  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Optioned to Iowa

Cuas was optioned to Triple-Iowa on Thursday. Cuas was projected to serve in a prominent role in the Cubs' bullpen, but he surrendered at least one earned run in four of his first five appearances to begin the campaign. He'll look to get on track at Iowa and has a good chance to return to the majors fairly quickly.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Sharp in 2024 debut

Cuas pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts in Saturday's loss to the Rangers. Starter Kyle Hendricks was tagged for five runs while reliever Ben Brown gave up six, but Cuas was effective against a tough Texas lineup. The righty struck out 71 batters across 65.1 innings last season, and if he can continue to miss bats at a high rate, he may see more high-leverage work as the year goes on.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Allows first spring run

Cuas allowed a run on three hits in Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Brewers, pushing his spring ERA to 1.50. Cuas came into the game having logged five straight scoreless appearances this spring, and he's struck out eight batters in six innings overall. The righty is trying to build on an effective 2023 campaign, when he posted a 3.99 ERA and struck out 71 across 65.1 total innings with the Cubs and Royals. Cuas will likely work in middle relief, however, which limits his fantasy appeal.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Earns first save Saturday

Cuas picked up the save Saturday against Colorado. He issued one walk and notched one strikeout over a scoreless ninth inning. The 29-year-old Cuas was called upon to preserve Chicago's three-run, ninth-inning lead and successfully earned his first save of the campaign by retiring three of the four batters he faced on 18 pitches. The righty was simply filling in and is not expected to receive regular save opportunities in the final week of the regular season with Adbert Alzolay (forearm) soon expected back from the injured list.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Pitches ninth inning Monday

Cuas pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Monday's 5-0 win over the Giants. He struck out one. It wasn't a save situation for Cuas, but the game wasn't entirely out of reach either, and it was a matchup against a team jockeying with the Cubs for a playoff spot. Cuas looked comfortable closing out the important win, and he's been solid this season with a 3.56 ERA and 61 strikeouts across 55.2 innings of relief. The 29-year-old isn't in the mix for saves, though he's become a trusted option for Chicago down the stretch, which could lead to some holds or wins occasionally.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Back from bereavement list

The Cubs reinstated Cuas from the bereavement list ahead of his start Friday in the second game of a doubleheader against Cincinnati, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. After three games away from the team, Cuas will return to the Cubs' roster. The 29-year-old righty holds a 3.69 ERA through 53.2 innings this season and will likely only remain on the mound for an inning or two as Chicago rolls with a bullpen game. Anthony Kay was optioned to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Goes on bereavement leave

The Cubs placed Cuas on the bereavement list Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Cuas will likely miss at least the final two games of the Cubs' current three-game series versus the Brewers. Anthony Kay has been called up from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding roster move.

  • Cubs' Jose Cuas: Headed to Windy City

The Royals traded Cuas to the Cubs on Monday in exchange for Nelson Velazquez. Cuas hasn't been particularly reliable out of the bullpen for the Royals this season with a 4.54 ERA and 1.61 WHIP across 41.2 innings. Nonetheless, he'll add depth to a Cubs bullpen that has already dealt with a handful of injuries throughout the year.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Opener assignment Thursday

Cuas will serve as the Royals' opener Thursday against the Rays, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. It will be his first career start, though Cuas is probably only going to work the first inning before giving way to a parade of other Kansas City relievers. Austin Cox could be the bulk man, per Rogers, and Brooks Kriske should also be available to cover a frame or two. Cuas, 28, carries a 4.15 ERA and 1.45 WHIP through 32 appearances this year.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Called up to big leagues

The Royals recalled Cuas from Triple-A Omaha on Monday. Cuas was optioned to Triple-A less than a week ago, but he'll be eligible to rejoin the Royals after the team placed Ryan Yarbrough (head) on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. While he's up with Kansas City, Cuas will likely operate as a low-leverage relief arm.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Sent to Triple-A

Cuas was optioned Wednesday to Triple-A Omaha. Austin Cox will join the Royals' bullpen in a corresponding 26-man roster move. Cuas, 28, allowed two earned runs over 1.1 innings of relief in Tuesday's loss to the Orioles, raising his season ERA to 5.65 over 14.1 total frames.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Snags first win

Cuas (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two over one inning but earned the win Saturday over the Angels. Cuas surrendered a two-run home run to Matt Thaiss in the eighth inning that put the Royals behind 8-6. They rallied for five runs in the ninth, and that allowed Cuas to back into the win. The right-hander has been far from steady so far -- he's been scored on in six of his nine outings while yielding three home runs in 9.1 innings. He has a 6.75 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB. With Scott Barlow and Aroldis Chapman seeing the bulk of the high-leverage work, Cuas is likely to remain a middle reliever.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Optioned to Omaha

Cuas was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. Cuas picked up the win in his last appearance and has posted a 2.57 ERA in September, but his 1.86 WHIP this month suggests he got a bit lucky, and the Royals decided to remove him from the roster to open up a spot for fellow reliever Taylor Clarke.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Snags win Sunday

Cuas (4-2) earned the win Sunday over the Mariners. He allowed two runs on two hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. Cuas was tasked with finishing off the fifth inning, and he also gave up a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. The Royals' offense then exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the right-hander in line for the win. Prior to Sunday, Cuas had logged eight scoreless innings over his last 12 appearances. He now has a 3.58 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 34:24 K:BB while adding a save and 11 holds through 37.2 innings this year.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Collects third win

Cuas (3-2) walked one and struck out two in 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday over the White Sox. Cuas completed the fifth inning after Brady Singer allowed five straight hits, including a three-run home run to Gavin Sheets in the middle. Cuas inherited runners on the corners with two outs and got Josh Harrison on a groundout before handling the sixth inning without trouble. The righty reliever owns a shaky 5.63 ERA through eight innings in August, picking up a save, two holds and a 1-1 record in 10 appearances. For the season, he's been a bit better with a 3.82 ERA, though his 1.63 WHIP and 26:19 K:BB through 30.2 innings are mostly uninspiring. With both Taylor Clarke (oblique) and Josh Staumont (biceps) out, Cuas and Dylan Coleman have served as high-leverage options preceding closer Scott Barlow.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Notches first save

Cuas earned the save in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox by not allowing a baserunner and recording a strikeout over two-thirds of an inning. He also pitched in Game 2 and gave up a run on one hit with one strikeout and one walk in one inning. Closer Scott Barlow entered during the eighth inning of the matinee to get out of a jam with two runners on and one out, and Cuas was called upon for the save after Dylan Coleman gave up a run while recording only one out. Cuas was promoted from Triple-A Omaha ahead of Tuesday's twin bill and has a 3.33 ERA and eight holds in 29 outings this year, and he shouldn't be expected to be a factor for saves going forward.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Jettisoned to Triple-A

Cuas was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. The Royals needed to open up a roster spot for Luke Weaver, and Cuas will be the pitcher who heads to the minors in the corresponding move. He has posted a 3.18 ERA over 22.2 big-league innings this season, so chances are he will rejoin the big club at some point before the campaign comes to a close.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Takes first loss

Cuas (2-1) allowed four runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Tigers. Cuas was responsible for the Tigers' four-run rally in the seventh inning, though a trio of errors from his teammates didn't help the cause. July's taken a shaky turn for Cuas, who has surrendered six runs (three earned) in his last 5.2 innings across eight appearances. He'd allowed only three earned runs in his first full month in the majors. The right-hander has pitched to a 3.06 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 13:11 K:BB across 17.2 innings overall, and while he's added five holds, the lingering control issues make him difficult to trust.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Collects second win

Cuas (2-0) retired the only batter he faced Sunday versus the Tigers, picking up the win. Starter Brady Singer cruised through four innings but got into trouble in the fifth. Cuas then entered the game and retired Javier Baez on a lineout to escape a bases-loaded situation unscathed. The Royals didn't relinquish the lead, allowing Cuas to snag his second win of the year. He's put together a 3.2-inning scoreless streak over his last five outings, and he's still yet to give up more than a run in any appearance. The 28-year-old owns a 1.98 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB with four holds in 13.2 innings across 17 appearances.

  • Royals' Jose Cuas: Effective since call-up

Cuas has posted a 1.23 ERA in 7.1 innings since his contract was selected from Triple-A Omaha on May 31. While he's yet to record a decision, a save or a hold, Cuas has held his own in a low-leverage role. The right-hander has a 6:3 K:BB and 0.95 WHIP. Considering the Royals' bullpen ERA as a team is 4.86 (third-worst in the majors), Cuas' success has to be considered a positive. If he can keep it going, he could push for some high-leverage chances eventually.
