Marcelo Mayer will be a big-league regular, but the closer he gets to the majors, the less he looks like a future fantasy star. As one of the slower shortstop prospects of note, Mayer won't be a major threat on the bases, so he has to move the needle at the plate. His walk rate has decreased at every full-season stop, dipping to 7.9 percent in 43 games at Double-A, and his 25.8 percent strikeout rate at Double-A was the worst mark of his career. Mayer reportedly dealt with a left shoulder impingement during his struggles at Double-A, and he eventually got shut down in early-August and received an injection in September. He has a career .280/.371/.494 slash line with 11 home runs in 60 games at High-A, so if the injury was the cause of his issues at Double-A, he could bounce back with similar production to what he showed at High-A in 2022 and 2023. A big reason Mayer ranks highly on real-life prospect rankings is his plus defense at shortstop, and while that figures to guarantee him playing time in the future, that's the extent of its importance for his fantasy value. He could debut late this year, but don't expect him to produce at an acceptable clip in fantasy until at least 2025.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Managing pec injury

Mayer was held out of Double-A Portland's lineup Tuesday and Wednesday due to pectoral soreness, Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com reports. The Red Sox are reportedly viewing the shortstop prospect's injury as a day-to-day concern, so the expectation is that he'll avoid a stint on Portland's injured list. Mayer missed time earlier this month while battling back discomfort but has performed well in the six games that he's played so far in July, slashing .292/.370/.500 with a 3:7 BB:K.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Areas for improvment

Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham recently said the organization is looking for Mayer to develop an increased walk rate, a narrowed strike zone and to see more left-handed pitching, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Abraham responded to the question of what Mayer has left to prove at Double-A Portland. The prospect has shown improvement in the first two areas, but Abraham acknowledged it's harder to evaluate his performance against left-handed pitching because there aren't as many in the minors. He also wants to see the shortstop increase his range defensively to the arm side and make those plays in the hole. "So while it might be smaller areas of improvement, I think those areas are going to allow him to be great, not just good," Abraham said. "Those things don't happen overnight." Mayer, who is batting .307/.371/.479 over 299 plate appearances, should see Triple-A Worcester in the second half.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Back in lineup Friday

Mayer (back) is starting at shortstop and batting second in Friday's game for Double-A New Hampshire, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer returns to the lineup Friday after missing four games due to back discomfort. The 21-year-old prospect is slashing .307/.371/.479 with 25 doubles, 13 stolen bases, seven home runs and 36 RBI over 299 plate appearances in Double-A this season.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Nursing back issue

Mayer was scratched from Monday's game against Double-A New Hampshire due to back tightness, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer felt tightness in his back during batting practice, however, the issue doesn't sound serious. Speier notes that Mayer is expected back in the starting nine for Tuesday's clash.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Raking in Double-A

Mayer has hit safely in the first seven games for Double-A Portland. He's slashing .357/.387/.500 with one home run, five RBI, two steals and seven runs scored. Mayer is healthy after a 2023 season ended early due to a shoulder injury that he said he was feeling long before he was shut down in August. It's reasonably expected that the highly regarded prospect will make his MLB debut in 2025, but this season may not be out of the question. Given the season-ending injury to Trevor Story (shoulder), it's not hard to envision Mayer getting the call later in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shoulder no longer an issue

Mayer said Wednesday that he's now "ready to go" after his 2023 season ended due to a left shoulder injury, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Mayer wound up missing the last month of the minor-league season due to left shoulder inflammation, an injury which he admitted Wednesday had been bothering him for a while before he was shut down. It could be at least partly to blame for why the 21-year-old slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Double-A Portland. Mayer is likely headed back to Portland to start 2024 as he looks to regain his prospect momentum.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shut down with shoulder injury

Mayer (shoulder) has been shut down for the remainder of the season at Double-A Portland, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Mayer has missed the last month of action with left shoulder inflammation. Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham said of Mayer on Wednesday that the team is "very pleased with the progress he has made so far," but the goal at this point is the "strengthening of his shoulder, so he can have a full, normal offseason." Mayer batted .290/.366/.524 for High-A Greenville but slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Portland. It was an aggressive assignment given that he won't turn 21 until December. The young shortstop is one of the organization's top prospects.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Heading to Double-A

Mayer was promoted to Double-A Portland on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Mayer was on a tear at High-A Greenville to begin the 2023 campaign, slashing .291/.365/.532 with seven home runs, 33 RBI, 23 runs and four steals over 34 games. Boston's top prospect will now have a chance to prove himself at the Double-A level.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Gets timing down

Mayer went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's game for High-A Greenville. Mayer had scuffled out of the gate with just two hits over his first 20 at-bats before breaking out Saturday. He told Brendan Samson of MLB.com that he'd been late on swings early in the season but got his timing down Saturday. "I just made sure today that I got my foot down early, started a little earlier and got a good pitch to hit and I was able to do that today," Mayer said. The 20-year-old shortstop prospect slashed .280/.399/.489 with 13 home runs and 17 steals over 91 combined games between Single-A Salem and Greenville in 2022.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Headed to High-A

Red Sox farm director Brian Abraham confirmed Monday that Mayer has been promoted from Single-A Salem to High-A Greenville, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Boston will be moving two of its top selections from the 2020 and 2021 draft classes to Greenville, as power-hitting third baseman Blaze Jordan will also be making the jump from Salem. Mayer, a 19-year-old shortstop who was the No. 4 overall selection in 2021, received the promotion after slashing .286/.406/.504 with nine home runs and 16 stolen bases to go with a 16.8 percent walk rate across 308 plate appearances for Salem.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Placed on injured list

Mayer (wrist) was placed on the 7-day minor-league injured list Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer dealt with a wrist injury for several weeks in late April and early May, but he recently returned to the field and went 6-for-18 with four doubles, three RBI and a stolen base. The 19-year-old's injury hasn't increased in severity, but he'll land on the IL and undergo further testing since the issue hasn't gone away. It's not yet clear when Mayer will be able to return to game action.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Returns with three doubles

Mayer (wrist) started at shortstop and went 3-for-6 with three doubles and two RBI on Sunday in Single-A Salem's 8-7 loss to Delmarva. Mayer missed approximately two-and-a-half weeks when his sore right wrist first cropped up in late April, but his latest aggravation of the injury didn't cause nearly as long of an absence. He was out of the lineup for four days before returning to action Sunday and providing a season-high three extra-base hits. Assuming he experienced no setbacks coming out of Sunday's contest, Mayer should be capable of handling an everyday role at Salem moving forward.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Gets brief spring taste of majors

Mayer picked up five plate appearances for the Red Sox this spring, going 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts. He's 19 and has never played above rookie ball, so no one expected Mayer to put up numbers in spring training. Last year's No. 4 overall draft pick, he's expected to open 2022 in Low-A, and it'll be worth watching to see whether he can maintain last season's impressive walk rate (14 percent) while getting to his power more often in game action.

Mayer went 2-for-6 with a home run, four RBI and an additional run scored for the Florida Complex League Red Sox on Saturday. Mayer, Boston's first-round pick in the 2021 draft, launched his first professional home run, a three-run job. The shortstop is batting .214/.313/.357 with one home run, one double, five RBI and five runs over seven games in the FCL.

Mayer is Boston's first-round pick (third overall) in the 2021 draft. The left-handed hitting shortstop belted 14 home runs and batted .392 (38-for-97) in 34 games during his final year with Eastlake High School in California.
