Player Outlook
Jonathan Aranda has done nothing but rake since advancing to the advanced levels of the minor leagues. .330/.426/.495 in High A ball, .325/.410/.540 in Double-A, and .328/.421/.565 in Tirple-A ball over nearly 900 plate appearances. However, none of that has translated into major league success as he owns a career .212/.311/.346 line in 190 major league plate appearances sprinkled over the past two seasons. Aranda is a patient hitter who is very accepting of his walks and made solid contact s a minor leaguer but the contact has been an issue as a big leaguer with a 28% strikeout rate and and 78% contact rate at the big league level. Aranda is nearly undraftable until the reserves for a few reasons, primarily because he is DH-only on draft day. Secondly, he is a terrible defender with poor range and has trouble with lefties so he loses playing time due to both deficiencies. Some may label him as Luiz Arraez lite whereas it would be more prudent to call him an Arraez knockoff.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Officially placed on injured list

The Rays placed Aranda (finger) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Aranda is expected to be out until at least early May after having surgery March 21 to insert a pin in his fractured right ring finger. The 25-year-old had been slated to open the season as Tampa Bay's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, and he should eventually reclaim that role once healthy.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: IL-bound with fractured finger

Aranda will begin the season on the injured list after being diagnosed Thursday with a fractured right ring finger, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He's scheduled to have surgery to insert a pin into his finger and will likely miss 4-to-6 weeks, per Topkin. Aranda suffered the injury while fielding a grounder Tuesday. The 25-year-old had been slated to open the season as Tampa Bay's primary designated hitter against right-handed pitching, but the injury will likely keep him out for at least all of April. In Aranda's stead, Curtis Mead, Harold Ramirez and Amed Rosario could benefit from some added opportunities against right-handed pitching early on in the season.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Locking up roster spot

Aranda has maintained a 1.124 OPS across 29 plate appearances in the Grapefruit League. Aranda entered spring as a strong candidate to earn a large-side platoon role at DH. He's done everything in his power to lock up those plate appearances, as he's struck out just 6.9 percent of the time while clubbing five extra-base hits. While it's not yet clear if Aranda will be a regular part of the Rays' lineup, he appears to be a safe bet to crack the Opening Day roster.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Could DH versus righties

Aranda could be in line to serve in a strong-side platoon at designated hitter for the Rays, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. It sounds as if Aranda is the top candidate to step into the role vacated by Luke Raley as the DH versus righties and occasional first baseman. A trade of Harold Ramirez, which seems likely, could further clarify Aranda's role. Aranda has posted just a .656 OPS over 190 plate appearances during his limited chances at the major-league level, but the 25-year-old sports a .328/.421/.565 batting line with 43 home runs over the last two seasons at Triple-A Durham. Even if the left-handed batter sits regularly against southpaws, he boasts big fantasy potential.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Smashes grand slam in win

Aranda went 2-for-6 with a grand slam, a double and six RBI in Sunday's 12-8 win over the Blue Jays. Aranda kicked things off with an RBI-single in the first and followed up with a grand slam off Wes Parsons in the second. He added an RBI-double later on for his sixth run driven in. Aranda only had seven RBI and one home run through 33 games coming into Sunday and finishes the year slashing .230/.340/.368. Overall, the 25-year-old struggled at the plate in limited action, but it was certainly encouraging to see him end the regular season on a high note as he looks to help the Rays make a postseason run.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Triples in win

Aranda went 1-for-2 with a triple, three walks, an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 8-6 win over the Red Sox. Aranda got the scoring started in the second inning after Wilyer Abreu lost a flyball in the Tropicana Field catwalks, resulting in an RBI triple. The 25-year-old Aranda, who got the start at DH, would reach base three more times via walks in the contest, scoring a pair of runs. Aranda's playing time's been sparse since he was called up Aug. 15. He's gone 5-for-22 (.227) with one home run in that span. He did post eye-popping numbers in the minors, however, batting .339 with 25 homers and a 1.063 OPS across 95 Triple-A games.

Aranda was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 25-year-old was just optioned Tuesday but is already back on the roster with Yandy Diaz going on paternity leave. Aranda could get a start or two at first base while Diaz is away. • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Heads back to minors

Aranda was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. He was up with the Rays for two days while Josh Lowe was on the family medical emergency list, but he'll now head back to Durham with Lowe back in the fold. Aranda has crushed Triple-A pitching again this season, but it hasn't led to much of an opportunity in the majors.

Aranda was recalled by the Rays on Saturday and will bat seventh as the designated hitter against Atlanta, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Aranda was recalled to take the place of Josh Lowe, who landed on the bereavement list. Aranda struggled to a .192/.276/.321 line in his 32-game debut last year but has hit .342/.455/.589 with 16 homers in 71 games for Triple-A Durham this season.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Losing playing time to Walls

Aranda is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Guardians, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Aranda will sit in favor of Taylor Walls for the second game in a row. While Aranda has a strong track record as a hitter in the minors, his defense is below average, so he needs to be hitting to justify getting at-bats. He is slashing .100/.273/.259 over the last 10 games.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Homers in win

Aranda went 2-for-4 with one homer, one RBI and three runs scored in Thursday's 10-5 victory over the Blue Jays. Aranda sparked the Rays offense with a leadoff home run off Jose Berrios in the first inning and came around to score again in the second on a Wander Franco single. The third-baseman reached base three times in the contest, scoring a run on each occasion. It was a nice game for Aranda, who was held hitless in the previous three-game series against the Astros. The promising rookie is hitting a solid .278 with two homers and six RBI through 22 games this season, while also drawing six walks.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Day off Wednesday

Aranda isn't starting Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Launches first career homer

Aranda went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader split with the Blue Jays. He took Alek Manoah deep in the seventh inning for his first career big-league homer, briefly giving the Rays a 2-1 lead before the bullpen imploded in the bottom of the frame on the way to a 7-2 loss. Aranda has started four straight games, getting the nod at first base in the matinee and going 1-for-4 before sliding over to second base for the nightcap. With Brandon Lowe (back) on the IL once again, the 24-year-old could see a significant role in the short term. Aranda has hit safely in six straight appearances, and since rejoining the big-league roster in September, he's batting .353 (6-for-17) with two doubles and Tuesday's homer.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Awarded second straight start

Aranda will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game at Toronto, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Rays manager Kevin Cash suggested over the weekend that Aranda might pick up more playing time, and the skipper will stay true to his word while the rookie receives his second start in a row. In a limited sample of 26 plate appearances in the majors this season, Aranda has produced a .462 on-base percentage. He'll need to continue to rack up walks and make contact at a high clip to ensure he maintains steady at-bats.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Headed back to Tampa

The Rays plan to call up Aranda from Triple-A Durham on Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays are in need of infield depth with Wander Franco (wrist) expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks. Aranda was in the majors for a very brief stretch in late June, though he should have a better chance to stick this time around. A well-regarded prospect, Aranda has maintained a .330/.403/.546 line with 13 home runs and four stolen bases across 325 plate appearances with Triple-A Durham this season.

  • Rays' Jonathan Aranda: Returned to minors

Tampa Bay optioned Aranda to Triple-A Durham on Sunday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. The 24-year-old's first stint in the big leagues lasted only five days, and Aranda appeared in two games over that stretch, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Though Aranda doesn't have much left to prove in the minors, the Rays want him to play on an everyday basis, and that opportunity won't be afforded to him in Tampa Bay after shortstop Wander Franco (quadriceps) was cleared to return from the 10-day injured list Sunday.
