Bieber gave up five runs in his last start Sunday against the Phillies, but he was much better in Friday's game against an AL East rival. He opened up his start by striking out two of the first three batters he faced and kept the Yankees off the board through five innings, with his lone blemish coming on a leadoff home run by Trent Grisham in the sixth. It was Bieber's third quality start of the season, and he'll take a 4.99 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 48.2 innings into his next start, which is lined up for next week on the road against the Rays.

Bieber allowed plenty of traffic on the bases but was ultimately able to limit the damage to just one run en route to picking up the win. Monday was a much better showing than the right-hander's previous start, when he surrendered four runs fueled by six walks without escaping the first inning Tuesday against the Nationals. The 31-year-old has mostly struggled since making his season debut June 23, posting a 5.11 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 28:20 K:BB across 37 innings (eight starts). Bieber's next outing is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the Phillies.

Bieber failed to get out of the first inning, marking the shortest start of his career. The 31-year-old also allowed six walks, which is a new career high. On the season, the right-hander holds a 5.74 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 22:18 K:BB in 31.1 innings. With Bieber being a potential trade candidate before Monday's trade deadline, his career-worst start may diminish his overall value to potential trade suitors.

Outside of the third, the veteran right-hander retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced. He has now recorded a win in consecutive starts after failing to do so in his first four outings of the campaign. Through six starts since returning from the injured list, Bieber owns a 4.70 ERA with a 22:12 K:BB across 30.2 innings. He's lined up to make his next start against the Nationals.

Bieber did better in this outing than his last one, but it was still an inefficient performance. He threw 54 of 97 pitches for strikes and wasn't able to stay in the game long enough to earn his first win. He's pitched to a 7.64 ERA and 13:10 K:BB across 17.2 innings over his four starts in the majors this season, and he's also allowed seven home runs. If Bieber continues to get hit hard, that will limit his effectiveness.

Bieber is set to make his 2026 debut Tuesday with a start at home against the Astros. The right-hander got a late start to the season as he worked his way back from an elbow issue that had nagged at him since last season. Bieber had an up-and-down showing on his rehab assignment, posting a 6.88 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB across 17 innings. He went five innings in each of his last two rehab starts and reached 80 pitches in his final outing, so Bieber should be ready to handle around 90 pitches versus Houston.
