The Tigers released Sands on Tuesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The 27-year-old was designated for assignment by the Tigers in December and has now been fully let go by the organization. Sands played in 89 games at Triple-A Toledo last season and had a .225/.318/.353 slash line.

  • Tigers' Donny Sands: Outrighted to Toledo

Sands cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Toledo. Sands spent the vast majority of 2023 at Triple-A Toledo, and he'll now do so without the benefit of a 40-man roster spot. Sands was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. The 26-year-old catcher will make his first appearance in the big leagues as rosters expand to 28 players in September. • Phillies' Donny Sands: Sent to Triple-A

The Phillies optioned Sands to minor-league camp Thursday. Philadelphia will have two extra active roster spots available through May 1 due to the compressed spring training, but Sands won't stick around as the team's No. 3 catcher behind J.T. Realmuto and Garrett Stubbs. Rather than Sands, Rafael Marchan looks to be the next man up at catcher if something should happen to the top two options on the organizational depth chart.
