  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Gets nod for ALDS Game 3

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Schmidt will start Wednesday in Game 3 of the ALDS, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

He's the choice over Luis Gil, who will be available in relief for the ALDS. A right lat strain limited Schmidt to just 16 starts and 85.1 innings this season, but he was terrific when healthy, collecting a 2.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 93:30 K:BB. Schmidt is expected to be opposed in Game 3 by Seth Lugo.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Tagged for four runs

Schmidt did not factor into the decision in Sunday's win over Pittsburgh, allowing four earned runs on three hits and four walks in four innings. He struck out five.

Schmidt breezed through three innings before allowing the bases to be loaded with one out in the fourth. Joshua Palacios took advantage, lacing a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2. After walking the leadoff man in the fifth, Schmidt was pulled after 75 pitches, matching his season low. Although he missed over three months due to a lat injury, the 28-year-old Schmidt enjoyed a career year, finishing with a 2.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 93:30 K:BB in 85.1 innings (16 starts).

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Fans seven in loss

Schmidt (5-5) took the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, pitching 5.1 innings while allowing three runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out seven.

The 28-year-old has now struck out seven batters in back-to-back outings that have both resulted in losses. Schmidt was faring well against a tough Baltimore lineup until Anthony Santander knocked a solo homer off the right-field foul pole in the sixth, ending the New York starter's night at an even 100 pitches. Since returning from a strained right lat Sept. 7, Schmidt has pitched to a 2.61 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB across 20.2 frames. He lines up to make his final start of the regular season against the Pirates at home this weekend.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Takes tough-luck loss

Schmidt (5-4) was saddled with the loss Thursday, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out seven.

Schmidt allowed three runs in the first inning but ran into some tough luck along the way with only one of those runs being earned. Despite taking the loss, Schmidt hasn't skipped a beat since returning from the IL due to a strained right lat on Sep 7, increasing his stretch of allowing three runs or less to 14-for-14 on the season. Schmidt's next start is slated to take place at home against the Orioles as he looks to continue to make a case to be a key part of the Yankees' postseason pitching plans.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Fans five in no-decision

Schmidt allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings during a no-decision Friday. He struck out five in the win over Boston.

Schmidt rolled through five shutout frames before serving up a two-run homer to Masataka Yoshida that ended his night just shy of a quality start. Those are the only two runs Schmidt has allowed over 10.1 innings since returning from a lengthy stint on the injured list. He forced 13 swinging strikes Friday, including six via the sweeper. He's sporting a 2.41 ERA with a 74:22 K:BB over 70.1 innings this season. Schmidt is projected to start in Seattle next week.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Solid in return

Schmidt did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-0 win against the Cubs, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two over 4.2 scoreless innings.

Schmidt was lifted at 75 pitches and fell just an out shy of a win in his first appearance since May 26. He kept the Cubs off the board but did show some signs of rust, throwing just 44 strikes and generating only six whiffs. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 2.34 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 69:21 K:BB across 65.1 innings and will try to increase his workload in a matchup with the Red Sox next week.

  • Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Reinstated from IL

The Yankees reinstated Schmidt (lat) from the 60-day injured list Saturday.

After being held out since May due to a strained right lat, Schmidt will now return to the Yankees' rotation and start Saturday's game against the Cubs. The 28-year-old righty made three rehab games in the minors, allowing three earned runs and posting an 18:2 K:BB through 11.1 innings. He was only able to get up to 70 pitches during his most recent outing, however, so there's a good chance he makes a relatively early exit during his first start back in the majors. Ian Hamilton (lat) will return from the 60-day IL alongside Schmidt, pushing Phil Bickford and Nick Burdi off the 40-man roster.
