Red Sox's Connor Wong: Homers late in win
Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Thursday in an 8-2 victory versus Cincinnati.
Wong essentially put the game away for the Red Sox in the eighth inning, swatting a two-run shot to left-center field. The blast extended his modest hitting streak to eight games, during which he is slashing .310/.333/.690 with two homers, five doubles and four RBI. Wong's strong hitting appears to have cemented his place ahead of Reese McGuire on the catcher depth chart -- since May 24, Wong has started five games to McGuire's two.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Homers in loss
Wong went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-6 loss to the Cardinals.
Wong hit the second of back-to-back blasts along with Enmanuel Valdez in the fifth inning of a back-and-forth game. It was the fourth home run in 81 at-bats for the catcher, who achieved double-digit homers in three of four full seasons in the minors. The season began with Wong as the backup to Reese McGuire, but the roles have since shifted. Wong's started 24 games compared to 15 for McGuire.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Powers win with two homers
Wong went 4-for-4 with a double and two solo home runs in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Blue Jays.
The 26-year-old backstop continued his ascent into the starting role for Boston as he reeled off his third straight multi-hit performance. Wong provided both the tying and winning runs in the comeback victory with his first career multi-homer game, and through 69 plate appearances in 2023 he's slashing .290/.353/.516 with five doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and 11 runs, and all three of his homers have come in his last two starts. With Reese McGuire's struggles against the running game limiting his playing time despite a respectable .761 OPS, Wong's fantasy value is soaring.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Hits first homer in win
Wong went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Guardians.
Wong led off the fifth inning with a base hit, eventually coming around to score on Alex Verdugo's base hit to open the scoring. Wong would later extend Boston's lead to 4-1 with a two-run, 427-foot homer, his first of the season, in the sixth inning off Nick Sandlin. The 27-year-old Wong has gone 5-for-8 in his last two games against Cleveland. He's now slashing .241/.313/.362 with eight RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base through his first 65 plate appearances this season while splitting catching duties with Reese McGuire.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Takes seat Tuesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
With Reese McGuire (hand) cleared to start Tuesday, Wong will get a breather after starting behind the plate each of the past three days. Wong still looks like Boston's nominal No. 1 catcher, though his pedestrian .549 OPS could soon cost him playing time since McGuire (.850 OPS) has soundly outperformed him at the dish.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: On bench Wednesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Reese McGuire's inability to control the running game early on in the season has allowed Wong to emerge as Boston's No. 1 catcher, but the latter's job security may be starting to loosen. In his last start behind the dish in Monday's loss to the Angels, McGuire threw out the lone would-be base stealer on the day (Shohei Ohtani), and the backstop also went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run. McGuire enters Wednesday with a 372-point edge over Wong in OPS for the season, and the upgrade McGuire offers with the bat may be enough for him to eventually usurp Wong atop the depth chart.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Resting Monday
Wong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Given that the Red Sox are closing out their four-game series with the Angels with a day game along with the fact that he started behind the dish in each of the previous three days, Wong's absence from the lineup Monday comes as little surprise. Reese McGuire will form a battery with starting pitcher Brayan Bello (forearm) in the latter's return from the 15-day injured list.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Getting more time over McGuire
Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Though he appeared to be in the short side of a platoon at catcher with the lefty-hitting Reese McGuire to begin the season, Wong seems to have at least temporarily emerged as the Red Sox's preferred backstop against both right- and left-handed pitching. Wong will be starting again with the Tigers bringing a lefty (Matthew Boyd) to the hill for the second straight day, but the 26-year-old catcher also started over McGuire on two of the last four occasions Boston opposed right-handed pitchers. Wong is hitting just .125/.176/.188 through 17 plate appearances, but he seems to be earning extra time on the basis of McGuire's inability to control the run game. Despite logging only 36 innings behind the dish this season, McGuire has allowed a league-leading 14 stolen bases and hasn't thrown out a would-be base stealer.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Secures backup catcher role
Wong clinched a spot on the Red Sox's Opening Day roster after the team reassigned Jorge Alfaro to minor-league camp Monday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
Though he missed much of the Red Sox's Grapefruit League slate while managing a left hamstring injury, Wong drew back into the spring lineup Monday versus Atlanta and appears to be back to full health as Opening Day approaches. Despite Wong's lack of at-bats and innings behind the dish this spring, manager Alex Cora said he felt comfortable enough with the 26-year-old to keep him on hand as the understudy to Reese McGuire. Since McGuire bats from the left side of the plate, the righty-hitting Wong could end up filling the short side of a platoon at catcher.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Back in Grapefruit League lineup
Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's Grapefruit League game versus Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
After being sidelined for much of camp with a left hamstring strain, Wong was able to catch in a minor-league game over the weekend and is now set to enter the Grapefruit League lineup for the first time since March 2. Wong is competing with non-roster invitee Jorge Alfaro for the No. 2 catcher spot on the Opening Day roster behind projected No. 1 option Reese McGuire.

Red Sox's Connor Wong: Will catch Saturday
Wong (hamstring) is scheduled to catch seven innings in a minor-league game Saturday.
Wong has been getting at-bats as a rover in several minor-league games all week. Saturday's activity will be his return to the catching. He remains a possibility to make the Opening Day roster, but Wong would need to win out over non-roster invitee Jorge Alfaro to break camp as the backup catcher to Reese McGuire.
