Motter signed a one-year, major-league contract with the Cardinals on Wednesday and was added to their active 26-man roster, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
St. Louis removed Motter from its 40-man roster this past Sunday, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will now get another shot in the big leagues following the demotion of Jordan Walker. Motter, 33, is a career .192/.264/.310 hitter in 466 plate appearances at the MLB level.

Motter cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Motter was cleared off the 40-man roster after hitting just .222/.300/.333 over plate appearances and being designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Sunday. Motter started at second base, batted leadoff and went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, one RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 11-10 loss to the Rays.
Motter provided a spark atop the order, but his glove did as much damage to the Red Sox as the Rays did. He committed throwing and fielding errors that led to a pair of unearned runs -- Tampa Bay scored six unearned runs in all. The 31-year-old has dominated Triple-A this season, slashing .335/.460/.759 with 24 home runs and 57 RBI in 265 at-bats. After being cut by the Tigers in mid-May, Motter quickly moved on to the independent ranks to continue his career.
