relief role with Joey Wentz expected to serve as Detroit's No. 5 starter to begin the campaign.... Tigers' Garrett Hill: Still battling for role
Hill is likely battling for one of three remaining bullpen spots in Detroit along with Tyler Holton, Chasen Shreve, Trey Wingenter and Beau Brieske, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Holton and Shreve are both lefties, so the Tigers will likely want to keep one or both of them as situational options. Hill may still make the team as a long reliever, as he made eight starts last season as a rookie. The righty held his own with a 4.03 ERA, though he only had 40 strikeouts across 60.1 innings, so he seems unlikely to dominate batters out of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Looks good in spring debut
Hill tossed two scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one.
Hill drew the start and looked sharp while logging 34 pitches. The righty made eight starts for the Tigers in 2022, though he'll likely start this season in a long-relief role with Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull back in the mix and Michael Lorenzen joining the team. Hill could force his way into the rotation at some point if he pitches well, however.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Set for bullpen role?
Hill could be in line to start the year in Detroit's bullpen, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Hill made eight starts and nine relief appearances for the Tigers as a rookie last year, compiling a 4.03 ERA and 1.36 WHIP across 60.1 total innings. Detroit's rotation may be full with Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull back in the mix and Michael Lorenzen joining the team, but Hill pitched well enough to earn a look in relief, and starting isn't out of the question at some point.... Tigers' Garrett Hill: Pitches well in relief Friday
Hill pitched three scoreless innings of relief in Friday's loss to the Rangers. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four.
Detroit starter Tyler Alexander allowed seven runs across three innings, but Hill came in and pitched much better. The righty recently shifted to the bullpen with Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) rejoining the rotation, though the likes of Alexander and Drew Hutchison aren't the most well-established starters toward the back of the staff. That leaves open the possibility of Hill picking up more starts at some point, though Bryan Garcia could also get recalled from Triple-A Toledo if the Tigers need another starter. As a starter this season, Hill has logged a 4.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 42.2 innings (eight starts).... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Moving to bullpen
Hill is moving to the Tigers bullpen, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
All eight of his MLB appearances have come as a starter, with Hill logging a 4.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 21 strikeouts and 18 walks in 42.2 innings. Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) is joining the rotation Sunday and the Tigers can work with a four-man rotation through the end of the month. Daniel Norris is also moving to the bullpen and Bryan Garcia is a candidate to take the ball the next time the Tigers need a fifth starter.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Looks sharp in win
Hill (3-3) allowed one run on four hits across six innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Guardians. He walked two and struck out three.
Hill turned in his best effort since his MLB debut back on July 4, when he also allowed just one run across six innings. The righty hasn't been a big strikeout pitcher so far, with only 21 of them across 42.2 innings, so he'll have a smaller margin for error than most moving forward. However, Hill should stick in the rotation for the injury-riddled Tigers, who are missing all of Casey Mize, (elbow) Tarik Skubal (elbow), Beau Brieske (biceps), Michael Pineda (triceps) and Eduardo Rodriguez (personal), though Rodriguez could return soon. Hill is lined up to make his next start next week against the Giants.... See More ... See Less
Tigers' Garrett Hill: Survives against Guardians
Hill allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out one across five innings Thursday against the Guardians. He did not factor into the decision.
Hill wasn't particularly sharp, but the Tigers' defense made two separate errors behind him that led directly to runs. He's allowed three or fewer earned runs in five of his seven starts this season but has only a 17:14 K:BB across 31.2 frames. Hill's 4.66 ERA on the campaign is currently being held up by tenuous skills, and he may be out of a spot in the rotation once either Michael Pineda (triceps) or Eduardo Rodriguez (personal) --both are currently on rehab assignments -- is able to return....
