• Rockies' Austin Gomber: Falls to Phillies

  Gomber (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Phillies, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four over 5.1 innings. After allowing a two-run homer to J.T. Realmuto in the first inning, Gomber rebounded to keep Philly off the board until Bryce Harper's RBI double in the sixth. However, the Rockies couldn't get anything going off Ranger Suarez, sticking Gomber with a 5-0 loss, his first of the season. The left-hander sports a 4.95 ERA with a 1.50 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through his first four starts (20 innings) this season. Gomber's currently on track to face the Padres at home in his next outing.

• Rockies' Austin Gomber: Quality start against Snakes

  Gomber came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. The 30-year-old lefty produced his first quality start of the season, no mean feat at Coors Field, and exited the game after 98 pitches (61 strikes) in line for his first win of the season. The Rockies' bullpen couldn't seal the deal, however. Gomber will carry a 4.91 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 14:8 K:BB through 14.2 innings into his next start, which lines up for a road tilt early next week in Philadelphia.

  Gomber came away with a no-decision in Friday's 10-7 win over the Rays, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out seven. The southpaw ran up high pitch counts in the first couple innings but was able to limit the damage, eventually hitting the showers after 89 pitches (57 strikes). Gomber has a 6.23 ERA and 10:6 K:BB through his first 8.2 innings this season, and he'll need to rein in the walks if he's going to be a streaming option even away from Coors Field. He lines up for another home start next week against Arizona, however.

• Rockies' Austin Gomber: Can't go deep enough for win

  Gomber allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Arizona on Saturday. The Rockies scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to give Gomber a 7-3 lead, but he couldn't get through the bottom of the frame, giving up a two-run homer to Lourdes Gurriel followed by a walk before he was pulled. The inability to remain in the game long enough to qualify for a victory compounded an overall poor start by the southpaw, as he walked as many batters as he struck out and tossed a laborious 91 pitches. Gomber posted a 5.53 ERA over his previous two campaigns and finished with a 5.6 K/9 last season, so he's not someone fantasy managers are likely to have on their radar.

He's expected to work two innings before turning the game over to a cadre of relievers. After agreeing to a one-year, $3.15 million deal with the Rockies in the offseason to avoid arbitration, Gomber's rotation spot should be fairly secure heading into Opening Day.

Gomber finished 2023 with a 5.50 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 139 innings, but his numbers became much more respectable when pitching away from Coors Field (3.68 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 63.2 frames). The 30-year-old southpaw missed the final month of the season due to back inflammation, and the Rockies have yet to offer an update on his status during the offseason.

This doesn't sound like an overly serious diagnosis, but Gomber has been battling back issues for a while and the Rockies will go ahead and shut him down for the final three weeks of the 2023 regular season. The 29-year-old left-hander finishes with a 9-9 record, 5.50 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 87:43 K:BB in 27 starts covering 139 innings, but with stark splits -- he had a respectable 3.68 ERA and 1.37 WHIP on the road, and a 7.05 ERA and 1.59 WHIP at Coors Field.

Gomber has been battling back issues for the past month, and it flared up on him Monday, necessitating his removal in the third inning. For what it's worth, the left-hander said after the game that he believes he can avoid the injured list. Heading into Monday, Gomber had been in the midst of a productive run since the All-Star break, turning in a 3.69 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB across 46.1 innings over his eight starts. He coughed up two runs on four hits and two walks in 2.2 innings against Atlanta.

The quality start was his first in over a month and fifth of the season, but he's also had six outings in which he coughed up five runs or more. Unsurprisingly, most of the disasters have come at home -- he sports a 4.60 ERA on the road, but a 9.40 mark at Coors Field. Gomber's next start will likely come early next week in Cincinnati.
