Player Outlook
Miguel Castro's strong performance during Cactus League performance earned him a greater role in Arizona's bullpen out of spring training. The 28-year-old mostly handled setup duties, but he got some run as the D'Backs' closer early in the season. The right-hander compiled 5 saves, 3 wins and 8 holds by the end of May to go along with a 2.22 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. It looked like a breakout season was on the horizon, but Castro opened June with a couple of rough outings and was soon ousted as closer. The right-hander still had a solid season overall, as his 6 wins, 7 saves, 13 holds and 1.18 WHIP were all personal bests. Castro ended 2023 on a high note with a 14-game scoreless streak with 17 strikeouts over 12.2 innings. Look for him to spend most of 2024 in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: More runs allowed Thursday

Castro allowed one run on two hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings in Thursday's spring game against Kansas City. Castro has allowed runs in five consecutive appearances and owns an 11.12 ERA through 5.2 Cactus League innings. There was a one-month stretch from mid-May to mid-June in 2023 when Castro was closing games and regularly pitching high-leverage situations, but things fell apart quickly. Despite the poor spring results, Castro is expected to be part of the Opening Day bullpen.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Back from paternity list

The Diamondbacks reinstated Castro (personal) from the paternity list Monday. Arizona optioned right-hander Slade Cecconi to Triple-A Reno to clear room on the 28-man active roster for Castro, who spent the maximum three days away from the team following the birth of his child. Castro, who has posted a 1.64 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over his last 14 appearances, should step back into a middle relief or setup role for the final week of the regular season.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Placed on paternity leave

The Diamondbacks placed Castro on the paternity list Friday. Castro appears likely to miss the Diamondbacks' entire three-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium as he welcomes a new addition to his growing family. Slade Cecconi has been recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding roster move.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Spoils Pfaadt's outing

Castro (5-6) was credited with Friday's loss to San Diego. He allowed four runs on three hits over a third of an inning. Castro entered a scoreless tie after Brandon Pfaadt fired seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He hit a batter with his first pitch then allowed a pair of singles and left following Fernando Tatis' home run made it 4-0. It was the second straight contest in which Castro has allowed four runs.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Blows lead, takes loss

Castro (5-4) was tagged with Thursday's loss to Atlanta. He allowed three runs on two hits and one walk over two-thirds of an inning. Castro, who began the eighth inning protecting a 5-3 lead, sandwiched a pair of outs around a double before getting into trouble. He walked Ozzie Albies before Austin Riley took him deep for a three-run home run. Although Castro's 3.4 BB/9 is an improvement over previous seasons, it's still a high number and the right-hander walked a delicate line before Thursday's costly free pass. A one-time part of the closer picture, Castro has since returned to a middle-relief role, one in which he's had recent success. Castro entered the game with a 1.50 ERA over his previous 12 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Records seventh save

Castro picked up the save in Monday's 9-8 win over the Phillies. He allowed one run on two hits and no walks while striking out one over one inning. Castro's seventh save of the season wasn't particularly smooth, but the Diamondbacks' two-run lead heading into the ninth inning provided him just enough cushion. The right-hander has had a shaky start to June, giving up six runs across three innings. With the Diamondbacks still taking a closer-by-committee approach at the back end of their bullpen, fantasy managers can't count on Castro continuing to get consistent save opportunities if he keeps giving up runs.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Stumbles in ninth inning

Castro (3-2) allowed four runs on two hits and two walks Sunday. He recorded two outs (one strikeout) while blowing a save chance and taking the loss against Atlanta. Castro entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead and coughed up a go-ahead grand slam. He was riding a 10.1-inning scoreless streak since May 7 when he gave up a homer and blew a save against Washington. The 28-year-old's ERA spiked to 3.46 with a 23:10 K:BB through 26 frames.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Works around traffic for save

Castro allowed two hits in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-2 win over Atlanta. Castro put two of the first three batters aboard in the ninth inning, but got a flyout from Ozzie Albies and a groundout from Orlando Arcia to avoid disaster. This was Castro's 11th straight scoreless appearance, a span in which he's picked up five of his six saves this year while adding two holds and two wins. The right-hander continues to get late-inning work as a result of his strong pitching -- he's at a 2.13 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 22:8 K:BB through 25.1 innings this year, bringing stability to the back end of Arizona's bullpen. Andrew Chafin remains Castro's primary competition for save chances in what's become a two-man committee.

Castro allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning against Boston on Sunday. He struck out two and picked up a save. Castro coughed up a single but still closed out the 4-2 win with ease. • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Unavailable for save

Castro was not used for a save opportunity in Wednesday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to Philadelphia. None of Arizona's most trusted bullpen arms were available due to heavy usage this week. Castro had pitched three of the last four days, as had Andrew Chafin and Kyle Nelson. With a 5-3 lead entering the ninth inning, manager Torey Lovullo tried to get by with Jose Ruiz, but he allowed a two-run home run with two outs that sent the game into an extra frame.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Notches fifth save

Castro tossed a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his fifth save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Phillies. He didn't walk or strike out a batter, but Castro instead generated weak contact as he retired the Phillies' 6-7-8 hitters on only 11 pitches (seven strikes.) The right-hander has picked up three of the Diamondbacks' last four saves as the team tries to shift Andrew Chafin into a fireman role -- the lefty got the first two outs of the eighth inning while facing the likes of Trea Turner and Bryce Harper. On the season, Castro sports a 2.42 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB through 22.1 innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Possible waiver wire pickups

The Diamondbacks never officially named left-hander Andrew Chafin the closer, so we shouldn't expect his removal to be official either. But three of their past four saves have gone to right-hander Castro instead, and in two of those chances, including the latest Saturday, Chafin was among those who set up for him. Castro hasn't been the bat-misser Chafin has, but he did notch three strikeouts in this one and has been a steadier performer at the back end of games. Maybe the Diamondbacks' intention here is to play the matchups, or maybe one bad outing for Castro would put Chafin back in the driver's seat. But the bottom line is that if saves are scarce in your league, Castro is looking like a decent source of them.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Fans three in fourth save

Castro picked up the save Saturday against the Pirates. He allowed one walk while striking out three over one scoreless inning. Castro set a season high in strikeouts Saturday, sending Ji Hwan Bae, Connor Joe and Jason Delay back to the dugout after walking Rodolfo Castro to open up the ninth inning. After starting out the season firmly behind Andrew Chafin as the Diamondbacks' primary closer, Castro has received back-to-back save opportunities and converted each of them without allowing a single hit or run. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on the Diamondbacks' use of Chafin and Castro moving forward, in case one of the two begins to pull away with the closing job.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Converts third save

Castro picked up the save Wednesday against the Athletics. He struck out one batter in a clean ninth inning. Castro was called on in the ninth inning after Andrew Chafin pitched the previous two days, and he delivered a stress-free save, needing just 11 pitches to retire the side in order. Primarily used in a setup role, Castro has been excellent in 2023 with a 2.75 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Credited with win

Castro (2-1) earned the win over San Francisco on Sunday. He struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning. Castro worked the ninth inning in his last two appearances, picking up a save and a win. After he was lit up for three runs a week ago while pitching on a third consecutive day -- his 16th outing in 34 games -- manager Torey Lovullo tweaked bullpen rotations to keep arms fresh. Castro and Andrew Chafin remain in high-leverage roles, including important ninth-inning situations.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Closes out win

Castro allowed one hit and struck out one over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning to record the save in Friday's 7-5 win over the Giants. Castro got the call from the bullpen after Andrew Chafin got the first out of the ninth inning. It was Castro's second save of the season. Chafin has been the primary closer, but manager Torey Lovullo had him enter the eighth inning against a string of lefty batters. The sequence hinted at changes Lovullo mused about with Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic. In reaction to a string of adverse relief work, the manager talked about shifting roles and avoiding the overuse of his most trusted arms, like Chafin.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Records first save

Castro recorded his first save of the season Tuesday, allowing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning against the Cardinals. Castro entered the game to protect an 8-7 lead after Andrew Chafin gave up three runs at the beginning of the ninth inning. The 28-year-old bounced back from a one-out walk, retiring Dylan Carlson to end the game and record his first save of the year. With a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over eight innings, Castro is expected to continue sharing high-leverage opportunities late in games.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Dinged for first time

Castro allowed two runs on two hits and one walk over two-thirds of an inning in Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Brewers. Castro entered with Arizona trailing 1-0 and allowed a pair of inherited runners to score, then two of his own. The outing was the first blemish in four appearances for the right-hander, who typically works in the final third of close games.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Records first hold

Castro walked one and struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his first hold in Friday's 6-3 comeback win over the Dodgers. Castro gave the Diamondbacks four outs before giving way to Andrew Chafin for the save. Castro has yet to allow a run or hit in three outings while walking two and fanning five over 3.2 innings. As manager Torey Lovullo navigates end-game roles, he'll continue to mix and match relievers. Both Castro and Chafin have earned high-leverage opportunities late in games.

  • Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Earning greater role

Castro has allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven over six scoreless Cactus League innings. It's no surprise that Castro will make the roster, but his power arm could be utilized in high-leverage spots for a bullpen whose late-inning patterns are still taking shape. He's in the mix for save opportunities with Scott McGough and Kevin Ginkel with Opening Day coming next week. All three have posted strong numbers during spring ball.
