Tigers' Keider Montero: Earns win in bulk relief
Montero (3-1) earned the win against the Reds on Friday, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over five innings.
Montero entered with two outs in the first inning and tossed five solid frames despite surrendering two solo home runs. The 24-year-old has now allowed three earned runs or fewer in seven of his 10 outings this season, split between starts and bulk-relief appearances. He owns a 4.24 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 34:18 K:BB across 51 innings and lines up to face the Pirates next week, though his role for that outing remains uncertain.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Slated for bulk relief Friday
Montero is slated to handle a bulk relief role Friday versus the Reds, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Brant Hurter will open for the Tigers before handing things off to Montero. Montero is not unfamiliar with bulk relief, having pitched in that role in three of his last five outings. He has not pitched well following an opener this season, however, posting a 7.36 ERA.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Hit hard as primary pitcher
Montero didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Cubs, coughing up four runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 5.2 innings of relief. He struck out four.
The right-hander entered the game after Tyler Holton worked 1.1 innings as the opener, and while Montero had some initial success, homers by Michael Busch in the fifth inning and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw in the seventh took a toll. Reese Olson (finger) and Jackson Jobe (elbow) aren't expected back until at least late June, so Montero should get another couple turns through the rotation, either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever. He'll take a 4.30 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 30:17 K:BB through 46 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next weekend against the Reds.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Working in bulk relief Saturday
Montero is expected to pitch as a bulk reliever Saturday against the Cubs, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
The Tigers will send Tyler Holton to the mound to begin Saturday's contest before turning to Montero to provide length out of the bullpen. Montero has been on a nice run recently, pitching 9.2 shutout frames across his last two outings.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Pitches well in no-decision
Montero did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Royals, allowing seven hits and one walk while striking out two over 4.2 scoreless innings.
Montero threw 53 of 72 pitches for strikes and departed one out short of qualifying for the win. The 24-year-old has now tossed back-to-back scoreless outings but has failed to complete five innings in three of his six starts this season. He'll carry a 4.02 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 26:16 K:BB across 40.1 innings into what will likely be a home matchup against the Cubs next weekend.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Sharp in victory
Montero (2-1) worked five shutout innings in earning the victory during Monday's 3-1 win against the Giants. He surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out three batters.
Montero worked his first scoreless outing of the season Monday, but turned things over to the bullpen after just 79 pitches, suggesting he still has some work to do to earn the full trust of the coaching staff. Regardless, it was a good bounce back outing for the 24-year-old, who had surrendered eight runs over his last two starts spanning nine total innings. The right-hander is now at a 4.54 ERA for the season.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Allows five runs in bulk relief
Montero surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday.
Montero worked in a bulk-relief role for the second straight game, though he took on a starter's workload with 5.2 frames and 98 pitches. The right-hander entered with one out in the first inning after Sean Guenther had allowed allowed a run on three hits, and though Montero got out of that frame without yielding further damage, he gave up four runs across the fourth and fifth innings and was charged with another after he departed in the seventh. It remains to be seen if Montero will continue entering behind an opener, but he should keep getting the ball on a starter's schedule even after Casey Mize (hamstring) returns from the injured list, as Reese Olson (finger) landed on the IL on Monday.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Set for bulk role Monday
Montero is expected to work in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Sean Guenther in Monday's game in St. Louis, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
The Cardinals typically use two left-handed batters -- Lars Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan -- among their top three spots in the lineup, so the Tigers will have the left-handed Guenther open the game with the hope of stymieing the St. Louis offense early on. Guenther is unlikely to work more than a couple of innings before giving way to Montero, who will be making his second straight appearance in a bulk-relief role after covering 3.1 frames and giving up three earned runs out of the bullpen last Tuesday against the Red Sox. Montero should stick around as the de facto fifth member of the Detroit rotation until Casey Mize (hamstring) is cleared to return from the 15-day injured list.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Yields three runs in relief
Montero allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over 3.1 innings during Tuesday's extra-innings win over Boston. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
Montero was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday and worked in a bulk-relief role after Tyler Holton threw 1.2 innings as the opener. Alex Bregman knocked a solo home run in the fourth inning and Boston tallied a pair of runs in the fifth. Montero owns a 4.68 ERA with an 18:11 K:BB through 25 MLB innings. If he sees another turn in the rotation or as a bulk reliever, he'd be lined up to make his next appearance in St. Louis.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Working in bulk relief Tuesday
Montero will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo and is set to be deployed as a bulk reliever in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Montero will fill the opening in the rotation created by Casey Mize's (hamstring) recent move to the injured list, but the 24-year-old righty won't be tasked with handling a traditional starting role. Instead, the Tigers will use Tyler Holton as their opening pitcher, but he's expected to cover no more than one or two innings before giving way to Montero. Montero is fresh off an impressive eight-inning outing with the Tigers against the Rockies at Coors Field last Thursday, when he surrendered one run on five hits while striking out two and walking three.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Likely to start Tuesday's game
Montero has a locker in the Detroit clubhouse and is likely to be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Montero will presumably be called upon to fill in for the injured Casey Mize (hamstring) in the rotation. The 24-year-old right-hander tossed eight frames of one-run ball at Coors Field in a spot start last week before being optioned to Triple-A, but he is eligible to be recalled at any time because he served as the 27th man for a doubleheader that day.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Sent back down after spot start
The Tigers optioned Montero to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
Montero was up as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Rockies and dazzled in a spot start, spinning eight frames of one-run ball at Coors Field. He'll rejoin the rotation at Toledo but will be the top option the next time the Tigers need a spot starter.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Excellent in spot start
Montero (1-1) allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out two over eight innings to earn the win in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Rockies.
Starters Casey Mize and Montero combined to cover 14 of the 18 innings in the twin bill, with Montero doing an excellent job to preserve the bullpen in the nightcap. He was efficient as well, throwing 66 of 92 pitches for strikes, though Beau Brieske handled the ninth inning of the 11-1 win. Over four major-league starts, Montero has a 4.15 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB across 21.2 innings. While he didn't impress in his first two starts of the season, he's been positive as a spot starter in doubleheaders recently and should be the first man up if there's an opening in the Tigers' rotation. However, it's expected he'll return to Triple-A Toledo after being the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Up as 27th man
The Tigers recalled Montero from Triple-A Toledo to serve as their 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Rockies.
Montero's last MLB appearance came during a spot start in a doubleheader April 26, and he'll be called upon to start the nightcap again Thursday. The 24-year-old righty owns a 5.93 ERA through 13.2 innings with the Tigers this season and will likely head back to Toledo once his 27th-man duties are completed.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Sent back down after spot start
The Tigers optioned Montero to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.
Montero made a spot start during Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, yielding one run on four hits and two walks while striking out two across 4.1 innings of work. The right-hander will now rejoin the rotation at Toledo as he awaits another opportunity at the big-league level.

Tigers' Keider Montero: Starting Game 2 as 27th man
The Tigers added Montero to their roster as the 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader, and he will start the nightcap against Baltimore, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
The Tigers didn't use Montero out of the bullpen during Game 1, so they'll give the 24-year-old his third start of the season Saturday. He's allowed eight earned runs over 9.1 innings in the majors so far this season but will have a decent chance to bounce back against an Orioles offense that ranks 20th in the majors with a .692 OPS.
