Player Outlook
The Cubs removed Jared Young from their 40-man roster last offseason, but he found his way back to the majors amidst a big year at Triple-A Iowa which saw him slash .310/.417/.577 with 21 home runs over 376 plate appearances. He cracked a couple more homers with the big club but was jettisoned from the 40-man roster again this winter and was scooped up on waivers by the rival Cardinals. Young can play the corner infield and outfield spots and has decent speed, although he's never been much of a base stealer. The 28-year-old took big steps forward with his power and walk rate in 2023, but given his age and the fact that he was in his third stint at Triple-A, it's fair to be dubious.

  • Cardinals' Jared Young: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Cardinals outrighted Young to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday after he cleared waivers, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. The Cardinals needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Victor Scott. Young will remain in the organization and should see semi-regular playing time in the corner infield and outfield spots at Memphis.

  • Cardinals' Jared Young: Optioned to Memphis

The Cardinals optioned Young to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday. Young has slashed .210/.290/.435 across 69 plate appearances in his MLB career, but a .353 OPS during spring training will send him back to the minors for the start of the season. Young found plenty of success with the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate last season, and a return to form at the plate could help him reach the majors again during his first season with the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals' Jared Young: Not doing enough to win roster spot

Young has gone 2-for-31 (.065) over 15 Grapefruit League games. Young provides organizational depth at the corner infield and corner outfield spots, but he's yet to get in a groove during spring training. The 28-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in November. Young's poor hitting in spring will likely mean he begins the year in the minors.

The Cubs outrighted Young to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Young posted a .310/.417/.577 batting line with 21 home runs over 90 games this season at the Triple-A level, but he couldn't quite replicate those numbers in the bigs with a .720 OPS in 16 contests. The 28-year-old is now off the 40-man roster in Chicago.

The 28-year-old was just demoted Wednesday but will quickly rejoin the big club with Nico Hoerner (knee) ending the season on the injured list. • Cubs' Jared Young: Homers in win Friday

Young went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's win over the Rockies. Making his first start for the Cubs since July, Young delivered a critical home run to help the team in its pursuit of a playoff spot. The 28-year-old has only appeared in 15 contests this year and has provided two long balls along with eight RBI. Young remains off the fantasy radar, though he may see another start or two down the stretch depending on matchups, as he does offer the lineup an additional left-handed bat.

Young will give the Cubs an extra option on the infield as Nick Madrigal heads to the 10-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain. Young, 28, has slashed just .171/.256/.371 across 39 major-league plate appearances this year.

  • Cubs' Jared Young: Sits versus lefty

  • Cubs' Jared Young: Remains on bench

Young will sit for the second straight game Saturday against the Yankees. Young immediately stepped into the large side of a platoon with Trey Mancini at first base after getting called up in late June, but his off day here comes against a righty in Gerrit Cole. Young has gone 1-for-17 at the plate in his last six games after going 4-for-9 with three extra-base hits in his first three appearances, so he could continue to cede time to Mancini going forward.

  • Cubs' Jared Young: Another start at first base

Young is starting at first base and batting eight Friday versus the Guardians. With Cody Bellinger back in center field, Young has now made two straight starts at first base and three straight overall. The 27-year-old has a home run and a triple in his first two contests with the big club in 2023 after posting a 1.030 OPS with 13 homers at Triple-A Iowa. The lefty-swinging Young could be the preferred option at first base versus righties for the time being, with Trey Mancini playing there against southpaws.

  • Cubs' Jared Young: Steals first MLB base

Young went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Marlins. Getting the start as the designated hitter and batting seventh in his fourth career appearance in the majors, Young swiped his first bag after stealing only three in 108 games at Triple-A Iowa this year. The 27-year-old doesn't have any kind of prospect pedigree after being a 15th-round pick in 2017, but it appears as though the rebuilding Cubs will give him consistent playing time against right-handed pitching over the final days of the season.
