Allen signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Allen's 2023 season was spent at Triple-A Jacksonville in the Marlins organization, where he posted an .802 OPS with 23 homers in 91 games. The 30-year-old has seen spot action in the majors over parts of four seasons, collecting a .540 OPS across 127 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Austin Allen: Sent to minor-league camp
The Marlins reassigned Allen to minor-league camp Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Allen joined the Marlins as a non-roster invitee in spring training and appeared in 12 games, batting .217 with one homer, five RBI and two runs scored over 23 at-bats. The 29-year-old has played in 23 total major-league contests in the last three seasons and seems unlikely to make much of an impact with the Marlins in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Austin Allen: Signs with Miami
Allen signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Thursday. Allen appeared in four big-league games early in 2022 for Oakland but spent the rest of the campaign at Triple-A, and he was traded to the Cardinals in August. He had a 287/.365/.472 slash line with seven home runs and 40 RBI in 55 games between the two organizations.... See More ... See Less -
Cardinals' Austin Allen: Traded to Cardinals
Allen was traded from Oakland to St. Louis on Tuesday in exchange for Carlos Guarate. Allen owns a career .195/.252/.288 slash line in 57 career major-league games, five of which came this year. He'll likely serve as organizational depth for his new team.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Remains in organization
Allen cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Allen was designated for assignment by the A's earlier this week and will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. He appeared in five big-league games this season and went 1-for-14 with a walk, a run and nine strikeouts.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Designated for assignment
Allen was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Monday. Allen spent time on the COVID-19 injured list in mid-April, but he saw sporadic playing time when healthy. Over five games, the 28-year-old went just 1-for-14 with a run, a walk and nine strikeouts. He'll now lose his spot on the 40-man roster, and Christian Bethancourt is in line to serve as the No. 2 catcher while Stephen Vogt (knee) is on the IL.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Reinstated from COVID-19 IL
Allen (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Allen spent just under a week away from the team, but he'll be available off the bench in Thursday's series finale against Baltimore. The 28-year-old has appeared in two games this year and has gone 1-for-6 with a run, a walk and four strikeouts.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Lands on COVID-19 IL
Allen was placed on the COVID-19 injured list for an undisclosed reason Monday. Allen appears to be unvaccinated since he was placed on the restricted list prior to the Athletics' weekend series in Toronto. While it's not clear whether he's tested positive for COVID-19, he'll be forced to spend some time away from the team to begin the club's home series against the Orioles.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Placed on restricted list
Allen (undisclosed) was placed on the restricted list ahead of Friday's series opener at Toronto, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It appears Allen is unvaccinated and unable to travel to Canada, so he, along with relievers A.J. Puk and Kirby Snead, will move to the restricted list for this weekend. Christian Bethancourt was added to the major-league roster for catching depth in Toronto behind Sean Murphy and Stephen Vogt.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Gets turn behind dish
Allen will start at catcher and bat eighth in Thursday's game against the Rays, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Top backstop Sean Murphy is getting a day off behind the plate and is serving as Oakland's designated hitter in the series finale, allowing Allen to pick up his second start of the season at catcher. In his lone prior appearance in Sunday's win over the Phillies, Allen went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Returns to lineup
Allen (illness) will bat third and start behind the plate Friday against the White Sox, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Allen was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to illness, but he's ready to go again two days later. The minor setback shouldn't impact his readiness for Opening Day, though there's no guarantee he breaks camp with the team after Stephen Vogt was signed as competition for the backup catcher spot in late March.... Athletics' Austin Allen: Falls ill Wednesday
Allen was scratched from the lineup Wednesday for the Athletics' Cactus League game against the Reds due to an illness, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Allen can be viewed as day-to-day, but the illness an untimely development as he looks to win a spot on the Athletics' Opening Day roster as the No. 2 catcher behind Sean Murphy. Christian Bethancourt was added to Wednesday's lineup as a replacement for Allen behind the dish.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Sent back to Las Vegas
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Allen joined the A's when rosters expanded Sept. 1, and logged one hit while making two pinch-hit appearances last week. He'll return to Las Vegas with Seth Brown (illness) being activated from the COVID-19 IL but figures to be a candidate to return should Oakland suffer an injury to a position player.... See More ... Athletics' Austin Allen: Joins A's for stretch run
The Athletics recalled Allen from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Allen will serve as the Athletics' No. 3 catcher during the final month of the season, providing depth behind Sean Murphy and Yan Gomes. The 27-year-old wowed with a .952 OPS at Triple-A while striking out in only 18.3 percent of his plate appearances in 71 games, but he's unlikely to pick up more than a handful of starts in September while the Athletics look to lock down a playoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Optioned to Triple-A
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Allen appeared in two games during his time on the major-league roster and went 1-for-6 with a solo home run and two strikeouts. Aramis Garcia (illness) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Joins big-league club
Allen was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The 27-year-old was unable to earn the backup catching job in spring training, but he'll join the Athletics on Tuesday with Aramis Garcia heading to the injured list. Allen should work as the secondary catcher behind starter Sean Murphy until Garcia is healthy.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Optioned to Triple-A
Allen was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday. Allen was competing for the backup catcher job with the Athletics during spring training and hit .261 with one home run, two runs, two RBI and seven strikeouts over 12 Cactus League games. Athletics' Austin Allen: OK after taking bat to helmet
Allen remained in the game in Saturday's loss to the Angels after getting hit in the right side of the head by Tommy La Stella's bat in the second inning, the Associated Press reports. The backup catcher's helmet flew off upon impact in what was a scary moment for both Allen and La Stella. After getting checked out by manager Bob Melvin and athletic trainer Nick Paparesta, Allen was able to remain in the game and finished 1-for-3 with a strikeout.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Austin Allen: Ejected from Sunday's game
Allen went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before being ejected from Sunday's game against the Astros. After the dust settled on a benches-clearing scuffle in the seventh inning, Allen and Ramon Laureano were ejected. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle noted that Allen "looked like he was mixing it up pretty good in a second scrum." Manager Bob Melvin told Brian McTaggart and Martin Gallegos of MLB.com that he expects some suspensions given the violation of protocols.... See More ... See Less
