Player Outlook
There was quite a bit of hype around Oscar Colas when he signed with the White Sox as an international free agent in January of 2022 and he further fanned the flames in his first year of MLB-affiliated ball, slashing .314/.371/.524 in 526 plate appearances between High-A Winston-Salem, Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. He then lit it up in the Cactus League last spring to earn a spot on Chicago's major-league roster leading into the 2023 season. It was a storybook rise, but what came after was alarming. Colas posted the eighth-worst OPS (.571) of the 328 big-league hitters who logged more than 250 plate appearances and was twice demoted back to the minors. He batted .190/.238/.293 against lefties and racked up 71 total strikeouts to just 12 walks. The hype has waned, so much so that the 25-year-old outfielder will likely go undrafted in most standard leagues for 2024.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Optioned to Triple-A

The White Sox optioned Colas to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday. Colas was fighting for a roster spot during spring training but will shift to minor-league camp after he hit just .188 through 10 Cactus League games. The 25-year-old was the White Sox's starting right fielder to open 2023 but had a .571 OPS in 75 games, so he ended up spending much of the campaign at Triple-A.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Seeing action at first base

Colas played some at first base during Saturday's Cactus League loss to the Rangers, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Colas has played only right field and center field since being signed by the White Sox in January of 2022, but he has extensive experience at first base from his days playing in Japan. Andrew Vaughn has first base locked down with the big club, but Colas adding to his versatility gives him another avenue to at-bats. The 25-year-old is expected to begin 2024 back in the minors following a disappointing 2023, which saw him post just a .571 OPS over 75 games with the big club.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Likely to start year in minors

Colas is likely to begin the 2024 season with Triple-A Charlotte, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Colas earned the starting right field job for the White Sox to begin the 2023 season, though he posted just a 53 wRC+ across 263 plate appearances. He was also demoted to Charlotte from early May to early July, and once again in mid-September. If the 25-year-old returns to the minors to start 2024, Gavin Sheets and the newly signed Kevin Pillar would be the top options in right field, but Colas could still re-establish himself with a big spring.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Demoted to Triple-A again

The White Sox optioned Colas to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday. Colas has now been sent down to the minors for the second time this season, as he was also optioned back in early May following a slow start to the campaign. Colas slashed just .219/.253/.331 in 50 games after being recalled in early July and is hitting only .216/.257/.314 overall in his rookie campaign. Gavin Sheets and Trayce Thompson are likely to form a platoon in right field with Colas headed back to Triple-A.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Heads to bench

Colas will sit Saturday against the Tigers. The White Sox's 55-86 record means they have little reason not to give purported pieces of the future like Colas as many at-bats as they can handle down the stretch. The rookie right fielder made 11 consecutive starts prior to Saturday's off day, but his .175/.214/.350 slash line over that stretch has hardly been promising. Trayce Thompson will take a turn in right field in Colas' absence.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Blasts homer in win

Colas went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Royals. Colas has just five homers this year, two of which have come in his last seven games. In that span, he's gone 5-for-25 (.200) with six strikeouts and one walk. The 24-year-old outfielder is slashing a meager .218/.260/.315 with 19 RBI, 31 runs scored and four stolen bases over his first 73 major-league games.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Smacks fourth homer

Colas went 1-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored Wednesday against the Orioles. Colas has started 21 of 26 games for the White Sox in August, despite his performance being uneven. He did manage three homers and 15 runs scored in that span. On the other hand, he's carried a 27.4 percent strikeout rate and hit just .231. Given that the White Sox aren't playing for positioning in the standings. Colas should continue to get regular run in the final month of the season, and he could emerge as a potential source of power.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Out of lineup

Colas will be on the bench Saturday against the Athletics. Colas sits for the second time in three days, with the Athletics again turning to a left-hander in JP Sears. Trayce Thompson will get the start in right field.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Homers in return

Colas went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored Wednesday in a 9-2 win against the Yankees. Colas missed a couple game due to leg soreness, but he looked strong in his return Wednesday. The rookie outfielder added to Luis Severino's season-long struggles with a two-run shot off the veteran hurler in the second inning. The long ball gave Colas a modest five-game hitting streak, during which he is slashing .316/.350/.632 with two homers, three RBI and six runs scored.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Returns from sore leg

Colas (leg) is back in the lineup Wednesday versus the Yankees. Colas missed the first two games of the three-game set due to leg soreness, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com, but he's ready to rock for the White Sox in Wednesday night's series finale. The 24-year-old will start in right field and bat eighth.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Three-hit day Sunday

Colas went 3-for-5 with a run and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Twins. Colas notched the first three-hit game of his MLB career and stole his first bag since April 8. The 24-year-old is still trying to settle in at the major league level, as he's slashing .233/.227/.279 with two extra-base hits, two RBI, five runs and a 0:16 BB:K in 43 plate appearances since being recalled July 4. Colas has settled in as Chicago's everyday right fielder, but he could be at risk of losing some at-bats when third baseman Yoan Moncada (back) returns from the injured list during the upcoming week. Jake Burger has been one of the Chicago's top bats and could settle in at designated hitter once Moncada is in the fold, perhaps resulting in Eloy Jimenez poaching starts from Colas in right field.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Officially recalled from minors

Colas was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. The news was first reported Monday and has now been made official. Colas had been swinging a hot bat with Charlotte, putting up a 1.253 OPS with seven home runs over his last 10 contests. He batted only .211/.265/.276 in his first 25 games for the White Sox before being sent down back in late April, but the talented 24-year-old is worth another shot in deeper mixed leagues as he settles back in in right field for the Pale Hose.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: On fire at Triple-A

Colas is hitting .435 with four home runs and four strikeouts in his last six games for Triple-A Charlotte. Colas is hitting .297 with six home runs and a 21.2 percent strikeout rate in 44 games since getting optioned to Triple-A on May 2. Gavin Sheets and Clint Frazier have been platooning in right field for the White Sox, and both players have been below league average as hitters, so it would seem that Colas could be nearing a return to the big leagues.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: On bench again Tuesday

Colas is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. On the bench for the third time in four games, Colas looks to be at risk of losing his regular role in the outfield or possibly even facing a demotion to Triple-A Charlotte. After earning his way onto the Opening Day roster coming out of spring training, Colas has made little impact through his first 21 games in the big leagues. He enters Tuesday hitting just .219 with two extra-base hits (one home run, one double) and two stolen bases over 71 plate appearances.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Heads to bench

Colas will sit Saturday against the Rays. Colas hits the bench against lefty Shane McClanahan, meaning he's now sat against four of the five lefties the White Sox have faced this season. He isn't making much of a case to move from a platoon role to an everyday job, as he's hit just .233/.303/.300 through his first 19 MLB games.

  • White Sox's Oscar Colas: Ending skid

Colas went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored Friday against the Rays. Colas drove in a run with an infield single in the second frame and also came around to score. After a brief stretch of production to begin the season, he has gone only 9-for-46 across his last 15 games while striking out at a 25 percent clip in that span. However, he's shown recent signs of turning things around across his last two contests, as he's reached base three times in seven plate appearances. The White Sox appear willing to give Colas the chance to work through any struggles, as he's maintained consistent playing time despite posting a .233/.303/.300 slash line across 67 plate appearances on the campaign.

Colas is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins. After seeing his four-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4, two-strikeout performance in Tuesday's 4-3 loss, Colas will receive a breather for the series finale. Gavin Sheets will man right field in Colas' stead.

The rookie outfielder batted .362/.417/.533 against lefties in the minors last season.
