Urshela is absent from the lineup for Thursday's season opener against the White Sox. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has opted to roll with Andy Ibanez at third base against southpaw Garrett Crochet. Urshela could still be the favorite to see the bulk of the starts at the hot corner, but they might come mostly versus right-handers initially.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Gio Urshela: Not locked in at third base yet
Urshela has yet to lock down the Tigers' third base job, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Petzold writes that Urshela remains "Plan A" at third base, but he's receiving competition from "Plan B" Matt Vierling, with Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez also in the mix but on the periphery. The Tigers might ultimately not settle on an everyday guy at the hot corner, especially since all of the players in the competition are capable of playing multiple positions.... See More ... Tigers' Gio Urshela: Not viewed as platoon bat
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Friday that he does not view Urshela as a strict platoon bat, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Urshela was much better against lefties than righties during an abbreviated sample in 2023, but his career splits are pretty even, as he's posted a .773 OPS versus southpaws and .734 OPS against right-handers. The 32-year-old will be in the mix to receive ample playing time at third base in Detroit and is also capable of filling in at all other infield positions. It's possible the Tigers' addition of Urshela will lead to Matt Vierling spending more time in the outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Gio Urshela: Signs with Detroit
Urshela signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Urshela slashed .299/.329/.374 with 24 RBI in 228 plate appearances with the Angels last year before a fractured pelvis put an early end to his season in June. Now fully recovered from his injury, the 32-year-old infielder will join his fourth team in as many years. Though he primarily serves as a third baseman, Urshela has experience at all four infield positions, and he gives Detroit a bat capable of finding success versus left-handed pitchers (.790 OPS since 2021).... Angels' Gio Urshela: Ditches crutches
Urshela (pelvis) said Sunday that he resumed walking without the aid of crutches earlier in the week, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Urshela has been out since mid-June with a fractured left pelvis, an injury that the Angels announced will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Fortunately for Urshela, he'll avoid surgery to address the injury, and he said Sunday that he should be in store for a normal offseason. The 31-year-old is set to become a free agent this winter and will likely have to settle for a one-year deal on the open market.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Out for season
Urshela doesn't need surgery on his fractured pelvis, but he will miss the remainder of the season, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Urshela took an awkward tumble while running to first base which forced him out of Thursday's game against Texas. The good news is that he won't need to undergo surgery, so he could be ready for the start of spring training next year, but the book appears to be closed for Urshela this season after he slashed .299/.329/.374 with 24 RBI over 228 plate appearances.... Angels' Gio Urshela: Visiting with specialists
Urshela (pelvis) visited with a specialist earlier in the week and will see another on Wednesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. The Angels will have a better sense of his timeline after the visit Wednesday, Bollinger notes. Urshela was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left pelvis fracture before Friday's game. The veteran infielder will miss at least another week, but it's possible this will be an injury that keeps him out of action for a longer period.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Shelved with pelvis fracture
Urshela was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left pelvis fracture, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Urshela sustained the injury in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Rangers, when he stumbled awkwardly over first base while trying to beat out a double-play ball. The Angels haven't yet provided a timeline for Urshela's return, but his move to the IL means he'll be out for at least a week and a half. The Angels called up Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Urshela's spot on the active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Could be headed for IL
Urshela (hip) was seen on crutches after Thursday's game against the Rangers, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Urshela is dealing with a hip injury after awkwardly stumbling over first base while trying to beat out a double play in the first inning. There hasn't been any official move yet, by manager Phil Nevin suggested that Urshela could end up on the injured list in the coming days.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Exits after awkward fall
Urshela exited Thursday's game against the Rangers with an apparent lower-body injury, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Urshela stumbled over first base while trying to beat out a double play in the first inning. He remained in the contest briefly but was ultimately pulled before having to field his position in the second inning. There are no additional details about the nature of the injury, but Jared Walsh entered the game at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Back in lineup
Urshela (back) is starting at first base Thursday against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Back soreness kept Urshela out of the Angels' last two games, but the issue appears to have subsided ahead of Thursday's contest. Urshela holds just a .400 OPS over the past seven days, but he will fill in at first base for Jared Walsh, who hasn't recorded a hit since June 2.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Sitting out again Wednesday
Urshela (back) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Rangers, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. He's now been out of the lineup for four straight contests and five of the last six while dealing with a back problem. Anthony Rendon's return has had an effect on Urshela's playing time, as well.... Angels' Gio Urshela: Remains out of lineup
Urshela (back) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Rangers. Urshela has been out of the lineup five times in the last seven games at least in part due to a back injury. He's considered day-to-day. Brandon Drury is at first base and Luis Rengifo is at second.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Battling back issue
Urshela has been dealing with a back injury, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The injury explains why he's out of the lineup Monday against the Rangers for the fourth time in six games, although it could also be in part due to Anthony Rendon's recent return from the injured list. At this point, Urshela's injury seems like a day-to-day situation.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Handling utility role
Urshela is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. On the bench for the fourth time in six games, Urshela looks to have moved into a utility role in the wake of Anthony Rendon's recent return from the 10-day injured list. Since Urshela has performed at just below a league-average level as a hitter (97 wRC+, .313 woBA) this season and is capable of playing all four infield spots, he should still be in line for a handful of starts per week.... Angels' Gio Urshela: Back in starting lineup
Urshela (back) is hitting eighth and playing first base versus the Mariners on Saturday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Urshela was a late scratch from the lineup Friday against Seattle, but it was described as precautionary and the infielder is feeling well enough to go for Saturday's contest. Jared Walsh heads back to the bench with Urshela handling first base.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Scratched with back tightness
Urshela was scratched from the lineup Friday against the Mariners due to lower back tightness, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. This will thrust the struggling Jared Walsh into the Angels' starting lineup at first base. It sounds like a minor issue for Urshela, who has posted a .304/.335/.382 slash line in 221 plate appearances this season while playing nearly every day at various spots around the infield.... Angels' Gio Urshela: Homers, drives in three in loss
Urshela went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBI in Saturday's 8-5 extra-inning loss to the Marlins. Each of Urshela's hits knocked in a run, and he came up a triple shy of the cycle. The infielder hasn't supplied much power this season, as his solo shot was just his second homer in 49 contests on the year, and he's added just seven doubles. He's at least made consistent contact lately, hitting safely in 10 of his last 12 games to raise his slash line to .318/.337/.392 with 23 RBI, 19 runs scored and three stolen bases through 184 plate appearances.... Angels' Gio Urshela: Not in Thursday's lineup
Urshela is absent from the Angels' lineup for Thursday's game in Baltimore. Luis Rengifo will handle third base and Brandon Drury will be at first while Urshela gets some rest. He had started the previous 11 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Gio Urshela: Two hits in loss
Urshela went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 7-3 loss against the Orioles. Urshela led off the fifth inning with a double before scoring on Zach Neto's base hit. The 31-year-old Urshela would add a second hit in the sixth, driving in Matt Thaiss to cut Anaheim's deficit to 4-3. Urshela has swung that bat well recently, slashing .341/.357/.415 over his last 11 games. He'd been filling a utility role for the Angels, though he'll take over as the regular third baseman while Anthony Rendon (groin) is sidelined. Urshela is batting .295 with one homer and a .667 OPS through 151 plate appearances on the campaign.... See More ... See Less
