Padres' Jhony Brito: Gets season-ending surgery
Brito underwent a UCL internal brace surgery and a repair of his flexor tendon last month and will miss the entire 2025 season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Brito was moved to the 60-day injured list at the beginning of April, but Cassavell's report provides an explanation for why the Padres made that transaction. He's facing a lengthy recovery and will shift his focus on preparing for the 2026 season after going under the knife.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Moved to 60-day IL
The Padres transferred Brito (forearm) to the 60-day injured list Thursday.
Brito was shut down from throwing during spring training after experiencing diminished velocity, and he's been on the IL since the start of the season due to a forearm strain. His move to the 60-day IL guarantees he'll be out until at least late May, but there's also a possibility he undergoes surgery to address the issue and misses more time. His roster spot will be given to Oscar Gonzalez, who was selected to the 40-man roster Thursday but will remain in Triple-A for now.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Shelved with forearm strain
The Padres placed Brito (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to a right forearm strain.
Brito didn't make any appearances after Aug. 10 last season due to an elbow strain, and though he was cleared prior to spring training, he was shut down after experiencing diminished velocity and renewed soreness during a Cactus League appearance March 4. The Padres will wait and see how Brito responds to a period of rest and rehab, but given the recurring nature of his elbow/forearm issues, surgery could be in the forecast for the right-hander.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Dealing with elbow soreness
Brito has "backed off throwing" due to a sore right elbow, per MLB.com.
Brito began spring training competing for a spot in San Diego's rotation, but manager Mike Shildt announced in early March that the right-hander would be tabbed for a long-relief role. Now it's unlikely Brito will be ready for Opening Day, as he experienced diminished velocity and elbow soreness in his most recent spring outing, which took place back on March 4. If Brito begins the campaign on the injured list, Alek Jacob would have a clearer path to a roster spot as a long reliever.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Dismissed from starter competition
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday that he envisions using Brito in a long-relief role this season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Shildt's comments effectively remove Brito from the competition for the No. 5 starter role, leaving Kyle Hart, Matt Waldron, Randy Vasquez and Stephen Kolek as the remaining candidates for the final spot in the rotation. Brito previously made 13 big-league starts for the Yankees in 2023, but he worked exclusively in relief over his 26 regular-season appearances for the Padres last season, logging a 4.12 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB in 43.2 innings.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Could compete for rotation spot
Brito (elbow) could be ready to pitch by the start of spring training and is an option for a spot in the Padres' starting rotation, per MLB.com.
Brito ended last season on the 60-day IL due to a right elbow strain, but the injury didn't require surgery. San Diego is optimistic that the right-handed hurler will be healthy and ready to throw by the time Cactus League play begins Feb. 21, and if that's the case, he could be among several pitchers competing for a spot at the back of the team's rotation. Brito was a part of the Padres' haul in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the Yankees, and he posted a 4.12 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB over 43.2 innings across 26 appearances -- all out of the bullpen -- during his first season in San Diego.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Recalled, placed on 60-day IL
The Padres recalled Brito from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right elbow strain.
Brito landed on the IL at El Paso earlier this month, and the Padres have since clarified that he's dealing with a right elbow strain. Part of the Padres' return in the offseason trade that sent Juan Soto to the Yankees, Brito will end the season with a 4.12 ERA and 1.35 WHIP over 43.2 innings (26 appearances) with San Diego. His move to the 60-day IL frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Nick Ahmed, whose contract was selected in a corresponding move.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Goes on Triple-A IL
Triple-A El Paso placed Brito on its 7-day injured list Aug. 23 with an unspecified injury.
The Padres optioned Brito to Triple-A on Aug. 11, with the right-hander making one appearance for El Paso before going down with an injury. The severity of the injury isn't known, making it unclear whether Brito has a chance to pitch again before the 2024 season concludes.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Sent back to El Paso
The Padres optioned Brito to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Two days after being called up from El Paso, Brito will return to the minors. Since Brito was needed to cover 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in Saturday's 9-8 win and was unlikely to be available for the next couple of games, the Padres will swap him out of the bullpen for a fresh arm in right-hander Sean Reynolds, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Brought up to big leagues
The Padres recalled Brito from Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Brito will join the big club for the first time since being optioned June 24, taking Randy Vasquez's place on the 26-man roster. Brito has pitched 41.1 innings for the Padres this season, logging a 4.35 ERA with a 26:9 K:BB. He hasn't recorded a hold and has blown three saves.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Going to Triple-A
The Padres optioned Brito to Triple-A El Paso on Monday.
Brito will move off the 26-man active roster Monday to make room for right-hander Adam Mazur, who will start Tuesday against the Nationals. Brito had served in long relief for the Padres this season, posting a 4.35 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB over 41.1 frames.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Records two outs in loss
Brito struck out a batter over two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Padres.
After the Padres lost Yu Darvish (groin) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) to the injured list last week, Brito looked to be a potential candidate to enter the rotation, but San Diego instead called up Randy Vasquez and Adam Mazur to fill the open starting roles. Vasquez and Mazur have already been confirmed for their second turns through the rotation Thursday and Sunday versus the Diamondbacks, respectively, so Brito will stick around in a lower-leverage role out of the San Diego bullpen. Since he fell short in his bid for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, Brito has made 19 relief appearances for the Padres this season, going 1-2 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 31 innings.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Works in long relief Saturday
Brito struck out two over 2.1 perfect innings of relief Saturday in the Padres' 9-6 loss to the Giants.
Brito's appearance was already his third of the season. He had previously given up two earned runs while recording just one out while taking the loss in the Padres' season opener against the Dodgers on March 20 in South Korea, then was charged with another blown save after yielding two runs and recording one out in San Diego's domestic home opener Thursday versus the Giants. After the Padres returned home from the two-game series in Seoul, South Korea, Brito still looked to be a candidate for the vacant fifth spot in the San Diego rotation, but manager Mike Shildt ultimately elected to go with knuckleballer Matt Waldron for that role. Despite his two rocky appearances to begin the season, Brito's strong showing in long relief of Dylan Cease on Saturday could position him to be next in line for the rotation if the Padres should lose a starting pitcher at some point.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Continues bid for rotation spot
Brito allowed five hits and struck out six over 3.1 scoreless innings during Monday's exhibition against the Cubs. He didn't factor into the decision.
Brito has looked sharp so far this spring, surrendering three runs on nine hits while striking out 10 over 8.1 innings of work. He's also yet to issue a walk. The 26-year-old has put himself in a good position early on to win a spot in San Diego's starting rotation, though his work is far from over, as Matt Waldron has also been a bright spot thus far for the Padres.

Padres' Jhony Brito: Dealt to SD
The Yankees traded Brito, Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Randy Vasquez and Kyle Higashioka to the Padres on Wednesday in exchange for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Brito logged a 4.28 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 90.1 innings in his first major-league season last year. While his stats may not jump off the page, he showed promise toward the end of the season when the Yankees moved him to the bullpen. However, considering the Padres are currently thin on major-league rotation arms, Brito may resume duties as a starter in 2024.

Yankees' Jhony Brito: Notches first career save
Brito gave up a solo home run and struck out three over 3.2 relief innings Friday to record his first career save in a 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
A hit-by-pitch and a ninth-inning blast by Christian Walker were the only blemishes on Brito's line. The 25-year-old right-hander has been outstanding in a long relief role down the stretch -- over five September appearances spanning 15 innings, Brito's collected three wins in addition to Friday's save with a 1.20 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB.

Yankees' Jhony Brito: Continues to shine in bulk relief
Brito (8-7) earned the win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, striking out three batters over three perfect innings out of the bullpen.
Luke Weaver handled the first four frames for New York, with Brito taking over in the fifth. Brito rolled through nine batters, fanning three and throwing 32 of 47 pitches for strikes. The rookie right-hander was up-and-down in a starting role earlier this season, but he seems to have found his groove recently as a bulk reliever. Since moving into that role Aug. 24, Brito has posted a 1.06 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB over 17 innings across six appearances while picking up four wins against one loss.

Yankees' Jhony Brito: Sharp in seventh win
Brito (7-7) picked up the win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, allowing three hits and a walk over 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. He struck out two.
Randy Vasquez got the start and looked good through three innings, but when he began to fade in the fourth, Brito stepped in and was even more effective, firing 29 of 38 pitches for strikes. The two rookie right-handers combined for what would have qualified as a quality start from a single pitcher -- two earned runs over six frames -- and the Yankees may consider keeping them together in a tandem arrangement to fill their fifth starter spot over the final weeks of the season. Brito is thriving in his current long-relief role, grabbing three wins in his last five appearances while posting a 1.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB through 14 innings.
