Player Outlook
Austin Slater was limited to just 90 plate appearances in the first half last season due to a pair of hamstring injuries. He later had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow just after the season to remove a bone spur which apparently had been an issue for a couple years. In between the injuries and surgery Slater was his usual productive self against left-handed pitching, slashing .288/.361/.439 with four homers in 147 plate appearances. He started just seven games versus righties and collected a .619 OPS. Slater's role as short-side platoon specialist is very defined at this point and it's unlikely to change under new manager Bob Melvin. The 31-year-old is good enough at the role to have some deep-league fantasy value, but he's simply not going to play enough to be useful in shallower leagues.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Starts in right field in exhibition

Slater (elbow) will start in right field and bat second Monday in the Giants' exhibition versus the Athletics. After he was limited in the early stages of spring training while completing his recovery from the right elbow surgery he underwent Oct. 11, Slater made his spring debut Feb. 24, but he didn't return to the lineup until March 9 after experiencing a minor setback in his recovery. Manager Bob Melvin noted Friday that Slater recently experienced more soreness in his surgically repaired elbow, but the 31-year-old outfielder has since seemingly quelled some of the concern about his availability for Opening Day. He returned to action for Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks and went 0-for-3 while serving as a backup designated hitter, then made a start at DH in a minor-league game Sunday. Slater's inclusion in the lineup in the outfield Monday implies that the elbow issue is no longer hindering him on defense or at the plate, so if he can come out of the game without any setbacks, he should be in good position to make the Opening Day roster. The right-handed-hitting Slater is likely to fill the short side of a platoon in the corner outfield with either Michael Conforto or Mike Yastrzemski during the upcoming season.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Suffers setback with elbow

Giants manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Slater had "a little setback" with his right elbow and might not make the Opening Day roster, Brian Murphy of KNBR 680 reports. Slater had offseason surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow. While he didn't have any restrictions during spring training, he evidently felt something in the elbow recently that has the Giants hitting the pause button. With Slater looking iffy for the Opening Day roster, it could clear a spot for Luis Matos.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Cleared for Cactus League play

Slater (elbow) said Thursday that he has the "all clear" to play in spring training games, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Slater has been throwing from 150 feet, and he participated in cutoff and relay drills Thursday for the first time since undergoing surgery on his right elbow in October. It's unclear whether the Giants will use Slater in the field right away as Cactus League games begin or if they will ease him in as a DH, but he should be ready to handle fielding duties by Opening Day.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Nearing end of rehab

Slater (elbow) reported to spring training with no restrictions as a hitter, though he'll still need to finish his throwing program before being cleared to play in Cactus League games, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Slater is working his way back from offseason surgery to remove a bone spur in his right elbow and is behind the Giants' other outfielders, though his availability for Opening Day doesn't look to be in jeopardy at this stage. Until he's cleared for full outfield work, Slater could be deployed as a designated hitter in Cactus League games so as to get in enough competitive at-bats to prepare himself for the start of the regular season. Slater is projected to serve a short-side platoon outfielder as he heads into his eighth season with the Giants.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Re-signs with Giants

Slater (elbow) signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Giants on Friday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. Hamstring problems sent Slater to the injured list twice early in the 2023 season, but he managed to bat .270 with a .748 OPS and 20 RBI across 207 plate appearances when healthy. Slater will turn 31 in December and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training after undergoing right elbow surgery in October.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Undergoes elbow surgery

Slater underwent scheduled surgery Wednesday on his right elbow, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Dr. Keith Meister performed an arthroscopic procedure to remove a bone spur from the back of Slater's elbow, and the 30-year-old outfielder also had an ulnar nerve transposition to address some nagging nerve discomfort in the same joint. He'll need around four months of rest and rehab but is expected to be ready for the beginning of spring training in 2024.

Slater is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Oct. 11, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Slater has been bothered by right elbow discomfort for the last couple of seasons and will finally head in for a surgical repair. • Giants' Austin Slater: Delivers three hits in win

Slater went 3-for-3 with a double and a hit-by-pitch in Monday's 2-1 win over the Padres. Slater did a great job atop the lineup versus tough lefty Blake Snell, but the Giants' Nos. 2-4 hitters went just 1-for-11 with a walk in the contest. While he's still in a short-side platoon role, Slater is hitting .294 (10-for-34) in September. The outfielder boasts a .271/.347/.398 slash line with five home runs, 20 RBI, 23 runs scored and two stolen bases over 202 plate appearances this year.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Expected to be available Sunday

Slater (head) is expected to be available to play in Sunday's game versus the Rockies, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Slater was scratched from Friday's lineup and didn't play Saturday due to dizziness, but it sounds like he's going to be fine. The Rockies are starting right-hander Peter Lambert on Sunday, so Slater figures to begin the game on the bench.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Scratched due to dizziness

Slater was scratched from the lineup Friday versus the Rockies due to dizziness, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He had been set to cover center field and bat leadoff, but Luis Matos will take over both duties. Slater should be considered day-to-day.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Back on bench against righty

Slater is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Slater started in each of the last four games while going 5-for-10 with a double, four walks, six runs and one RBI, but all of those starts came while the Giants opposed left-handed pitchers. He'll move back to the bench versus Reds right-hander Hunter Greene and should serve as a short-side platoon outfielder moving forward.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Reaches base four times

Slater went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks in Sunday's win over Atlanta. Slater has produced two multi-hit performances in his last three games but was stuck in a nasty 0-for-22 skid since the start of August before that. Since the All-Star break, he's gone 9-for-62 (.145) with a 6:23 BB:K and four extra-base hits. Slater owns a .255/.335/.390 slash line through 158 plate appearances this season.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Knocks fifth homer

Slater went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Athletics. Slater made an impact off the bench when he hit for Michael Conforto in the sixth inning. Three of Slater's five homers this season have come in July, though he's gone just 6-for-36 (.167) for the month. The outfielder is at a .298/.365/.471 slash line with 16 RBI, 14 runs scored and two stolen bases through 115 plate appearances in his usual short-side platoon role.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Hits fourth homer

Slater went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-2 win over the Reds, which was completed Tuesday after a weather delay. Slater has just five hits over his last 12 games, but four of them have gone for extra bases. The right-handed outfielder is up to four homers, 14 RBI, 13 runs scored, two stolen bases and a .333/.408/.506 slash line through 98 plate appearances. He continues to serve in a short-side platoon role for the Giants, though his playing time could remain relatively thin while the team's outfield is at full health.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Swats third homer

Slater went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Rockies. The 30-year-old outfielder began the game on the bench, but he pinch hit for Mike Yastrzemski in the fifth inning against southpaw reliever Brad Hand and launched what proved to be the game-winning homer. Slater has only two hits in his last nine games but both of them have left the yard, and his extreme splits -- he boasts a 1.006 OPS in 48 plate appearances against lefties this season, but only a .759 mark in 39 PAs against righties -- should keep him in a short-side platoon role in the second half.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Heads to bench

Slater is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Mets, Amy Gutierrez of the Giants' official site reports. Slater will take a seat after he went 1-for-8 with a solo home run and four strikeouts over the last two games of the team's series with Toronto. Joc Pederson will start in right field while Wilmer Flores enters the lineup at designated hitter and bats second in the series opener with New York.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Provides only offense in loss

Slater went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays. He wasn't even in the starting lineup, but Slater stepped in when Michael Conforto exited the game with a hamstring issue after making a catch in the bottom of the first inning. Slater then gave the Giants their only spark of offense by taking Bowden Francis deep in the fifth for his second homer of the year. The 30-year-old outfielder has started only one of the last seven games while stuck on the short side of a platoon, but his workload against right-handed pitching figures to increase if Conforto ends up missing more time. Slater certainly hasn't hurt his case for a bigger role with a .391/.435/.516 slash line in 69 plate appearances this season.

Slater didn't start Friday, but he entered as a pinch hitter for LaMonte Wade in the eighth inning. Slater then racked up three singles, including one to plate an insurance run in the 11th. The 30-year-old outfielder continues to be a force against left-handed pitchers -- two of his three hits Friday came against southpaws. Slater owns a .431/.463/.529 slash line with a home run, 10 RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases through 54 plate appearances this season, mainly in a short-side platoon role. He has just three extra-base hits on the season and is still looking for his first home run since May 29.

  • Giants' Austin Slater: Three hits in win

Slater went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Monday's 4-3 win over the Cardinals. Slater has hit safely in five of his last six games, going 8-for-17 (.471) in that span. The outfielder's solid stretch of hitting has helped him get into the lineup versus two of the last seven righties the Giants have faced in addition to his usual spot atop the order versus lefties. He's slashing .400/.438/.511 with one home run, two stolen bases, nine RBI and six runs scored over 48 plate appearances this season.
