  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Activation coming soon

Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Sewald (oblique) is meeting with the Diamondbacks medical team to determine whether he needs another rehab appearance or if he's ready to return from the 15-day injured list, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Sewald allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in his first rehab outing at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. That outing might be the only rehab appearance that Sewald needs, as Lovullo noted that the right-hander is "getting extremely close" to a return to the Arizona bullpen. Sewald has been out all season with a strained left oblique, but he should take over as the team's closer once he's activated.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Set for rehab assignment

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Sewald (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Reno, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Sewald sustained a Grade 2 left oblique strain late in spring training and has been on the 15-day injured list all season. The right-hander will likely need multiple rehab outings before he makes his way back to the majors. Kevin Ginkel has done a fine job filling in as the Diamondbacks' closer, but Sewald should eventually get his old job back.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Set for another bullpen session

Sewald (oblique) will throw a second bullpen session Tuesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Sewald threw 18 pitches in his bullpen session Saturday, which was his first since being placed on the 15-day IL with a Grade 2 left oblique strain. It's unclear what the next step will be after Tuesday's session, but Sewald will presumably eventually advance to throwing live batting practice before heading out on a rehab assignment.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Throws bullpen session

Sewald (oblique) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Sewald threw 18 pitches in what was his first bullpen session since being placed on the injured list in late March. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo was unsure of the next steps but believes another bullpen is likely. The club will want to see how the right-hander responds Sunday before moving forward.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Slated for mound work

Sewald (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Saturday's bullpen session will mark Sewald's first opportunity to throw off a mound since he suffered a Grade 2 left oblique strain in late March. He will likely require additional bullpen sessions before progressing to facing live hitters and potentially a rehab assignment in the minors, but the right-hander seems to be trending toward a return in late April. Until then, Kevin Ginkel will continue serving as Arizona's closer.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Playing catch

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Sewald (oblique) played catch from 60 feet Monday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

The right-hander suffered a Grade 2 oblique strain late in spring training, so the fact he's back to throwing just over a week later is an encouraging development. Sewald will need to progress to throwing long toss before moving onto bullpen sessions, so he shouldn't be expected to be activated when first eligible April 9.
