Drew Romo is an impatient hitter, but he still has a chance to be a viable option in two-catcher or NL-only leagues at some point this season. He slashed .297/.339/.499 with 14 home runs, three steals, a 17.8 percent strikeout rate and a 4.3 percent walk rate in 85 games at Triple-A, but his strikeout rate almost doubled (34 percent) in 53 plate appearances in the big leagues to close the year. Romo's combination of power (.201 ISO) and contact (80.8 Contact%) as a 22-year-old catcher at Triple-A was impressive, and his blocking, framing and pop time were all at least slightly above average per Baseball Savant in his brief cup of coffee. Colorado invested significantly in Romo, drafting him 35th overall in 2020 with a signing bonus north of $2 million, and he doesn't have stiff competition on the depth chart at the beginning of the offseason.

    The Rockies optioned Romo to Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday. Romo's demotion likely solidifies Jacob Stallings and Hunter Goodman as the Rockies' catching tandem heading into Opening Day. The 23-year-old Romo already appears major-league ready from a defensive standpoint, but the Rockies would presumably like to see him show more improvement with his plate skills before giving him an extended run in the big leagues as their No. 1 catcher. Romo hit .297 with 14 home runs while striking out in just 17.8 percent of his 370 plate appearances at Albuquerque last season, but he languished upon getting his first big-league call-up in mid-August. Over 53 plate appearances with the Rockies, Romo hit .176 with a 3.8 percent walk rate and a 34 percent strikeout rate.

    Romo is likely to begin the 2025 season at Triple-A Albuquerque, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Manager Bud Black has praised Romo this spring for his improvement in blocking skills and in managing a game. However, Saunders suggests that the Rockies will opt to keep Hunter Goodman on the Opening Day roster thanks to his superior skills as a hitter. Even if Romo begins the season in the minors, there's a strong chance he'll be in Colorado at some point in 2025.
