Roansy Contreras entered 2023 with high expectations, but he fell flat. He got through April with a 3.58 ERA across five starts and 27.2 innings, but his 24:12 K:BB in that span was a warning of what was coming next. Across his next four turns through the rotation, he posted a 5.64 ERA and was quickly shifted to the bullpen before ultimately being demoted to the minors by mid-June. Contreras then struggled with Triple-A Indianapolis, draining all the enthusiasm for him in a fantasy context while also calling his potential role with the team in question moving forward. In order for him to earn a rotation spot and claw his way back to fantasy relevance, Contreras needs to find consistency with his fastball. His slider is dynamic and gets swing and misses, but his fastball was mashed to the tune of .381 average and .598 slugging percentage in 2023. He saw his velocity dip from 95.6 mph to 94.3, which is something to watch in spring training.

    Contreras didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Oakland, allowing one run on four hits with two walks across three innings. He struck out two. After coming out of the bullpen in his first nine outings as a Halo, Contreras was expected to get up to four or five innings in Wednesday's start. However, he threw 61 pitches across three innings before getting yanked. Three of the four hits Contreras allowed went for extra bases. On the year, Contreras owns a 3.82 ERA with 31 strikeouts over 33.0 innings. It's unclear if he'll make another start, but there's not many alternate options on the active roster at the moment. If he does stick in the rotation, he'd likely pitch Tuesday in a rematch with the A's.

The Pirates had initially planned to have Contreras shift to the bullpen to accommodate Velasquez's return Saturday from a three-and-a-half-week stay on the IL, but Velasquez lasted just two innings in his start against the Mariners that day before succumbing to another setback with his elbow. Due to an off day Thursday, the Pirates would be able to get by with a four-man rotation until at least June 6, so Contreras could be available for a relief appearance or two next week if the Pirates opt not to have him start during next weekend's series with St. Louis.
