Mariners' Prelander Berroa: Moving to relief
Berroa has transitioned to a relief role with Double-A Arkansas, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
The 23-year-old righty opened the year in the Double-A rotation, but after walking 19 batters and giving up 13 earned runs in 22.2 innings across five starts, Seattle will look to fast-track him as a reliever. Berroa, who is already on the 40-man roster, has a premium fastball/slider combination that could play up in a high-leverage role, assuming he can throw enough strikes.... See More ... See Less
Mariners' Prelander Berroa: Will be in Double-A rotation
Manager Scott Servais said Thursday that Berroa will be part of the rotation at Double-A Arkansas to begin the season, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Berroa impressed this spring to the point that Servais also said he expects the hard-throwing right-hander to help the major-league club in 2023. That could be as a reliever, but Berroa will continue to develop as a starter for the time being.... See More ... See Less
Mariners' Prelander Berroa: Optioned to Double-A
Berroa was optioned to Double-A Arkansas by the Mariners on Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
Berroa impressed during the spring camp, but the right-hander was never a real option to make the Mariners out of spring training. The right-hander will be a part of the Arkansas rotation, and he has a chance to be a part of the Seattle staff before the end of 2023, with 2024 a more likely ETA.... See More ... See Less
Mariners' Prelander Berroa: Shielded from Rule 5 draft
Berroa was added to Seattle's 40-man roster Tuesday.
The move means Berroa won't be available in the Rule 5 draft. While Berroa is now a step closer to his big-league debut, it's unlikely he pushes for a spot on the Opening Day roster. He's yet to reach the Triple-A level, and while he struck out 35.6 percent of opposing batters in nine starts for Double-A Arkansas, he also walked 16.8 percent, more than double the major-league average.... Mariners' Prelander Berroa: Dealt to Seattle
The Mariners acquired Berroa from the Giants on Wednesday in exchange for utility man Donovan Walton.
The 22-year-old Berroa has made four starts at High-A Eugene this season, posting an 0.68 ERA and 16:6 K:BB across 13.1 innings. He'll likely report to the Mariners' High-A affiliate in Everett.... See More ... See Less
