Player Outlook
After getting released by Arizona during the 2023 season, Carson Kelly came over to Detroit and enjoyed limited offensive success in a reserve role. Across 19 games with the Tigers, the catcher batted just .173 with a .271 on-base percentage. Kelly has never been much of an offensive threat during his career with just a .221 batting average over eight MLB seasons. The 29-year-old has at least displayed some power in the past, as he recorded 13 home runs in 98 games for the Diamondbacks back in 2021. Kelly had a career-high 18 long balls for Arizona in 2019. However, heading into 2024, the veteran seems unlikely to play enough to make much of a fantasy impact. Jake Rogers is entrenched as the top backstop in Detroit, making it likely that Kelly sees a similar workload to last year, when he appeared in 52 games. It's possible that Kelly sees more playing time if Rogers gets hurt, but even in that case, the former may not be a great fantasy target if he's unable to produce at the plate.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Taking seat Thursday

Kelly is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Guardians. Kelly will hit the bench for the third time in four games while the Tigers go with Jake Rogers behind the dish. Though Kelly has outproduced Rogers this season, the latter is sporting the hotter bat at the moment, as Rogers will head into Thursday's game having produced an extra-base knock in each of his last three starts.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Taking seat Monday

Kelly is absent from the lineup for Monday's contest in Cleveland. Kelly had started four of the last five games but will begin the series opener against the Guardians on the bench. Jake Rogers will handle catching duties for Detroit with Tarik Skubal on the mound.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Sitting Saturday

Kelly isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Saturday's game against Toronto. After going 0-for-3 with a strikeout during Friday's contest, Kelly will take a seat Saturday while Jake Rogers starts behind the dish and bats sixth.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Homers, reaches base three times

Kelly went 1-for-3 with two walks, a solo home run and an additional run scored Thursday against the Guardians. Kelly, starting for just the second time in five days as he continues to work in a timeshare with Jake Rogers, extended his modest hitting streak to six games while reaching base three times and homering for the third time during that stretch. It was the seventh home run of the season for Kelly, who has also added 28 RBI while producing a useful slash line of .247/.326/.418 through 178 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Losing work to Rogers

Kelly is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. Though Kelly has an active five-game hitting streak, the playing time behind the plate has tilted in favor of Jake Rogers lately. Rogers will make his third start in four games while Kelly sits.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Sitting again Monday

Kelly is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. The playing time at catcher had been swinging in Kelly's favor lately, but he'll end up hitting the bench for a second straight day Monday. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch may have just wanted to reward Jake Rogers with another turn behind the dish after Rogers reached base twice, recorded his first steal of the season and scored twice in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Reds.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Taking seat Sunday

Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds. With eight hits -- including three home runs -- in 28 at-bats over his last eight starts, Kelly seems to have at least temporarily overtaken Jake Rogers as the Tigers' preferred catcher. Though Rogers gets the nod behind the dish Sunday, Kelly had started in three of the previous four contests.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Pops grand slam Wednesday

Kelly went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Wednesday's 9-2 win over the Twins. Kelly was one of four Detroit players to go deep, and his third-inning shot was the biggest blow of the game. It was the catcher's sixth home run of the season and he's now up to 25 RBI. Kelly continues to split time behind the plate with Jake Rogers, though the former has been more effective offensively, which could lead to an increased role in the months ahead.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Tees off Sunday

Kelly went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 7-6 win over the Angels. Kelly provided an offensive jolt with his fifth home run of the year from the fifth spot in the lineup, one spot behind fellow catcher Jake Rogers, who served as the DH. The two players continue to split time behind the plate, which limits the fantasy upside of both of them. Kelly has been the more effective offensive player overall, however, as he has a .711 OPS compared to a .609 mark for Rogers.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Homers in win

Kelly went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a 2-1 win over the White Sox on Friday. Kelly's long ball off Erick Fedde in the second inning was the difference in the game. The homer was Kelly's second in four starts, and he has registered a solid .267/.353/.500 slash line in nine June contests. On the season, Kelly is slashing .238/.324/.373 with four home runs and 17 RBI over 142 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Carson Kelly: Doubles, drives in one Sunday

Kelly went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 8-4, 10-inning win over the Red Sox. Despite batting ninth, Kelly was able to deliver a solid performance as he extended his hitting streak to seven games. The 29-year-old is splitting time with Jake Rogers behind the plate, with the latter likely to draw the start Monday after Kelly caught all 10 innings Sunday. Both players' fantasy values are capped somewhat by the timeshare, though they can still be useful in deeper formats.
