  • Jorge Ona: Released by San Diego

Ona (undisclosed) was released by the Padres on Dec. 18.

Ona slashed just .218/.301/.391 over 35 games for Double-A San Antonio in 2023 and didn't play after mid-June due to an undisclosed injury. He'll turn 27 next week and last appeared in the majors in 2020.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Playing at Double-A level

Ona (elbow) has appeared in three games this season for Double-A San Antonio, going 2-for-12 with two walks and an RBI.

San Diego outrighted Ona off its 40-man roster in November, after he was sidelined for most of the 2021 campaign while he recovered from surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow. He incurred a setback during his rehab assignment at Double-A late in the season, but the 25-year-old outfielder looks to be healthy for the start of the 2022 campaign.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Sent outright to Triple-A

Ona (elbow) was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.

Ona missed most of the 2021 campaign after he underwent elbow surgery, but he began a rehab assignment late in the year. His removal from the 40-man roster will clear room for several prospects whose contracts were selected ahead of the Rule 5 draft.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Moves rehab to Double-A

The Padres transferred Ona's rehab assignment to Double-A San Antonio on Saturday. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in his San Antonio debut.

Ona was cleared to make a jump in difficultly on his rehab assignment after he went 1-for-9 with a double and an RBI in his three games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. The Padres will presumably keep the 24-year-old on assignment for close to the entire 20-day rehab window before reinstating him from the 60-day injured list and then likely optioning him to San Antonio or Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Kicks off rehab assignment

Ona (elbow) began a rehab assignment Aug. 12 with the Padres' Arizona Complex League affiliate and has gone 1-for-9 with a double, a walk, two runs and an RBI through three games.

The 24-year-old outfielder has been sidelined all season after requiring a procedure in May to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. More than three months later, Ona finally looks to be healthy again, but he'll essentially need to go through a de facto spring training before the Padres reinstate him from the 60-day injured list. The San Diego outfield was already overflowing with talent even before shortstop Fernando Tatis converted to right field, so Ona will presumably be optioned to the minors once his rehab assignment concludes.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Shifts to 60-day IL

Ona (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday.

The 24-year-old was already on the shelf when he underwent surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow Tuesday, and the move to the 60-day IL won't affect his potential return timeline since he's been ruled out 6-to-8 weeks. Ona could be back in mid-June if he hits the front end of the recovery timetable.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Undergoes surgery

Ona (elbow) underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow Tuesday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Ona has been sidelined since the start of the regular season due to right elbow inflammation, and he'll be sidelined approximately 6-to-8 more weeks following his surgery. Once Ona is cleared to return, it's not yet clear whether he'll report to the major-league club or Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Dealing with elbow injury

Ona was placed on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation Thursday.

Ona will begin the 2021 season in the minors after he hit .105 with one home run, two RBI and 11 strikeouts in 11 spring games this year. However, he's now dealing with an elbow issue that will keep him sidelined early in the year. The severity of Ona's injury isn't yet clear, and the Padres haven't announced a timetable for his return.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Optioned to alternate camp

Ona was optioned to the Padres' alternate training site Friday.

Ona was initially slated to start Friday's contest against the Mariners, but he was scratched from the lineup and sent down after Tommy Pham (hand) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. During his time with the major-league club, Ona went 3-for-12 with a home run, two RBI and seven strikeouts while appearing in five games.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Launches first homer

Ona went 1-for-3 with a solo home run during Thursday's win over the Giants.

Ona recorded the first hit of his major-league career with a solo homer against Drew Smyly in the fourth inning. The rookie, who was serving as a designated hitter, was recalled Monday to fill in for Luis Campusano (wrist). The 23-year-old Ona was a powerhouse at the Triple-A level last year, slugging .348/.417/.539 with five home runs and 18 RBI across 25 games.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Draws walk in debut

Ona went 0-for-2 with a walk in Monday's 1-0 win over Colorado.

It was a quiet day for San Diego's usually potent offense as the team mustered just six hits and one run overall. Ona grounded out in his first major-league at-bat and drew a four-pitch walk his second time up before reaching on an error in his third trip to the plate. He was then lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. The rookie functioned as the team's designated hitter in his debut, but it remains to be seen how -- and how often -- he'll be deployed moving forward.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Debuting Monday

Ona was recalled by the Padres and will start Monday's game against the Rockies.

Ona was recalled to provide a right-handed bat for the Padres after Luis Campusano (wrist) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday. The 23-year-old was dominant over 25 games at the Triple-A level last year as he slashed .348/.417/.539 with five home runs and 18 RBI. He'll serve as the designated hitter and bat seventh Monday.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Does not make active roster

Ona is not part of the Padres' 30-man roster.

Ona has yet to play above the Double-A level, so he was never a serious candidate for a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 23-year-old will open the campaign developing his tools at the team's alternate training site.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Sent to minor-league camp

Ona (shoulder) was optioned to minor-league camp Sunday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Ona collected a pair of hits -- including a home run -- in seven Cactus League at-bats in his first game action since undergoing shoulder surgery last July. He'll likely head to Double-A Amarillo to begin the 2020 campaign.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Will be eased into action

Ona (shoulder) will have his workload monitored throughout spring training, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Ona is recovering from a torn labrum that limited him to 25 minor-league games last season. While the team will take a cautious approach with the 23-year-old as he participates in his first big-league camp, Padres general manager A.J. Preller indicated that Ona "has had a good recovery." The young outfielder is likely to begin the season at the Double-A level.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Added to 40-man roster

Ona (shoulder) was added to the Padres' 40-man roster Wednesday.

Given how strong the Padres' farm system is and the amount of solid prospects they left unprotected ahead of the Rule 5 draft, this was a strong vote of confidence for Ona, whose season was cut short due to shoulder surgery. Prior to the injury, he hit .348 with five home runs in 25 games at Double-A. Look for him to spend most, if not all of 2020 in the upper levels of the minors.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Rehabbing from shoulder surgery

Ona underwent season-ending surgery on his right shoulder in July, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Ona had been on the shelf at Double-A Amarillo since May 3 before opting for surgery more than two months later after treating the shoulder injury through rest and rehab proved unsuccessful. The Padres are hopeful the 22-year-old outfielder will be close to full strength by next spring, but the injury could result in the organization choosing not to protect him from the Rule 5 draft this winter. Ona was off to a hot start with Amarillo before being shut down, slashing .348/.417/.539 (166 wRC+) across 103 plate appearances.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Huge April in Double-A

Ona slashed .367/.441/.582 for Double-A Amarillo in April, Bill Center of Padres.com reports.

The 22-year-old is locked in at the dish in Double-A, as he's bagged 29 hits over 79 at-bats, five of which have left the yard. He's also showed good plate discipline, drawing 11 walks which has helped the excellent on-base percentage. Per Center, Ona is top-five in the Texas League in batting average, slugging percentage, OPS, RBI and on-base percentage.

  • Padres' Jorge Ona: Surging at Low-A

Ona, 20, is hitting .378 over his last 10 games for Low-A Fort Wayne.

The Cuban import is now hitting over .300 on the season, though he is still striking out a bit too much. Ona has 80 strikeouts in 79 contests. His power stroke remains a work in progress, but the Padres expect that in time the home runs will come as well. Ona remains a prospect to watch for San Diego.
