Player Outlook
Tyler Mahle made just five starts for the Twins before hurting his elbow and needing Tommy John surgery. He still landed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Rangers and could join that rotation late this season. Mahle was off to a strong start prior to the injury, producing a 3.16 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 25.2 innings in five starts. He made just two starts for the Twins in 2022 after a trade from the Reds, missing the second half of the season with a shoulder injury. The Twins got just seven starts in return for Spencer Steer, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Steven Hajjar. Mahle won't turn 30 until next September, and his 9.5 K/9 and 105 ERA+ over the last two seasons show he can still be a rotation staple. Joining the reigning World Series champions gives him an opportunity to compile wins with strong defense and run support, but first he has to make a full recovery.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Double-A bound for next rehab start

Mahle (elbow) is scheduled to make the fifth start of his rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Frisco. Mahle has yet to allow a run and has struck out 11 batters over 9.1 innings over the first four starts of his rehab assignment, which has included stops at Double-A, Triple-A Round Rock and the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. The 29-year-old has been building up his pitch count slowly as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery, as he tossed 46 pitches and 2.2 innings in his most recent outing for Round Rock on Saturday. Mahle will likely need to push his pitch count in the 65-to-80 range before the Rangers are comfortable bringing him back from the 60-day injured list and slotting him into the big-league rotation.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Set for another rehab start

Mahle (elbow) will make his next rehab start Thursday with Double-A Frisco, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Mahle made the fourth start of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out three and allowing two hits and one walk. The 29-year-old right-hander continues to build up his pitch count while he works his way back from May 2023 Tommy John surgery, and he could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list in early August.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Throwing for Round Rock

Mahle (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Mahle has bounced around during his minor-league rehab assignment, making appearances with Round Rock, Double-A Frisco and the Rangers' Arizona Complex League affiliate. He'll return to Round Rock for his fourth outing after completing 2.2 innings in his previous start. Mahle's recovery from Tommy John surgery is close to complete, and he could be back with the Rangers in early August.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Strikes out five in ACL start

Mahle (elbow) struck out five and allowed one hit and one walk over 2.2 scoreless innings during his rehab start Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Mahle had made his previous two rehab starts at Double-A Frisco, but he shifted his assignment to the ACL this week while all of the Rangers' full-season affiliates are off due to the All-Star break. The right-hander has looked strong thus far in his first three minor-league outings coming back from his May 2023 Tommy John surgery. He has yet to let in a run over 6.2 innings and built his pitch count up to 45 on Monday. Mahle will likely shift his assignment back to a higher-level affiliate over the weekend and will presumably need at least two or three more minor-league outings to get fully stretched out before he becomes a realistic option for the Rangers' rotation.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Another rehab start coming

Mahle (elbow) will throw three innings in the Arizona Complex League on Monday, MLB.com reports. This will be the third rehab start for Mahle, who previously made a couple of two-inning starts, one for Triple-A Round Rock and one for Double-A Frisco. He threw 19 pitches and then 32 pitches in the first two rehab outings.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Ready for second rehab start

Mahle (elbow) is scheduled to make his second rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Round Rock, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. Mahle is expected to cover around two innings once again Tuesday after he tossed two scoreless frames while striking out a batter in his first rehab outing with Round Rock on July 2. The right-hander is building back up from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last May and likely won't be an option for the Texas rotation until his 30-day rehab window comes to an end in early August.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Rehab assignment coming

Mahle (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Mahle is scheduled to throw a bullpen session at Camden Yards this weekend, per Texas manager Bruce Bochy, prior to joining Round Rock. If all goes well, the right-hander could be part of the Rangers' rotation by the beginning of August. Mahle is working his way back from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last May.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Throws to batters

Mahle (elbow) threw 30-to-40 pitches in a live batting practice session Thursday, Kenndi Landry of MLB.com reports. This was Mahle's second live BP session, and he faced Josh Jung (wrist) in this one. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said afterward that the right-hander showed good command and velocity. He'll take a week off before throwing more live BP, then Mahle will go on a rehab assignment. He won't be an option for the Rangers' rotation until after the All-Star break.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Slated to face live hitters

Mahle (elbow) is expected to face live hitters Monday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Mahle has been throwing bullpen sessions over the past few weeks, and facing live hitters appears to be just another step in the recovery process. It's been a little more than a year since the right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery, and Mahle isn't expected to be ready for game action until some point after the All-Star break.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Completes bullpen session

Mahle (elbow) threw a bullpen session off a game mound May 18, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. According to Grant, Mahle took the mound for biomechanical evaluation, so it's not entirely clear if he's at a point in his rehab from May 2023 Tommy John surgery where he's regularly throwing bullpen sessions, or if the Rangers simply wanted to get a quick gauge of his progress. In any case, Mahle is unlikely to be cleared for game action until after the All-Star break, and he's expected to require an extended minor-league rehab assignment before he's activated from the 60-day injured list.

  • Rangers' Tyler Mahle: Gets two-year pact from Texas

Mahle (elbow) signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Rangers on Thursday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Mahle underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow this past May and is likely to miss the entire first half of the 2024 season, but he'll be an intriguing rotation option for the reigning World Series champions once he returns to full health. The 29-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.90 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 424 strikeouts over his last 374 innings dating back to the beginning of the 2020 campaign. This deal with Texas will pay him $5.5 million in 2024 and $16.5 million in 2025, and he can also earn another $5 million via performance-based bonuses.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Set for Tommy John surgery

Mahle (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the 2023 season, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. After Mahle was initially placed on the 15-day injured list May 3 with a posterior impingement and flexor pronator strain in his right elbow, he was quickly shifted to the 60-day injured list Friday. Now nearly one week later, it has been determined he needs Tommy John surgery and will be out for the remainder of the 2023 campaign and a significant chunk of 2024. Mahle was off to a strong start with Minnesota this year, producing a 3.16 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 25.2 innings in five starts. He's scheduled to hit free agency during the offseason.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Shifted to 60-day IL

Mahle (elbow) was moved to the 60-day injured list Friday, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Mahle was diagnosed with a right arm posterior impingement and flexor pronator strain last week and landed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. He will be shut down from throwing for at least four weeks and will have to be gradually built back up in order to return to a starter role. He'll be eligible to return in early July, but there's a decent chance Mahle will be out until after the All-Star break.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Shut down at least four weeks

Manager Rocco Baldelli said Sunday that Mahle will be shut down at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a posterior impingement and flexor pronator strain, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Mahle was removed from Thursday's start against the Royals due to an elbow issue, and he won't throw in the coming weeks after receiving his diagnosis. The right-hander will be re-evaluated after four weeks, and he'll presumably be sidelined until at least mid-June since he'll need to build back up following his shutdown. A better idea of Mahle's status should come into focus once he's re-evaluated, but he's facing an extended absence.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Missing at least one start

Mahle's (elbow) MRI and X-ray results will be reviewed with the team doctor Sunday, but manager Rocco Baldelli expects the right-hander to miss at least one turn through the rotation, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. The 28-year-old was diagnosed with an impingement to the back of his right elbow after exiting his start against the Royals on Thursday, and more information should be available once the medical imaging is reviewed. Mahle may have a difficult time avoiding the injured list, especially since the Twins are already down a starter with Kenta Maeda (triceps) on the shelf.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Has elbow impingement

Mahle has been diagnosed with an impingement to the back of his right elbow, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Mahle exited Thursday's start against the Royals with the injury but didn't have any imaging done, and the issue will be treated with anti-inflammatories. It's possible he could even make his next start if the symptoms clear up in a few days. Realistically though, Mahle will probably be pushed back, with a trip to the injured list also possible.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Exits early Thursday

Mahle exited Thursday's start against the Royals after four innings due to right posterior elbow soreness, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Mahle was effective across four innings, allowing only one earned run on two hits while striking out six. The severity of the issue is unclear, though he may undergo tests in the coming days to determine his availability for his next scheduled start.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Spins best start of season

Mahle did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing one run on three hits without a walk over 6.1 innings against Washington. He struck out four. Mahle was chased in the seventh inning by a Joey Meneses home run, but he was still in line for the win. However the Minnesota bullpen did not hold up, forcing Mahle to settle for a quality start in his best outing of the season. The 28-year-old righty didn't walk a batter for the first time in 2023 and allowed a season-low three hits. Mahle is currently lined up to face the Yankees in his next start.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Stumbles against Yankees

Mahle (1-2) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over 4.1 innings as the Twins were downed 6-1 by the Yankees. He struck out five. Three of the four hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including home runs by Kyle Higashioka and Anthony Rizzo, but it was Mahle's own error that tempered the damage to his ERA. He tossed only 53 of 90 pitches for strikes before exiting. Mahle will carry a 4.11 ERA and 18:5 K:BB through 15.1 innings into his next outing, likely to come next week in Boston.

  • Twins' Tyler Mahle: Start pushed to Saturday

Mahle will have his start pushed back one day from Friday to Saturday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The Twins' rotation will shift as the team skips Kenta Maeda's (arm) turn through the rotation this weekend against the Yankees. As a result, Louie Varland will be recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to start Friday and Mahle will take the hill Saturday. Mahle has been mediocre through two starts, maintaining a 4.09 ERA and 1.36 WHIP to go along with a more impressive 13:2 K:BB across 11 frames.
