Player Outlook
The definition of a spare piece for Baltimore, Joseph Ortiz was shipped to Milwaukee along with DL Hall in exchange for Corbin Burnes in a contract year. The righty-hitting Ortiz is a plus defender who can play all over the infield, but he didn't project to provide enough offensive impact to play ahead of players like Jackson Holliday or Gunnar Henderson long term. Ortiz is a capable offensive player - he slashed .321/.378/.507 with nine home runs, 11 steals and a 17.7 percent strikeout rate in 88 games at Triple-A, good for a 121 wRC+. However, his .373 BABIP and the fact he turns 26 in July make that Triple-A production less impressive. Ortiz is a candidate to hit 10 homers and steal 10 bases without hurting your batting average, but he could hit at the bottom of the lineup against righties. He enters the season only eligible at second base, but Ortiz should play pretty regularly at third base early this season and he could be the shortstop of the future if Willy Adames leaves next offseason in free agency or gets traded during the season.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Not in Thursday's lineup

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game in Pittsburgh. He started the last four games at third base but will give way to Oliver Dunn for Thursday's tilt. Ortiz has been struggling at the plate lately, going 1-for-13 across his last seven contests, though he does have a 3:3 K:BB over that span.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Not in Friday's lineup

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cardinals. It's the second straight game on the bench for Ortiz, who started the previous three contests. Oliver Dunn will step in at third base for Milwaukee as the pair continue to split playing time at the hot corner.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Hits bench Wednesday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres. Ortiz had started at third base in each of the past three games while going 2-for-7 with a walk and a run scored, but he'll give way to Oliver Dunn for the series finale. The rookie has reached base at a .425 clip so far this season and should continue to remain ahead of Dunn on the depth chart with Dunn's production at the plate having slowed after a hot start to the season.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Sitting again Tuesday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins. Ortiz received one start each at second base and third base during the season-opening series versus the Mets, but he finds himself on the bench for the first game against the Twins. Oliver Dunn appears to have the early leg up for playing time as he makes his third straight start, two of which have come at the hot corner.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Sitting Saturday

Ortiz isn't in the Brewers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets. Ortiz started at second base Friday against left-handed starter Jose Quintana, but he will begin Saturday's contest in the dugout with righty Luis Severino on the mound for New York. The left-handed bats of Brice Turang and Oliver Dunn will cover second and third base, respectively.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: More starts with Mitchell out?

Ortiz could see an uptick in playing time as a result of Garrett Mitchell's (hand) injury, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. With Mitchell on the shelf for a while with a fractured hand, Brewers manager Pat Murphy mentioned Monday that Sal Frelick could go back to being a regular outfielder for a while. That would open up more playing time at third base, where Ortiz would seem to be the most likely to benefit. Andruw Monasterio is also a candidate for more at-bats at third if Frelick shifts to the outfield.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Included on Opening Day roster

Ortiz has been informed that he's made the Brewers' Opening Day roster, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It was expected but is nonetheless a thrill for Ortiz, who will be on a major-league Opening Day roster for the first time. The 25-year-old might not have a set starting position heading into the season but should play quite a bit all over the infield, with much of those starts likely to come at third base.

  • Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Acquired by Brewers

Ortiz was traded from the Orioles to the Brewers along with DL Hall and the 34th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft in exchange for Corbin Burnes on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. This should be a positive move for Ortiz, as he was stuck in a loaded Baltimore system that likely would have blocked him from a full-time role in the majors anytime soon. Now, he'll head to a team with some infield uncertainty -- particularly at third base -- and he could be the Opening Day starter at the hot corner with a decent showing in spring training. Ortiz's defensive value and contact skills are his carrying skills, though he isn't likely to offer much power.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Returns to action at Triple-A

Ortiz (oblique) is back in the lineup for Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, David Hall of The Virginia-Pilot reports. Ortiz will start at second base and bat sixth after missing three weeks of action because of a left oblique injury. The 25-year-old infielder has posted an impressive .321/.378/.507 slash line with nine homers and 11 steals in 88 games this season at the Triple-A level.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Managing oblique issue

Ortiz was removed from Triple-A Norfolk's lineup Tuesday due to left oblique tightness, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Ortiz's removal was labeled as precautionary, so he may be able to rejoin the Tides' lineup within the next few days. The 25-year-old had a .448 OPS over 15 games in his first taste of the big leagues earlier this season, but he's enjoyed a strong campaign at Norfolk with a .321/.378/.504 slash line in 88 contests.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Optioned to Norfolk

The Orioles optioned Ortiz to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Ortiz holds a .943 OPS in Triple-A, but he's been unable to get going in the majors this season. He'll look to right the ship again in the minors, and Jordan Westburg will come up from Norfolk in a corresponding move to replace Ortiz on the active roster.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Called up Wednesday

Ortiz was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. Ortiz will return to the big leagues after being sent down May 26. The shortstop has produced a .259 average with a double, four RBI and four runs scored over 27 at-bats over 11 games with Baltimore this season. Ortiz continues to rake at Triple-A, batting .328 with 18 extra-base hits over 128 at-bats in 32 games, and he'll look to stick this time around with the Orioles. In order to make room on the major-league roster, Mark Kolozsvary was optioned to Norfolk on Wednesday.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Shakes off illness

Ortiz (illness) has started in each of Triple-A Norfolk's last five games, going 8-for-22 with a home run, a triple, two doubles, one walk, three additional runs and three RBI over that span. Though the Orioles optioned Ortiz to Triple-A on May 26, he didn't make an appearance for Norfolk until nearly two weeks later while he battled an unspecified illness. Since rejoining the lineup June 8, Ortiz has resumed raking at the plate, so he seems to be back to 100 percent or close to it. The 24-year-old should remain the next man up for a call-up in the event the Orioles require another infielder at any point.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Optioned to Triple-A

Ortiz was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Ortiz will return to Norfolk after he went 5-for-19 with a double, three runs scored and six strikeouts over eight games following his call-up May 14. Ramon Urias (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday and will replace Ortiz on the major-league roster.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Gets start at third base

Ortiz is starting at third base and batting ninth for the Orioles on Friday against the Blue Jays, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. It will be the first time he's played the hot corner during his brief time in the majors. Ortiz is 4-for-18 at the plate so far with the Orioles.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Rejoins big club

The Orioles recalled Ortiz from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Sunday's game against the Pirates. In a corresponding move, Baltimore optioned reliever Nick Vespi to Triple-A to facilitate Ortiz's move to the big club for the second time this season. In his abbreviated stint with the Orioles in late April, Ortiz appeared in three games and went 2-for-8 with four RBI and a run. Though the 24-year-old is one of several intriguing Baltimore infield prospects, he may not be in line for anything more than short-side platoon work while all of Jorge Mateo, Gunnar Henderson and Adam Frazier are healthy. However, Ortiz will immediately slide into the starting nine at shortstop Sunday versus Pittsburgh.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Headed back to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Ortiz to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. After receiving his first MLB call-up Thursday, Ortiz proceeded to make three consecutive starts at second base and went a collective 2-for-8 with a run scored and four RBI. The right-handed-hitting infielder appears to have just been up with the Orioles while the team faced a stretch of three straight left-handed pitchers, so he'll head back to Triple-A with Baltimore bringing up an extra left-handed bat (Kyle Stowers) from Norfolk in a corresponding move.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Summoned to majors

Ortiz was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles on Thursday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Ortiz finished strong at Norfolk last season, and it has carried over into 2023 with a .359/.389/.500 slash line. The 24-year-old is a strong defender and has experience at all infield positions other than first base. While a good prospect, Ortiz might not play enough to provide much fantasy value in his first taste of the big leagues.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Cleared from concussion protocol

Ortiz (concussion) is playing in Florida and is expected to join Triple-A Norfolk for the affiliate's home opener Tuesday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. Ortiz sustained a concussion during a Grapefruit League game, which wiped out much of his chance to audition for a major-league roster spot. The 24-year-old should be expected to see significant playing time at Norfolk this season, and a strong showing could get him to the majors before the end of the campaign.

  • Orioles' Joey Ortiz: Enters concussion protocol

Oritz has been in the concussion protocol over the last few days after he was hit in the head by a batted ball, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports. Ortiz won't be able to return until he is not experiencing concussion symptoms. The shortstop prospect was added to the Orioles' 40-man roster in November after closing the season with a .320/.383/.534 slash line across 26 games with Triple-A Norfolk. He's likely to see much of his playing time at that level in 2023, though he could earn a midseason call-up to the majors if he plays well.
