Lopes was invited to spring training over the past three seasons with the Rangers, and he will get the chance to appear in the Marlins' camp in 2020. The 27-year-old has yet to appear in the majors, but he was effective with Triple-A Nashville in 2019, hitting .272/.364/.426 with five home runs and 33 RBI.
Lopes is working on catching this spring, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports.
Lopes has been mostly an infielder to this point in his career, also spending a bit of time in the outfield corners. Infield-to-catcher transitions are not unheard of but are uncommon. Lopes hit a respectable .261/.365/.408 with 12 homers and 16 steals for Triple-A Round Rock last season, numbers which would look all the more interesting behind the plate.

Lopes' contract includes an invitation to spring training. To this point, Lopes has spent his entire career in the Blue Jays' farm system, with the bulk of the 2017 season being at Triple-A Buffalo. Over 92 games with Buffalo, he slashed .261/.349/.402. He'll likely play a similar role with Texas and provide organizational depth.
