Refsnyder entered Thursday's game as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 in a 5-4 loss to Cleveland. Refsnyder pinch hit for second baseman Enmanuel Valdez and stayed in the game to play left field. It was the season debut for Refsnyder, who opened the year on the 10-day injured list due to a toe injury. He was activated to take the roster spot of Tyler O'Neill, who landed on the 7-day concussion list. Refsnyder will likely be in the starting nine whenever the Red Sox face a left-hander.... Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Returns from IL
The Red Sox reinstated Refsnyder (toe) from the 10-day injured list Thursday. Refsnyder isn't included in the lineup for Thursday's series finale with the Guardians, but he should see regular playing time versus left-handed pitching as a possible platoon mate for the lefty-hitting Wilyer Abreu in the corner outfield. The 33-year-old also made a start at first base during his four-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester, making him a possible option at that position if Triston Casas should need a day off. Refsnyder, who missed the first three weeks of the season with a fractured left pinkie toe, produced a .682 OPS in 242 plate appearances for Boston in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Nearing return
Refsnyder (toe) will play at least one more full rehab game with Triple-A Worcester before being activated from the injured list, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Refsnyder noted that his fractured left pinky toe still isn't fully healed and he will just have to play through some pain. He also revealed that he's been told his main role upon his return will be as a late-inning pinch hitter or defensive replacement.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Will see time at first base
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Refsnyder (toe) will play some first base upon his return from the 10-day injured list, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Refsnyder has some experience at the position, although he hasn't played at that spot since joining the Red Sox in 2022. With the Red Sox outfield crowded at the moment, Refsnyder will be reintroduced to first base, where he could see occasional action versus lefties. Refsnyder is on a minor-league rehab assignment while working his way back from a fractured left pinky toe and could be activated before long.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Begins rehab assignment
Refsnyder (toe) began a rehab assignment Wednesday at Triple-A Worcester and went hitless in three at-bats. Refsnynder struck out three times as the designated hitter for the WooSox before getting a day off Thursday. He's expected to play Friday, per Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, but he remains without a firm timeline for his return to the big-league roster.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Prepping for rehab assignment
Refsnyder (toe) could begin a rehab assignment next week, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Boston manager Alex Cora said Refsnyder is ramping up back at camp in Fort Myers. Both Refsnyder and Vaughn Grissom (groin) are on similar paths and will join teammates at Fenway Park next Tuesday for the home opener against the Orioles. The hope is both can begin playing in games shortly after that.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Hits shelf with fractured toe
The Red Sox placed Refsnyder (toe) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Refsnyder is likely to miss most or all of the first month of the season while he recovers from a fractured left pinkie toe. According to MLB.com, Refsnyder isn't being shut down entirely while he recovers from the injury, as he's been able to play catch and take batting practice in recent days.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Diagnosed with fractured toe
Refsnyder was diagnosed Wednesday with a fractured left pinky toe, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Refsnyder suffered the injury when he was hit by pitch during Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals and could be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks, per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. If there's a silver lining, Refsnyder's absence could make it easier for the Red Sox to carry Ceddanne Rafaela on the Opening Day roster.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Exits after HBP on foot
Refsnyder was removed from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game versus the Cardinals after being hit on the left foot by a pitch, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Refsnyder said afterward that he has a crack in the small toe on the foot, although it's not clear whether he's referring to a fracture or something else. The Red Sox should offer more clarity on the outfielder's status soon.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Collects two RBI in win
Refsynder went 1-for-2 with two RBI in Boston's 7-6 Grapefruit League win over Philadelphia on Monday. Refsynder smashed an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning and hit a groundball that resulted in another run for Boston later in the contest. It's a small sample size, but over three spring training games, the 32-year-old has maintained an impressive .900 on-base percentage. Given his career .324 slugging percentage, it's safe to say Refsnyder's value will be reliant on his positional versatility in the outfield. Expect the veteran to compete for a fourth or fifth outfielder spot throughout spring training.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Making second straight start
Refsnyder will start in left field for a second straight game Sunday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Refsnyder started in left field Saturday while Masataka Yoshida served as the designated hitter, but the latter was removed from the game after getting hit by a pitch on the leg. X-rays came back negative, but Yoshida is being held out of Sunday's lineup, enabling Refsnyder to get into the lineup again. Refsnyder had a couple of hits, including a double, a walk and a stolen base (his fifth) Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Nabs fourth steal
Refsnyder went 2-for-3 with a walk, a triple, two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Rockies. Getting the start in left field and hitting leadoff with lefty Austin Gomber on the mound for Colorado, Refsnyder connected on his first extra-base hit in June while producing his first multi-hit performance since May 24. The steal was his fourth of the season, tying his career high, and he continues to excel in his platoon role -- through 72 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this year, Refsnyder sports a .995 OPS.... Refsnyder went 1-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Refsnyder has drawn a walk in each of his last five games, though he remains confined to a limited role as a reserve outfielder. Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Swipes first bag of 2023
Refsnyder went 3-for-4 with one double, two RBI and one steal in Saturday's 4-3 loss to St. Louis. Refsnyder turned in a strong performance out of the three spot Saturday, driving in Pablo Reyes and Alex Verdugo on a fourth-inning double while grabbing a rare stolen base. in his last four years in the bigs (163 games), Refsnyder had stolen just two bags, making Saturday's swipe an outlier. After batting .307 in 177 plate appearances in 2022, Refsnyder is slashing .258/.361/.355 with one home run through 72 plate appearances this season.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Delivers two in win
Refsnyder started in left field and went 2-for-3 with two RBI in Tuesday's 7-6 win over Toronto. Refsnyder was in the starting lineup against a lefty -- just his second start over the last two weeks. He was able to provide production despite being limited to 10 plate appearances over the last 13 games. Refsnyder, who is hitting .224 with a .662 OPS, should be in the lineup most nights against southpaws, against whom he has a .306 average and .821 OPS.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: In Monday's lineup
Refsnyder will start in left field and bat third in Monday's game against the Angels, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports. Refsnyder's received several starts -- in center field and left field -- over the last week with Adam Duvall (wrist) on the injured list and Masataka Yoshida out with a hamstring injury. Refsnyder started in left field Sunday when Yoshida returned as the designated hitter and will remain there Monday, as the Red Sox bring Yoshida back slowly following a four-game absence. Jarren Duran has been called up from Triple-A Worcester on Monday and will start in center field, Duvall's position. The Red Sox could end up settling on a platoon in center field with some combination of Refsnyder and Enrique Hernandez as the right-handed options and Duran and Raimel Tapia as the left-handed options.... Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Starting again Friday
Refsnyder is starting again in left field and batting third for the Red Sox on Friday versus the Angels. The 32-year-old popped a solo home run Thursday to earn a second straight start in place of the injured Masataka Yoshida (hamstring). Refsnyder will be going up against Patrick Sandoval.... Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Out of lineup vs. righty
Refsnyder is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Rays. Refsnyder went a combined 0-for-7 while starting in center field in both of the first two games of the series at Tampa Bay, which came with the Rays bringing a pair of left-handed starting pitchers to the hill. The righty-hitting Refsnyder will give way to the lefty-hitting Raimel Tapia in center field Wednesday while Boston faces a right-hander (Taj Bradley) for the first time in the series. Manager Alex Cora could end up taking a platoon approach to center field while Adam Duvall (wrist) is out indefinitely, meaning that Refsnyder could see fewer opportunities than Tapia moving forward.... Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Brings home two in rout
Refsnyder went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's win over Detroit. He also drew a walk. Refsnyder's free pass with the bases loaded extended the Boston lead to 2-0 in the second inning. He extended the blowout with an RBI single in the eighth to make it 12-2. Refsnyder has gone 2-for-9 over five games in 2023, and he isn't likely to see much playing time unless a southpaw is on the mound.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Rob Refsnyder: Hitless in Florida
Refsnyder went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Saturday's spring game against Minnesota. Refsnyder, who made positive contributions in a limited role last season, entered spring training with a bead on the fourth outfielder job, but he's still looking for his first hit in Grapefruit League action. He's 0-for-17 with seven strikeouts and could be in danger of losing out on a roster spot. It was initially thought Jarren Duran was his main competition, but Raimel Tapia (8-for-19, five doubles, 1.263 OPS) is looking like a stronger candidate than both.... See More ... See Less
