Player Outlook
Sean Bouchard enters Cactus League play as the favorite to start in right field for the Rockies to begin 2024. He hit 20 homers and stole 12 bases in just 69 games at Triple-A in 2022, which earned him his first big-league call-up. Last season was mostly wiped out by a ruptured left biceps, though he returned to the major-league club in September. Bouchard has fared well in his limited MLB action to date (.304/.429/.563), but it will be difficult to sustain success if he continues to strike out in roughly one-third of his plate appearances, as he did with the Rockies last season. Coors Field can cover a lot of flaws, and the 27-year-old Bouchard will at least be in the mix as a home streamer if he secures at-bats in spring training.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Optioned to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Bouchard to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Bouchard entered spring training as the perceived favorite for the right field job, but he slashed just .209/.314/.349 in Cactus League play and also missed time with an oblique issue. That was enough to cost him a roster spot, at least at the start of the season. The Rockies appear poised to go with a combination of Charlie Blackmon, Jake Cave and Michael Toglia in right field.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: May be losing grip on starting role

Bouchard began camp slowly due to an oblique issue, which could cost him at-bats to begin the regular season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Bouchard has been on the field regularly since Feb. 23, but he has yet to get on track and is hitting only .174/.286/.348 across 28 plate appearances while also striking out at a 32.1 percent clip this spring. Charlie Blackmon has also played better than expected in right field, which could lead to the veteran playing in the outfield more often rather than serving as the DH. That would cost Bouchard playing time, though he's almost certain to make the roster, at least a bench bat.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Favorite to start in right field

Bouchard is the top candidate to start in right field for the Rockies to begin the 2024 season, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Brenton Doyle and Nolan Jones will almost certainly account for the majority of at-bats in center and left field, respectively, to begin the season in Colorado. However, there are more significant questions in right field, with Bouchard and Hunter Goodman looking to be the primary options. Saunders suggests that the Rockies desire stability at the position, which could give Bouchard the edge to begin the campaign. In 140 career plate appearances, he's maintained a .432 wOBA, though he's also struck out at a 27.9 percent clip.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Activated and optioned

Bouchard (biceps) was activated Monday from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, Kelsey Wingert-Linch of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. Bouchard is recovered from March surgery to repair a ruptured biceps muscle, but he'll remain on the farm for the time being. The 27-year-old is batting .188 with a .569 OPS in 21 plate appearances since he shifted his rehab assignment to Triple-A Albuquerque last week.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Begins rehab assignment

Bouchard (biceps) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, reaching base twice and scoring a run in four plate appearances. Bouchard underwent surgery in March to repair a ruptured left biceps muscle but is tracking toward a return before the end of August. He could wind up receiving a good amount of playing time with the Rockies once activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Ahead of schedule

Bouchard (biceps) is progressing ahead of schedule and could make a late-season return, Rockies manager Bud Black told Thomas Harding of MLB.com on Monday. Bouchard had surgery in mid-March to repair a ruptured left biceps muscle. His recovery has evidently gone swimmingly to this point and he could make it back at some point after the All-Star break, but there remains no clear timetable for the outfielder.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Heads to 60-day IL

Bouchard (biceps) was placed on the 60-day injured list by the Rockies on Saturday. Bouchard is going to miss the first few months of the season at the very least after undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured left biceps muscle. The outfielder looked like he could have a role with Colorado before the injury, and he is a player to keep an eye on for 2024 if he does miss the entirety of 2023.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Undergoes biceps surgery

Bouchard underwent surgery Tuesday to repair his ruptured left biceps muscle, Danielle Allentuck of the Denver Gazette reports. Bouchard suffered the biceps rupture in a Cactus League game last week. There is no estimated timetable yet for his recovery, but early chatter had it as a possible season-ending injury. The 26-year-old was trending toward a sizable role for Colorado in 2023.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Undergoes MRI on biceps

Bouchard underwent an MRI on his ailing left biceps after the injury forced him from Wednesday's game, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Bouchard is hoping for good news when the results come in later Thursday, but imaging being required suggests there's at least some level of concern. The 26-year-old had a big year at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2022 and closed with a strong showing with the Rockies. If healthy, he could have a significant role with the big club in 2023.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Leaves with biceps injury

Bouchard exited Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Angels with a left biceps injury, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Bouchard suffered the injury during an inning-ending strikeout in the top of the first and was replaced in left field by Cole Tucker before the bottom of the first. There's no indication yet as to the severity of the issue. Bouchard put together an impressive body of work between Triple-A Albuquerque and Colorado last season, leaving him poised to potentially claim a regular role with the Rockies out of the gate in 2023.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Stays hot with two hits

Bouchard went 2-for-3 with three RBI in Sunday's loss against the Padres. Bouchard earned his fifth straight start and improved his case for regular playing time with two hits Sunday. He is 6-for-11 in that stretch, including seven walks compared to one strikeout. The Rockies have a crowded outfield now that C.J. Cron will be back in the lineup on a regular basis, but Bouchard has the hot hand and may stick around in the lineup to close the season.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Sitting in second straight game

Bouchard is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Brewers. Bouchard will take a seat for the second straight game Wednesday and has seemingly lost his spot in Colorado's everyday outfield to Yonathan Daza, who returned from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Daza will draw another start in left field and bat second in the series finale.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Out with oblique strain

Bouchard landed on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a strained left oblique. Bouchard earned his first career call-up in mid-June but appeared in just three games before hitting the injured list, going hitless in seven at-bats. He'll be eligible to return next Monday, as the move can be backdated up to three days, but that may not be on the table unless the strain is a particularly mild one.

  • Rockies' Sean Bouchard: Reaches base in debut

Bouchard went 0-for-3 with a walk Sunday against the Padres. Bouchard was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday but did not appear in a game until Sunday when he started in left field and hit eighth to make his big-league debut. The 26-year-old doesn't have much prospect pedigree, but he has consistently shown an above-average bat in the minors. Even so, he isn't likely to find regular playing time in Colorado without a significant number of injuries ahead of him.
