Player Outlook
There have been some incredible peaks and valleys in Jack Suwinski's young career. He's endured not one but two 0-for-29 stretches in his two seasons, the first earning him a trip back to the minors in 2022. The Pirates took a different approach to Suwinski's prolonged slump in 2023, instead giving him a few days off to work with his hitting coaches, which worked as Suwinski finished strong in September. Through it all he led Pittsburgh in home runs with 26, in turn becoming the fastest player in franchise history to reach 40 career homers. Suwinski improved against left-handed pitching in his sophomore season, though a .200/.295/.300 line is still hardly anything to write home about. He can also run as evidenced by his 81st percentile sprint speed and 13 steals in 15 attempts last season, so the power/speed potential is here if you can stomach the ups and downs and occasional days off against southpaws.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Slugs key homer

Suwinski went 2-for-4 with a walk and a grand slam Sunday against the Phillies. Suwinski belted a game-deciding grand slam in the sixth inning, his second long ball of the season. He's gotten off to a slow start to the new campaign, tallying only two multi-hit games and only one extra-base hit in addition to his long balls. On the other hand, Suwinski has shown some improvement in his skill profile, most notably that he's struck out only 17.2 percent of the time across 58 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Out of lineup Friday

Suwinski is not in the lineup for Friday's game in Philadelphia. The Phillies are starting southpaw Cristopher Sanchez, so the left-handed hitting Suwinski will take a seat. The Pirates are going with Bryan Reynolds in left field and Edward Olivares in right.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Taking seat against southpaw

Suwinski is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest in Philadelphia. The Phillies are sending southpaw Ranger Suarez to the hill, so the left-handed hitting Suwinski will get a breather. Bryan Reynolds and Edward Olivares will occupy the corner outfield spots for the Pirates.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Slugs first homer of 2024

Suwinski went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored Wednesday against the Nationals. Suwinski tagged Nats reliever Robert Garcia for the solo shot in the sixth inning, moving the Pirates to within one run of Washington. While they would end up dropping their first game of the season, Suwinski managed to collect his first multi-hit performance of the campaign. The third-year big-leaguer hasn't done enough to cement himself as an everyday starter for Pittsburgh, but his mix of speed, power and youth makes him an intriguing fantasy option.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: On bench again against southpaw

Suwinski is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest against the Marlins, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The Pirates have faced a lefty in each of the first two games of the season and Suwinski has been on the bench both times. Suwinski did get two plate appearances Thursday after entering as a pinch hitter and will be an option as a replacement again Friday. Edward Olivares is in right field.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Sitting against lefty

Suwinski is out of the lineup for Thursday's season opener against the Marlins. The lefty-hitting Suwinski finds himself on the bench for Opening Day with Miami throwing left-hander Jesus Luzardo. Connor Joe will replace him in the corner outfield.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Hoping to improve against lefties

Suwinski has worked on shortening his swing against left-handed pitching this offseason, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Suwinski had a positive overall season in 2023, posting a .793 OPS with a 112 wRC+ and .341 wOBA across 534 plate appearances. However, his OPS tumbled to .608 and he had only eight extra-base hits in 132 plate appearances against lefties. He's made adjustments to try to improve in that regard, though it's unclear if the Pirates will give him consistent run without the platoon advantage, as Bryan Reynolds is capable of shifting to center field while Connor Joe could enter the lineup against southpaws.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Getting back on track

Suwinksi went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Thursday against the Phillies. Suwinski has had a poor second half of the season, though he's turned things around within the last few weeks. Since the start of September, he's maintained a .295 batting average (23-for-78) while hitting four home runs, driving in 16 and scoring 12 runs across 24 games. Despite some inconsistencies, Suwinski should be locked into a starting outfield role in Pittsburgh to begin 2024.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Sitting against lefty

Suwinski is not in the lineup Friday against the Reds. Miguel Andujar, Ji Hwan Bae and Henry Davis will start across the outfield as the Pirates take on left-hander Andrew Abbott. Suwinski has slashed just .178/.282/.257 in 117 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Belts homer No. 25

Suwinski went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's victory over Washington. Suwinski jumped on the first pitch he saw from Josiah Gray in the second inning and launched it into the stands in right field for his 25th home run of the season. The center fielder also added a single on the day, giving him his fifth multi-hit game this month, and he's now hit safely in seven straight. Suwinski has been very productive in September, batting .324 with three homers, nine RBI and five runs scored. He's also recorded at least one RBI in six of his last seven games.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: More consistent contact

Suwinski went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Friday against Atlanta. Suwinski has slumped for nearly the entire second half of the season and had lost playing time as a result. However, with Andrew McCutchen (Achilles) out for the season, Suwinski should take over a strong-side platoon role between designated hitter and the corner outfield. His recent production provides some hope that he can take advantage of the opportunity, as he has three home runs across his last eight games and has limited his strikeout rate to a relatively low 23.1 percent clip in that span.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Swats two-run homer

Suwinski went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 4-2 win against Milwaukee on Monday. The Pirates were behind by two runs in the fourth inning when Suwinski tied the score with his two-run blast to center field. The long ball was just his second since July 24, a span during which he's slashed a dreadful .141/.286/.263 over 33 contests. Suwinski has struck out at a 35.6 percent clip since the All-Star break, the worst mark among qualified MLB hitters in that span.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Snaps slump Wednesday

Suwinski went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Royals. Suwinski had gone without a homer since July 24, and he didn't have a multi-hit effort in August prior to Wednesday. While he's been inconsistent, he's starting to get things turned around, hitting safely in five of his last six games, though he also snapped a 10-game RBI drought Wednesday. For the season, the outfielder has 22 homers, 56 RBI, 51 runs scored and nine stolen bases, but he's slashing just .207/.334/.445 through 117 contests. Suwinski will likely remain limited to a strong-side platoon role down the stretch.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: On bench again Thursday

Suwinski remains out of the lineup Thursday versus the Cubs. Suwinksi hasn't drawn a start since Monday and will remain on the bench Thursday as the Pirates take on left-hander Justin Steele. • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Sitting out versus lefty

Suwinski is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Cardinals, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The Cardinals are starting southpaw Zack Thompson, so the lefty-hitting Suwinski will hit the bench for the series finale. He also didn't start Tuesday against right-hander Adam Wainwright after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in Monday's series opener. Suwinski is going through one of his patented slumps this month with a .382 OPS so far in August.

Josh Palacios will patrol center field and bat sixth Tuesday against the Cardinals and right-hander Adam Wainwright.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Sits versus southpaw

Suwinski is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins. He'll retreat to the bench while the Twins bring southpaw Dallas Keuchel to the hill for the series finale. The lefty-hitting Suwinski has been far more effective against right-handers (124 wRC+) than southpaws this season, batting .205/.300/.308 (70 wRC+) in 90 plate appearances versus same-handed pitching.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Not starting versus lefty

Suwinski isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against the Reds, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He went 0-for-3 off the bench in those contests before bouncing back with his first multi-hit effort since July 4 in Monday's win. The outfielder is up to 21 homers, 52 RBI, 42 runs scored, 13 doubles and seven stolen bases while slashing .230/.349/.513 over 88 games.
