  • Angels' Luis Barrera: Reassigned to minors camp

The Angels reassigned Barrera to minor-league camp Tuesday. Barrera spent most of last season with the Athletics' Triple-A affiliate, slashing .263/.329/.393 with 45 RBI over 348 plate appearances. He's 6-for-22 this spring, which isn't bad by any means, but the Angels will let him develop in the minors for a little longer.

  • Angels' Luis Barrera: Joins Halos

Barrera signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Thursday. Barrera spent 2022 in the Athletics organization and was at the Triple-A level for most of the year, where he had a .263/.329/.436 slash line in 85 games. He also played in 32 games with the big club and had a .632 OPS. The 27-year-old should serve as organizational depth for the Angels.

  • Luis Barrera: Becomes free agent

Barrera has elected free agency, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports. Barrera was designated for assignment near the end of the 2022 campaign, and he's since chosen to test free agency. • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Sent outright to Triple-A

The Athletics outrighted Barrera to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Oakland has now moved Barrera off its 40-man roster on two occasions this season, with the 26-year-old outfielder clearing waivers both times. Barrera has seen action in 32 games with the Athletics this season, but he's spent the bulk of the campaign in Las Vegas, where he's produced a .271/.331/.451 batting line over 294 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Designated for assignment

The Athletics designated Barrera for assignment Friday. Barrera was placed on waivers in order to make room on the roster for fellow outfielder Conner Capel, who was claimed off waivers Friday. Barrera holds a .632 OPS in the majors this season, which jumps to .782 in the minors over 294 Triple-A plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Solid work at Triple-A level

Barrera has a .282/.327/.483 slash line with 18 extra-base hits (nine doubles, six triples, three home runs) and 27 RBI over 37 games since being optioned back to Triple-A Las Vegas on June 20. Barrera has also gone 4-for-6 in stolen-base attempts and scored 26 runs, all while striking out at an acceptable 19.4 percent clip. The 26-year-old has logged 32 games at the big-league level thus far this season, and considering his ability to play all three outfield spots and the Athletics' desire to evaluate young players at the tail end of a non-contending season, he seems a likely candidate for a September promotion.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Returns to Las Vegas

The Athletics optioned Barrera to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. During his five-week stint with the big club, Barrera appeared in 32 games and slashed .234/.294/.338 with a home run and three steals. The Athletics briefly deployed Barrera in the everyday lineup during that five-week period, but he was never able to hit well enough to solidify himself as a regular. With Barrera now headed back to the minors, Cristian Pache and Chad Pinder should have slightly clearer paths to picking up at-bats out of the outfield.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Multi-hit effort in win

Barrera went 2-for-3 in a win over the Royals on Sunday. Barrera drew a second straight start and parlayed it into his first multi-hit effort since May 25. The 26-year-old has cooled off considerably over the last few weeks, as even Sunday's solid effort leaves his slash line over his last 16 games at an abysmal .114/.184/.143.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Gets second straight start

Barrera will start in left field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Royals, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Barrera was rewarded with the start after going 1-for-3 with a double in Saturday's 2-0 loss.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Mired in multi-game slump

Barrera is 0-for-17 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and four strikeouts over his last seven games. The 26-year-old outfielder was carrying an impressive .333/.383/.500 slash line over his first 47 plate appearances before the skid began, but those respective figures now sit at .237/.303/.356. However, with Barrera still striking out at just a 19.7 percent clip for the season, he's giving himself a fighting chance of snapping out of the slump in short order while seeing regular playing time in the corner outfield spots.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Laces pair of doubles Friday

Barrera went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run in a win over the Angels on Friday. Barrera's punishment of big-league arms continued in remarkable fashion Friday with his second straight multi-hit effort. The pair of two-baggers were his first extra-base hits since a pinch-hit three-run home run last Saturday, but Barrera is still hitting a blistering .474 (9-for-19) over that span.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Walkoff homer

Barrera hit a pinch-hit walkoff three-run home run Saturday in Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Angels. He took Raisel Iglesias deep to the pull side on a hanging breaking ball. Barrera has played roughly half the time since getting called up earlier this week, but he is also an option to enter games off the bench, as he showed with this clutch hit. Chad Pinder and Cristian Pache have left a lot to be desired this season, so Barrera could continue to earn opportunities. He is hitting .300 with one home run, one steal and a 2:2 K:BB in 13 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Moved up to big-league roster

The Athletics selected Barrera's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Barrera was previously moved off the Athletics' 40-man roster in mid-April, but he earned his way back to the big leagues after submitting an .819 OPS to go with two stolen bases in 23 games with Las Vegas. He'll assume the 40-man roster spot and 26-man active roster spot of Billy McKinney, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Barrera should provide a defensive upgrade over McKinney, but he may have to settle for a reserve role with Ramon Laureano, Cristian Pache and Chad Pinder likely ahead of him in the pecking order for playing time in the outfield.

  • Athletics' Luis Barrera: Loses 40-man spot

The Athletics designated Barrera for assignment Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Formerly one of the top prospects in Oakland's system, Barrera has seen his standing in the organization take a hit since posting an .870 OPS at Double-A Midland in 2019. He received limited action with the big club in 2021 but otherwise turned in a pedestrian campaign at Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing .276/.348/.393 across 386 plate appearances while stealing 10 bases in 12 attempts. Barrera was expected to compete for a spot in Oakland's talent-deprived outfield in spring training, but he was late to camp due to visa issues and never made much of a run at a roster spot. Now 26 years old, the prospect luster has largely worn off on Barrera, who will lose his spot on the 40-man roster with Oakland bringing aboard reliever Gabe Klobosits in a corresponding move.
