Alcantara (2-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings against the Rockies. He struck out three. Alcantara gave up a run and two extra-base hits on the first six pitches of his night. He shut down the Rockies from there, only allowing another run on an Elias Diaz solo shot in the sixth. Alcantara has failed to live up to his phenomenal 2022 campaign. He has allowed at least two runs in nine of his 10 starts and has a career-high 4.86 ERA. His FIP sits at 3.58, implying he will improve, but he may not reach the dominance he had last season.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Takes fifth loss
Alcantara (1-5) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against the Giants. He struck out five. Alcantara has now coughed up 10 runs over his last two starts, an unfortunate development after he gave up just two runs over 8.1 innings May 7 against the Cubs. The right-hander has given up multiple runs in eight of his nine starts this year and has an unimpressive 5.05 ERA. The 27-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Rockies on the road in his next start.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Takes loss after faltering late
Alcantara (1-4) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over 7.2 innings during a 6-5 loss to the Reds. He struck out nine. Alcantara served up a three-run home run to Jake Fraley in the fifth, but he was still in line for the win until he struggled in the eighth. The reigning NL Cy Young winner was pulled after surrendering the lead and was charged with three total runs in the frame. Alcantara continues to have a long leash, but he's struggled to shut down teams late in games like he did last year. He's allowed multiple runs in seven of his first eight starts and sports a 4.91 ERA over 51.1 innings. His 1.21 WHIP and 49:14 K:BB suggest the ERA will drop eventually, but it's clear he's working through some adjustments.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Pitches into ninth inning
Alcantara allowed two runs on nine hits and did not walk a batter over 8.1 innings Sunday against the Cubs. He struck out nine and did not factor into the decision. Alcantara had one of his vintage performances Sunday afternoon but wasn't able to quite close the door on the Cubs. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker opted to send Alcantara back to the mound for the ninth, sitting at 100 pitches, after he threw a combined 12 pitches between the seventh and eighth innings. He started by striking out Dansby Swanson, but then a single, a double and another single would drive in two runs to even the game at 2-2. Still, it was an overall dominant effort from the 27-year-old, but he's still in search of his first win since he threw a complete-game shutout April 4. Alcantara will now take a 4.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 40:12 K:BB into his next projected start against the Reds.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Falls to Atlanta
Alcantara (1-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against Atlanta. He struck out five. Alcantara struggled Tuesday, though his final line certainly could've been worse, as he managed to strand nine baserunners over five high-stress innings. Overall, it's been a disappointing start to the year for Alcantara following his Cy Young campaign. His ERA is up to 5.09 with a 1.25 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through six starts (35.1 innings). The 27-year-old Alcantara will look to get back on track in his next outing, tentatively lined up for this weekend against the Cubs, where the ace will be looking for his first win since April 4.... Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Solid in return from injury
Alcantara did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against Atlanta. He struck out six. Alcantara was scratched from his last start with tendinitis in his bicep but managed to go 5.2 innings and throw 88 pitches. He kept a clean sheet through five innings, but Atlanta caught up to him in the sixth. Ronald Acuna hit a solo homer to start the inning and Vaughn Grissom ended the frame with an RBI single that resulted in Eddie Rosario being thrown out at home. Though Alcantara sports a 1-2 record and a 5.04 ERA, most of his earned runs came from a blowup start against the Phillies in which he allowed nine runs over four innings. Regardless, Alcantara has been off to a rocky start to the season and will look to turn things around and live up to the lofty expectations set for him leading up to the campaign.... See More ... Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Cleared for Wednesday's start
Alcantara (biceps) has officially been cleared to start Wednesday in Atlanta after getting through a 25-pitch bullpen session Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Alcantara had to be scratched from a scheduled outing over the weekend with right biceps tendinitis, but he's managed to avoid the injured list and is ready to go. Fantasy managers should have him in their lineups this week.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: In line to start Wednesday
Alcantara (biceps) is scheduled to start Wednesday's game at Atlanta, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Alcantara was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Guardians due to biceps tendinitis. The right-handed hurler will be able to play catch Sunday, and if all goes well during his bullpen session Monday, he should be able to take the hill Wednesday while handling a normal workload. Fantasy managers should plan on Alcantara being on the bump this week, though it's worthwhile to keep an eye on news pertaining to the 27-year-old leading up to Wednesday's contest.... See More ... Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Scratched with biceps tendinitis
Alcantara was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Guardians due to biceps tendinitis but is expected to start next week against Atlanta, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. It's never a good sign to see a pitcher dealing with an arm injury, but the fact that Alcantara will avoid the injured list for now is encouraging. He's expected to miss just one start, with Devin Smeltzer filling in for him in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader. It's possible the biceps issue partially explains Alcantara's disappointing 5.47 ERA to start the year.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Fans nine in loss
Alcantara (1-2) took the loss Sunday against Arizona, allowing five runs on seven hits through six innings. He struck out nine. Alcantara put on an impressive performance on the mound with what is easily a season-high strikeout total despite significantly worsening his earned run average since his previous outing, Alcantara couldn't work his way to a win, as the Marlins' offense was stifled by opposing pitcher Zac Gallen. With a 5.84 ERA and a 20:6 K:BB ratio over 24.2 innings pitched, the 27-year-old right-hander will look to bounce back in his next start, tentatively scheduled for the upcoming series against Cleveland.... Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Hammered by Phillies
Alcantara (1-1) allowed nine runs on 10 hits and a walk over four innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against Philadelphia. Alcantara looked like his usual self early and worked through two perfect innings to start the game. The Phillies then jumped on him for five runs in the third inning before tagging him with four more in the fifth. Alcantara tossed 77 pitches and forced just five whiffs on 36 swings. His ERA ballooned to 5.79 with an 11:6 K:BB through 18.2 frames. He's lined up for a home start against Arizona this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Twirls shutout against Twins
Alcantara (1-0) collected the win Tuesday, allowing three hits and a walk over nine shutout innings while striking out five in a 1-0 victory over Minnesota. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner retired the first 11 batters he faced before Trevor Larnach reached on an infield single in the fourth inning, and no Minnesota baserunner even got to second base on the night in a masterful performance by Alcantara. The right-hander generated 15 swinging strikes among his 100 pitches (68 strikes), and he appears to have rediscovered last year's form quickly after a shaky effort Opening Day. Alcantara's next start should come early next week in Philadelphia.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Only two strikeouts in opener
Alcantara did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks over 5.2 innings against the Mets. He struck out two. This goes down as a disappointment for those who drafted Alcantara, but he had 14 swinging strikes on 96 pitches, which suggests the strikeouts should tick back up. Alcantara has never been the most dominant arm in terms of whiffs, but he's been over eight strikeouts per nine the past three seasons. The right-hander excels by using his changeup and sinker to keep the ball on the ground while rarely handing out free passes, and fantasy GMs feeling a twinge of panic about their Alcantara shares should keep in mind he walked five Giants on Opening Day last season, and the rest of the campaign turned out pretty well.... Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Eight Ks over three scoreless
Alcantara struck out eight over three perfect innings in Friday's Grapefruit League start against the Astros. The right-hander was sensational once again, and the 2022 NL Cy Young winner has a miniscule 0.68 ERA over his work in the exhibition season with a 15:4 K:BB through 13.1 innings. Everything Alcantara has shown so far this spring suggests he will once again be among the best pitchers in baseball during the 2023 season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Given Opening Day nod
Alcantara has been named the Marlins' Opening Day starter, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The reigning National League Cy Young winner will take the ball March 30 versus the Mets, squaring off against Max Scherzer. Alcantara has permitted just one run so far this spring across three Grapefruit League starts sandwiched around his WBC stint with the Dominican Republic.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Wins NL Cy Young Award
Alcantara was named the unanimous winner of the National League Cy Young Award on Wednesday. The 27-year-old finished 2022 with a 2.28 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 207:50 K:BB across 228.2 innings and secured all 30 first-place votes. Alcantara led MLB in pitching bWAR (8.0) and innings pitched, and he was also second in the NL in ERA, sixth in WHIP and fourth in strikeouts. The right-hander inked a five-year, $56 million extension with the Marlins in November 2021, so he's not likely to be going elsewhere anytime soon.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Shut down for season
Alcantara won't start Wednesday's regular-season finale against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Alcantara capped off his dominant season Friday in Milwaukee, allowing a run on five hits and no walks while striking out eight in eight innings to take an unlucky loss. While he would have lined up to start Wednesday on normal rest, manager Don Mattingly said Saturday that the right-hander won't pitch again in 2022 in order to give him extra rest ahead of the offseason. Alcantara had a career-best season during the 2022 campaign, posting a 2.28 ERA, 207:50 K:BB and 0.98 WHIP in 228.2 innings over 32 starts.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Strikes out eight in loss
Alcantara (14-9) took the loss against Milwaukee on Friday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight and walking none over eight innings. Alcantara pitched well enough to get the win, but received no support from his offense and left the game with the loss after tossing eight innings of one-run ball. He threw 75 of 100 pitches for strikes in what was his fifth quality start in a row. It was Alcantara's third game in a row where he lasted eight innings or more. The outing lowered the righty's ERA to 2.28, solidifying him as one of the best pitchers in the game. He has thrown a major-league leading six complete games this year, four of which have come since the start of August.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Posts 11 strikeouts
Alcantara (14-8) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over eight innings against the Nationals. He struck out 11. Alcantara's only blemish came from a solo homer from first baseman Joey Meneses to open the scoring with two outs in the first inning. In his last 11 games, the righty has posted a seemingly uneventful 3.30 ERA over 76.1 innings but allowed four runs or more four times and one run or fewer five times during that stretch. The 27-year-old has been particularly stifling at home, with a 9-4 record and 1.64 ERA over 121 innings compared to a 5-4 record and 3.16 ERA over 99.2 innings on the road.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Fires fifth complete game
Alcantara (13-8) allowed one run on seven hits and a walk in a complete-game win over Washington on Sunday. He struck out seven batters. Alcantara continued his push for the NL Cy Young with yet another terrific performance Sunday. The lone run against him came during the fourth inning on Luis Garcia's double-play groundout. The 27-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 2.37 across a league-leading 212.2 innings. Alcantara has thrown three complete games since the start of August, posting a 3.27 ERA with a 50:10 K:BB through nine starts during that stretch. He's lined up for a rematch with the Nationals at home next week.... See More ... See Less
