The Blue Jays outrighted Cumptom to Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.
As anticipated, Cumpton went unclaimed when the Blue Jays exposed him to waivers after dropping him from the 40-man roster a few days earlier. He'll remain in the organization as rotation depth in the high minors, but it's not expected that Cumpton will pick up any starts with the big club over the final few weeks of the season.

Cumpton was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Monday.
Cumpton made just one appearance for the Blue Jays this season, allowing one run on three hits and two walks across 1.2 innings of work. He also posted a weak 5.40 ERA across 26.2 innings with Triple-A Buffalo. The 29-year-old will now take a spin through waivers to determine where he lands next.

Cumpton was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday.
Cumpton signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays in early July after a stint with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic league, and has since posted a 5.63 ERA over six appearances (three starts) at Triple-A. The 29-year-old could make a start for the Blue Jay on Thursday if he isn't needed out of the bullpen in the meantime, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Cumpton signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays on Thursday.
Cumpton was most recently with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League, where he had posted a 1.09 ERA over his last five starts. He'll report to Triple-A Buffalo and could start or work in long relief for the affiliate as he aims to earn his way back to the big leagues for the first time since 2014, when he was a member of the Pirates organization.

Cumpton never got into a spring-training game after being signed as a non-roster invitee in January. He was with the Indians' and Pirates' organizations in 2017.

Rangers' Brandon Cumpton: Signs minor-league deal with Rangers
Cumpton signed a minor-league deal with the Rangers, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
He underwent Tommy John surgery in March of 2015, and logged his first pro innings since the procedure last year in the Pirates' minor-league system -- 37.1 frames between three levels. Presumably fully recovered, he will attempt to make the team as a low-leverage reliever in spring training.

Cumpton (elbow) threw one inning during a sim game Friday, Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
This marked the first game-like action Cumpton has seen since 2014, as the 28-year-old continues to slowly work his way back from Tommy John and shoulder surgery. Cumpton remains without a timetable for return, though one should start to materialize as he continues to ramp up his rehab.

Pirates' Brandon Cumpton: Sent to minors camp
Cumpton (elbow) was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.
Cumpton last pitched in 2014 before undergoing Tommy John surgery and then shoulder surgery. The righty's throwing off the mound but has yet to face live batters. "He's worked so hard," general manager Neal Huntington said. "That's why we kept him in camp, kept him in this environment with pitching coach Ray Searage, to give him a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak." The 28-year-old has compiled a 4.02 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 100 major-league innings. While his numbers aren't terrific (including a 68:23 K:BB), he could serve as an in-season call-up for Pittsburgh in 2017.

Pirates' Brandon Cumpton: Continues to progress in rehab
Cumpton (elbow) threw off a slope Wednesday for the second time this spring and continues to steadily progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk cautions that Cumpton is not even close to appearing in games, but the improvements are a positive sign. The 28-year-old righty is hoping to see his first game action since 2014 this upcoming season, though that return may not come until well into the summer.

The 28-year-old hasn't appeared in a game since undergoing Tommy John in March of 2015, although it seems like he's back on the up-and-up in his rehab process.
