  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Not pitching in season finale

Manager John Schneider said Friday that Bassitt won't start Sunday's game against Miami, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bassitt was slated to start the Blue Jays' final game of the 2024 season, but the 35-year-old right-hander will be rested instead. Schneider didn't name a replacement starter. Bassitt finishes the campaign with a 4.16 ERA -- his worst since 2016 -- along with a 1.46 WHIP and 168:70 K:BB across 171 innings (31 starts).

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Seven walks lead to loss

Bassitt (10-14) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and seven walks over 4.1 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out two. Bassitt walked a career-high seven batters and failed to complete five innings for the second consecutive start, allowing single runs in the second, third and fourth innings prior to being pulled with one out and two men on in the fifth. The 35-year-old righty holds a 4.16 ERA and 1.46 WHIP, the first time his ERA has moved above four and his WHIP above 1.24 since 2016. Bassitt is in line to make one more start on the final day of the regular season against the Marlins.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Let down by defense

Bassitt allowed seven runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Tuesday. A pair of Toronto errors, including one by Bassitt himself, helped minimize the damage to his ERA. The Blue Jays would recover from the deficit Bassitt created, which helped him avoid taking the loss. Still, he wasn't very sharp with just 48 of his 80 pitches landing for strikes. Since the All-Star break, he's been charged with four or more runs in six of his 11 outings, alternating between decent and poor performances the whole time. The right-hander is now at a 4.16 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 166:63 K:BB through 166.2 innings over 30 starts this season. Bassitt's next start is projected to be on the road versus the Rays.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Sharp in win No. 10

Bassitt (10-12) picked up the win in Tuesday's 6-2 victory over the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. The veteran right-hander gave up three singles in the first inning to bring home a run, but Bassitt was dominant after that, leaving the mound after 101 pitches (63 strikes) with his 12th quality start of the year. It's his first win since Aug. 6, and in 10 starts since the All-Star break he's gone 2-6 with a 5.50 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 64:15 K:BB through 55.2 innings. Bassitt will look to string together consecutive victories for the first time since early June in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the Rangers.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: No support in tough-luck loss

Bassitt (9-13) took the loss against Boston on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over 6.2 innings. Bassitt was excellent in the outing, racking up 17 whiffs and tying a season high with nine punchouts while holding Boston to just a first-inning run. However, the Blue Jays' offense couldn't muster up any support, as the team was held to three baserunners and zero runs. Though Bassitt was saddled with his third loss in his past four outings, he did register his first quality start over that span. He's pitched to a 4.27 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 149:57 K:BB through 151.2 innings on the season.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Sunk by nightmare first inning

Bassitt (9-11) took the loss against the Athletics on Sunday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over four innings. The Athletics brought 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring six runs and crushing two homers before Bassitt was finally able to escape. It's been a frustrating year for the veteran, who was coming off a seven-inning gem against one of baseball's best lineups in Baltimore. However, that outing was his only quality start in seven chances since July 4, a period in which his ERA has grown from 3.24 to 4.30. He'll try to rebound in a road matchup with the Cubs next week.

The 35-year-old had a miserable July, failing to record a quality start and posting a 7.01 ERA in five outings, but he opened August with a fantastic performance against one of the league's best lineups. On the year, he owns a 3.95 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 124:50 K:BB across 130 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Athletics this weekend.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Grabs eighth win

Bassitt (8-7) earned the win over the Giants on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out six. Two of the three runs charged to Bassitt came across in the opening frame after he surrendered a leadoff single to LaMonte Wade and allowed him to advance to second on a passed ball. The right-hander then gave up back-to-back RBI singles with two outs, though he wouldn't permit another run until the fifth. He induced 10 whiffs in the contest but also walked four batters for the second consecutive start. Bassitt has now gone at least five innings in 13 straight outings and has won two of his last three.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: Surrenders four runs in defeat

Bassitt (7-7) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Bassitt got off to a terrible start in allowing six of the first seven batters he faced to reach base, resulting in three Astros runs. The veteran hurler bounced back to give up just one more run over the remainder of his five frames, but the first-inning damage was enough to send him to his seventh loss of the season. Bassitt had been rolling coming into Thursday, posting a 1.41 ERA across his previous five starts, and the four runs he yielded against Houston were his most since he gave up seven runs against the Dodgers on April 26. Bassitt's overall numbers this season have been pretty much in line with what fantasy managers have come to expect from him -- he has a 3.43 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 94:41 K:BB across 102.1 frames.

The 35-year-old has lowered his ERA over two full runs since the conclusion of April and now owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 91:37 K:BB over 97.1 innings this season. Bassitt allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out two during the loss to Boston. After producing a 5.03 over his first nine starts, he owns a strong 1.67 ERA over his last seven outings. Bassitt's season ERA sits at 3.45 alongside an 83:35 K:BB. Overall, he's 6-6 with a 3.56 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 75:32 K:BB across 78.1 innings this season. Bassitt is currently in line to face the Red Sox at home in his next outing.

  • Blue Jays' Chris Bassitt: On track for next start

Bassitt (neck) is listed as Toronto's probable starter for Sunday's game against the Pirates, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. The veteran right-hander made an early exit from his start Monday against the White Sox after pitching through neck spasms for five scoreless innings. It doesn't appear to be an ongoing issue, and Bassitt will attempt to build on his scoreless-innings streak of 12 frames versus the Pirates.

It was reported after the game that Bassitt was questionable to start due to the injury, but he toughed it out and pitched five dominant innings. It is encouraging that the 36-year-old was able to play through the injury, but the severity is still unknown. The right-hander will try to heal up for his next start, tentatively scheduled for this weekend versus Pittsburgh.
