Edgar Quero likely would have made his big-league debut late last season had a mid-August back injury not cost him most of the final month-plus. He made a mechanical adjustment early in the season and slashed .333/.410/.527 with nine home runs, a 15.7 percent strikeout rate and a 9.6 percent walk rate in his final 56 games split between Double-A and Triple-A. That would be a major development for any prospect, but particularly for a 21-year-old switch-hitting catcher in the upper levels of the minors. He's the same age as the college catchers from last year's draft class, yet he'll likely be the Opening Day starter behind the dish, as he'll be eligible to net the White Sox a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick and he doesn't have anything left to prove at Triple-A. Quero's top competition for playing time, Korey Lee, has been worth negative fWAR in all three MLB seasons, but Kyle Teel, who was acquired this offseason from Boston in the Garrett Crochet deal, could join the big-league mix in the first half.

  • White Sox's Edgar Quero: Heading to minor-league camp

    The White Sox reassigned Quero to minor-league camp Monday. Quero went just 4-for-16 with a walk over nine Cactus League games, but even if he had obliterated pitching in the spring, the White Sox still might have had him open the season at Triple-A Charlotte to delay the start of his MLB service clock. Korey Lee appears to be the leading candidate to begin the season as Chicago's No. 1 backstop, but it may just be a matter of time before Quero or fellow catching prospect Kyle Teel supplants him. In the meantime, Quero and Teel are likely to begin the season at Triple-a Charlotte, where both should be able to pick up everyday at-bats while rotating between catcher and designated hitter.

Quero came into camp seemingly with a shot to emerge with a spot on the Opening Day roster, but his lack of usage suggests that's not going to happen. The 21-year-old has appeared in eight Cactus League games off the bench this spring, going 4-for-14 with a 2:1 K:BB. Quero appears likely to open the season alongside fellow catching prospect Kyle Teel at Triple-A Charlotte, where the duo would split playing time.

    The White Sox acquired Quero along with left-hander Ky Bush from the Angels on Wednesday in exchange for right-handers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. After putting up a .970 OPS in Single-A in 2022, Quero was pushed to Double-A to begin 2023 and is slashing .245/.385/.332 with 35 RBI across 317 plate appearances. The 20-year-old backstop will likely remain in Double-A as he transitions to his new organization, though he remains on his way to contribute in the majors within a few years.

    Quero has been a league-average hitter (100 wRC+) while slashing .240/.378/.322 with two home runs in 63 games for Double-A Rocket City. Quero has displayed stellar plate skills (16.5 BB%, 17.5 K%) as the third-youngest qualified hitter at Double-A, but he hasn't hit for much impact (0.82 ISO, 23.0 percent hard-contact rate). He was pushed very aggressively over High-A this season, so Quero's performance thus far should not be seen as a disappointment.
