Something clicked for Will Benson during his five-week stint in the minors in April and May. A first-round pick in 2016, he made changes to cut down on his whiffs in 2022, but it wasn't enough to convince Cleveland as the Guardians traded traded him across state to Cincinnati just before spring training. While those aforementioned changes did not pay immediate dividends at the major-league level, Benson put everything together with Triple-A Louisville and would go on to be one of the Reds' best hitters over the final four months of the season. From May 30 on, Benson hit .296/.389/.542 with 34 extra-base hits -- including eight triples -- to go along with 19 steals in 22 attempts. It was a remarkable turnaround, but Benson is a strict platoon player for manager David Bell and the stickiness of his plate-skill improvements is still in question. The 25-year-old had over 300 plate appearances following his return to the majors, but that's not enough of a sample to draw any definitive conclusions.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Delivers against lefty

Benson went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 7-4 win over Philadelphia. Benson put the Reds on the board with a solo home run in the third inning off righty Spencer Turnbull, but his biggest hit came three innings later. He delivered the go-ahead run with two outs off lefty Matt Strahm. The lefty-hitting Benson was a platoon player in 2023 but is getting more opportunities against southpaws this season. It's not always pretty -- 4-for-22 off them thus far -- but manager David Bell let him stay in the game at a high-leverage moment. Benson, who snapped a career-worst 0-for-18 skid in Tuesday's win over the Phillies, is 3-for-9 in the series heading into the finale Thursday afternoon.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Exits starting nine

Benson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. With left-hander Ranger Suarez on the mound for the Phillies, Reds manager David Bell will give the lefty-hitting Benson a day off and stock up on some extra right-handed bats. Bubba Thompson will pick up a start in the outfield in Benson's stead.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Takes turn at leadoff

Benson batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Angels. Benson took over the leadoff duties due to Jonathan India (illness) being unavailable. A season that started promising in March has gone south quickly. His average dropped to .186 following Sunday's 0-fer, and Benson's gone 16 at-bats without a hit.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Sitting versus southpaw

Benson is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels. With the Angels sending left-hander Patrick Sandoval to the mound Saturday, Bubba Thompson will start in right field and bat ninth. Benson has started in each of the Reds' last five games, going 3-for-17 with five walks and three stolen bases over that span.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Heads to bench Sunday

Benson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. Benson started the first eight games of the season but will take a seat Sunday while mired in a 2-for-19 slump. Bubba Thompson will start in center field and bat ninth in the series finale versus New York.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Swipes bag in win

Benson started in right field and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 6-3 extra-inning win over the Phillies. Benson stole his first base of the season after logging 19 thefts in 2023. Monday's start was notable in that the lefty-hitting Benson has been in the lineup for both games when the Reds have faced a southpaw. He batted .146 with a .400 OPS over 44 plate appearances against left-handers in 2023, but it appears the Reds are trying to make him an everyday player in 2024. Other than Monday's walk, Benson struck out three times and is 1-for-4 against left-handers thus far. He's fanned seven times overall in 17 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Will Benson: In lineup versus left-hander

Benson will start in right field and bat ninth in Monday's game versus the Phillies. The Reds have faced two lefties in the early going and Benson has been the only left-handed batter in the lineup for both of those games. He's been down in the No. 9 spot for both of those tilts, but it's a positive sign that Cincinnati is viewing him as an everyday player, at least while the club contends with some injuries.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Belts game-tying homer

Benson went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI in Sunday's victory over the Nationals. Benson took Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan deep in the ninth inning with a two-run homer to tie the game. He also notched his third double of the season earlier in the game. Benson has started hot out of the gate for the Reds, garnering three straight starts and going 5-for-12 with four extra-base hits. He should maintain a regular lineup spot so long as TJ Friedl (wrist) is out.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Starts in center field

Benson started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Saturday's spring game against Colorado. Benson's served as the starting center fielder in four of his last six Cactus League outings. The lefty swinger and right-handed batting Stuart Fairchild have rotated there since TJ Friedl sustained a broken wrist. Those two are expected to share center field while Friedl recovers, but it's uncertain if it will be a strict platoon.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Could see more center field action

With TJ Friedl out with a fractured wrist, Benson could get more starts in center field, along with Stuart Fairchild, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Benson and teammate Jake Fraley both should get more playing time not only because of Friedl's injury, but also because of Noelvi Marte's suspension, which presumably frees the DH spot up for either one of them or Jonathan India. Friedl will be sidelined for a minimum of 3-to-4 weeks, after which his wrist will be re-evaluated.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Looking to bat against lefties

Benson went 1-for-3 with an RBI-double in Sunday's spring game against the Royals. Benson collected his first hit off a left-hander this spring, which has been an area of focus for the lefty-swinging outfielder, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "I requested that when I first showed up at spring training," Benson said. "If I'm going to be the best player that I know I can possibly be, I need to be playing regardless of who is on that mound." During a strong 2023 season, Benson was often rested against southpaws. In 44 plate appearances, he batted .146 with 14 strikeouts.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Three hits, steal in loss

Benson went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one run scored in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals. Benson went 7-for-16 with four steals across his last five games of the season. The outfielder was able to play semi-regularly in 2023, holding down a strong-side platoon role. He posted a .275/.365/.498 slash line with 11 home runs, 19 steals, 31 RBI, 51 runs scored, 15 doubles and eight triples across 329 plate appearances in his first year with the Reds.

  • Reds' Will Benson: On bench versus lefty

Benson is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Tigers. Benson went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double in Sunday's series finale against the Cardinals, but he'll ride the pine in Tuesday's series opener at Detroit with left-hander Joey Wentz on the bump. Benson, 25, has batted just .152/.222/.212 in 36 plate appearances versus lefties this year.

Benson went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Sunday's win over the Cardinals. Benson recorded his second three-hit effort over his last four games and reached the double-digit home run mark with a solo blast in the third. His recent surge at the plate has him at nine hits in 10 games this month, although he's started just six of those 10 games, as he continues to sit against lefties. The 25-year-old has put together a nice season during his first year in Cincinnati, slashing .273/.369/.502 with 10 homers, 27 RBI, 45 runs and a 37:89 BB:K in 287 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Will Benson: On bench Friday

Benson is absent from the lineup Friday versus the Cardinals. Benson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and a stolen base in Wednesday's series finale against the Mariners, but the Reds will go righty-heavy Friday as they match up against Cardinals lefty Drew Rom. Benson has batted .156/.229/.219 in 35 plate appearances this year versus southpaws.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Not starting Saturday

Benson isn't in the Reds' lineup Saturday against the Cubs. Benson is just 2-for-19 across his last seven games, so he'll get a day off to regroup Saturday. Nick Martini, TJ Friedl and Hunter Renfroe will make up Cincinnati's outfield while Benson rests.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Sitting out first game

Benson is not in the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs. Southpaw Jordan Wicks is on the hill for the Cubs, so Benson will take a seat. Newcomer Hunter Renfroe is in right field and Stuart Fairchild is in left field for the Reds.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Gets day off versus lefty

Benson is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Guardians. Benson will join fellow lefty hitter Joey Votto on the bench Tuesday while the Guardians bring southpaw Logan Allen to the hill. Though he's coming off a productive weekend in Pittsburgh in which he went 5-for-9 with two walks, four runs and a stolen base, Benson will cede his spot in the outfield to TJ Hopkins in the series opener with Cleveland.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Nursing back stiffness

Benson is not in the Reds' lineup Wednesday due to back stiffness, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It explains why he's not playing for a second straight day and this time against a right-hander. Benson is expected to be fine, so there would seem to be a good chance he's ready to roll for the weekend series in Pittsburgh following Thursday's off day.
