Player Outlook
Logan Taylor Allen began the season with Triple-A Columbus, posting a 1.26 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in three starts, spanning 14.1 innings. Injuries in the Guardians rotation paved the way for Allen's debut in late April. He stayed in the big-league rotation for a dozen starts, recording a 3.47 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 63 strikeouts in 66 stanzas. However, he was in a rut and was demoted back to the Clippers. Allen returned in mid-July, registering a 4.14 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 56 punch outs across 63 innings. Allen's final 3.81 ERA seems impressive, but his 1.40 WHIP is more in line with the higher ERA estimators. Some of the elevated WHIP is from a high .324 BABIP, but he also logged an above average 8.9 percent walk rate. Allen needs to improve control since he averages only 91.4 mph on his four-seam fastball. Allen's splitter is his strikeout pitch. He also throws a cutter and slider. The Guardians are adept at fine tuning a repertoire to get the most out of their hurlers, so Allen is likely to grow into a mid-rotation innings eater. For now, he's best utilized in a streaming capacity.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Set for spring debut Sunday

Allen (shoulder) is set to pitch in a split squad game Sunday versus the Cubs, Quincy Wheeler of CoveringThe Corner.com reports. Allen had his 2023 season end in late September due to left shoulder inflammation, but he looks ready for his spring training debut. Allen had a 3.81 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside 119 strikeouts across 125.1 innings as a rookie last season.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Heads to injured list

The Guardians placed Allen on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left shoulder inflammation, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Allen's trip to the injured list will put an early end to his rookie campaign. He'll finish the season with a 3.81 ERA and 1.40 WHIP alongside 119 strikeouts across 125.1 innings. Michael Kelly was recalled from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Allows one run in no-decision

Allen did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over five innings against the Giants while striking out five. Allen got himself in a jam right out of the gate, surrendering back-to-back singles to open the first inning, which would eventually lead to one run coming across for San Francisco. However, the rookie left-hander allowed just two hits and two walks from the second inning on and was in line for his eighth win prior to the Giants' late comeback. Allen has now pitched five innings of one-run ball in back-to-back starts, lowering his season ERA to 3.60. On the downside, he's also issued multiple walks in each of those starts and in seven of his last nine outings overall.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Jolted by Jays

Allen (6-7) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on six hits and a walk over four innings as the Guardians were downed 8-3 by the Blue Jays. He struck out two. The rookie left-hander got staked to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a Jose Ramirez solo shot, but he immediately squandered it, and Cleveland never recovered. It's the first time Allen hasn't lasted at least five innings since late June, and despite Saturday's stumble he sports a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB through 45 innings since he rejoined the big-league rotation after the All-Star break. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, likely to come at home next weekend against the Rays.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Saddled with loss in quality start

Allen (6-6) took the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Tigers. He struck out five. Allen started off the game with a walk followed by a two-run homer by Spencer Torkelson but then settled in to allow no more damage. He finished his start by inducing 12 consecutive outs, but the Guardians could muster only one run, which left him on the hook for his sixth loss on the season. Allen's next scheduled start is tentatively penciled in for Saturday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Blanks Cincinnati for sixth win

Allen (6-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings against the Reds. He struck out seven. Allen's allowed just three runs over his last three starts (17 innings) after surrendering nine earned runs in his previous two outings. The rookie southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.33 with a 1.36 WHIP and 95:38 K:BB across 18 starts (97.1 innings) this season. Allen will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend at home against Detroit.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Walks four in win

Allen (5-4) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win against the White Sox. The only damage against Allen came in the third inning, a nice turnaround after he'd been tagged with nine runs and four homers in his previous two outings before Friday's quality start. However, the four walks tied his season high. The 24-year-old rookie dropped his season ERA to 3.65 with an 85:32 K:BB through 86.1 frames. Allen lines up to face the Blue Jays at home next week.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Burned in Chicago

Allen (4-4) took the loss Saturday, coughing up five runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings as the Guardians fell 7-2 to the White Sox. He struck out four. The rookie southpaw didn't get much run support, as Cleveland didn't even get on the board until after Allen had left the game, and while he kept things close through four innings he faded late. He's been tagged for four homers and 10 runs (nine earned) in his last two starts, both against less than fearsome opponents in the White Sox and Royals, and the addition of Noah Syndergaard (finger) and the eventual return of Cal Quantrill (shoulder) could have the clock ticking on Allen's time in the rotation. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, likely to be a rematch with the ChiSox next weekend back in Cleveland.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Coughs up five runs

Allen (4-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over seven innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Royals. Allen gave up just two runs through five frames before serving up a two-run shot to Salvador Perez in the sixth inning. It was the first homer allowed by Allen since June 15 and was the first time in his career that he was tagged with multiple home runs. The left-handed rookie fired 12.2 shutout innings over his previous three starts and still owns a solid 3.39 ERA after Monday's hiccup. Allen's next outing is projected to be against the White Sox in Chicago this weekend.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Excellent in return to Cleveland

Allen (4-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing just one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings in a 10-1 victory over Pittsburgh. He struck out eight. It was an excellent showing from Allen after he posted mixed results in his first MLB stint this year. The rookie left-hander lowered his ERA to a solid 3.21 with a 1.37 WHIP and 71:25 K:BB through his first 13 starts (67.1 innings). Allen should see an extended look in Cleveland's rotation while Shane Bieber (elbow) and Cal Quantrill (shoulder) are sidelined. He's currently lined up to face the Phillies this weekend in his next outing.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Recalled for Tuesday's start

Allen was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday. The left-hander will make his return to the Guardians' rotation Tuesday against the Pirates, taking the rotation spot vacated by Shane Bieber (elbow). Allen pitched well in his first go-round in the big leagues earlier this season, collecting a 3.47 ERA and 63:24 K:BB over 62.1 innings of work covering 12 starts. The southpaw went just three innings in each of his two starts after being sent back to Columbus, so he might not be ready for a full workload in Pittsburgh.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Rejoining rotation Tuesday

Allen is expected to be called up from Triple-A Columbus to start Tuesday against the Pirates, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. With Shane Bieber (forearm) likely joining Cal Quantrill and Triston McKenzie on the injured list, Allen should have a secure rotation spot for the foreseeable future. The young southpaw had a 4.76 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 22.2 innings over his five most recent MLB starts.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Hurls four scoreless innings

Allen did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two hits and three walks over four scoreless innings against the Athletics. He struck out five. The lefty was able to keep the Athletics off the scoreboard over four innings, but he needed 89 pitches to do so before being relieved by Nick Sandlin to open the fifth. This comes after the Allen lasted just three frames in his previous start, and he's now walked seven batters over his last seven innings of work. On a positive note, Allen was able to lower his ERA down to 3.68 on the season with the scoreless outing, and he'll look to bounce back at home next week when the Guardians take on the Royals.

  • Guardians' Logan Taylor Allen: Sleeper pitchers for Week 13 (June 19-25)

Consistency hasn't been Logan Allen's strong suit as a rookie, but he generally works deep into games and at times can resemble a big bat-misser. This week figures to be one of those times given that he's facing the Athletics' Triple-A-caliber lineup.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Escapes with no-decision Friday

Allen didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 10-9 extra-innings win over the Astros, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. Most of the damage came on a three-run shot by Jose Abreu in the first inning, but Allen still exited after 85 pitches (58 strikes) in line for his third loss before Cleveland set an modern era record by coming back from five separate deficits in the seventh inning or later. The rookie southpaw hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his first eight big-league starts, and he'll take a 3.31 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 51:15 K:BB through 51.2 innings into his next outing, likely to come next week in San Diego.

  • Guardians' Logan Taylor Allen: Possible waiver wire pickups

Logan Allen's latest start Saturday wasn't as good as the 10-strikeout effort that preceded it, but it was his third straight quality start and gives him seven straight with three earned runs or fewer to begin his big-league career, his ERA clocking in at 2.76. He's throwing consistent strikes, giving him just 2.6 BB/9, and is capable of generating whiffs with all three of his pitches, resulting in a 12.7 percent singing-strike rate that ranks ahead of Cristian Javier and Corbin Burnes. Another deceptive lefty who works in the low 90s, Allen seems to be settling in even as he gains exposure at the major-league level, and particularly given the Guardians' track record with pitchers, he deserves the benefit of the doubt now.

  • Guardians' Logan Allen: Records another quality start

Allen improved to 3-2 in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Twins, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings. Allen surrendered a first-inning solo homer to Jorge Polanco but bounced back to allow only one more run over his remaining five frames. The southpaw registered his third straight quality start after notching just one such effort over his first five big-league outings. Allen was initially called up to the majors due to injuries in Cleveland's rotation, but he may have cemented a permanent big-league spot given his strong 2.76 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 47:13 K:BB through 45.2 innings. Even with Triston McKenzie (shoulder) slated to make his season debut Sunday, the Guardians likely won't need to make any decisions about the rotation spots of Allen and fellow rookie Tanner Bibee for at least a few weeks with Cal Quantrill (shoulder) hitting the injured list Friday.

  • Guardians' Logan Taylor Allen: Possible waiver wire pickups

Logan Allen's latest start Monday was his best yet and offers the clearest hope that a high-end outcome is on the table. For the first time in five starts, he had more than a strikeout per inning, registering a career-high 10 in a career-high seven. His 19 swinging strikes were also a career high and were well distributed between his three most-used pitches: five on the fastball, five on the changeup, seven on the sweeper. He now has a 13.2 percent swinging-strike rate overall, which puts him in roughly the same range as Kevin Gausman and Cristian Javier even though he's not a particularly hard-thrower. His 11.8 K/9 across three minor-league seasons also speaks to his bat-missing capabilities. Hard contact had been an issue and could be again, but this outing should restore your faith in Allen's upside.

  • Guardians' Logan Taylor Allen: Sleeper pitchers for Week 10 (May 29-June 4)

The jury's still out on whether Logan Allen's stuff plays in the majors, with neither hits nor whiffs being in short supply so far, but you have to like that he gets two bites at the apple this week. The matchups aren't so favorable at first glance, but the Twins lineup in particular struggles against lefties.

  • Guardians' Logan Taylor Allen: Sleeper pitchers for Week 7 (May 8-14)

Allen's matchup against the Angels this week is no cake walk, but he handled the Red Sox lineup fine in his second start. He was also decent against the Twins over the weekend, so we should be able to put our trust in the deceptive left-hander, who thus far has the whiffs to back it up.
