  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Begins throwing program

Rodriguez threw from 60 feet Tuesday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.

Tuesday marked the first time Rodriguez has thrown since straining his left lat March 19. There is still no clear timeline for a return, but one may emerge as the 30-year-old lefty continues progressing through his rehab program. The Diamondbacks also signed Jordan Montgomery to a one-year deal Tuesday, which will allow the team to be more patient with Rodriguez's recovery.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Shut down with strained lat

Rodriguez will begin the season on the injured list after being diagnosed with a strained left lat, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

He suffered the injury during his last Cactus League outing Tuesday. Rodriguez will be shut down from throwing until he's asymptomatic, so there is no timeline for when he might make his season debut. Ryne Nelson and Tommy Henry had been competing for the final spot in the Diamondbacks' rotation, but they now will probably both be needed to start some games.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: No MRI yet

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said the medical staff was "encouraged" after examining Rodriguez (lat) on Wednesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Rodriguez was removed from Tuesday's Cactus League appearance with left lat tightness and still felt some discomfort while being examined Wednesday, although it wasn't as bad. The pitcher has not undergone an MRI at this point, although that's still possible. The Diamondbacks have not yet ruled Rodriguez out for Opening Day, but a stay on the injured list remains possible even after the positive exam.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Dealing with lat tightness

Rodriguez exited Tuesday's Cactus League game against the Cubs due to left lat tightness.

Rodriguez seemed to be wincing on the mound while warming up ahead of the second inning, and the nature of his injury is now known. The D-backs didn't specify how severe Rodriguez's injury is, but the 30-year-old lefty will presumably sit out the Diamondbacks' next several games to recover.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Exits game early

Rodriguez was removed from Tuesday's spring game against the Cubs with a potential injury, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

After getting through the first inning of Tuesday's contest, Rodriguez seemed to experience some discomfort while warming up before the second frame. It's unclear what exactly was bothering Rodriguez, but the D-backs will take a closer look at him and should provide details in the near future.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Up to four innings

Rodriguez allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four over four innings in Saturday's spring start against the Reds.

Rodriguez took the mound for a third time during Cactus League action and recorded his best results. The left-hander threw 55 pitches and told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that he felt about 80 percent of the regular-season version of himself. To get that extra 20 percent, Rodriguez wants to get his fastball velocity up. "I noticed today it was like 90-92 (mph), so like 100% is 91-94 (mph) ... but location-wise, I feel like it was 100%, the pitches were right where I wanted," Rodriguez said. The pitcher has allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits and four walks while striking out 10 over eight spring innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Lots of traffic in second start

Rodriguez allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over three innings in Sunday's spring start against Milwaukee.

The Brewers ambushed Rodriguez early, taking a 3-0 lead three batters into the game. The left-hander had base traffic in all three innings but managed to avoid further damage with the help of infield defense. The results look similar to his first Cactus League start, when he gave up four runs in an inning, but Rodriguez told Michael McDermott of SI.com that he felt better Sunday. "I threw three innings today, I feel great," Rodriguez said. "I feel I'm on a really good pace for the start of the season." While a 15.75 ERA over four innings might cause concern, it should be noted that spring games are less about results than for getting pitches in shape, working on command and building up pitch counts.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Hammered in first outing

Rodriguez allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over one-plus innings in Tuesday's spring start against Texas.

Rodriguez, who signed a four-year deal with Arizona during the offseason, had a rough debut in a Diamondbacks uniform. Just 20 of his 38 offerings landed in the zone, and the left-hander gave up two home runs. Despite the results and shaky command, Rodriguez focused on the positives. "My command was a little off, but overall I was feeling good," the pitcher told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. "My velocity was right where we wanted it, like 90-92 mph up to 93 sometimes, so overall everything was good. Just location, a little bit, but that's what we've got spring training for." Rodriguez should get another four or five Cactus League starts to build up his pitch count and work on command.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: On bump Tuesday

Rodriguez will make his spring debut against the Rangers on Tuesday.

Rodriguez had been scheduled to start the Diamondbacks' opener last Friday, but the team changed plans and had the left-hander throw live batting practice on the back fields. He's expected to serve as the No. 3 starter once the regular season begins.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Throws on back field

Rodriguez threw live batting practice on a back field Friday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

An initial plan to have Rodriguez start Friday's Cactus League opener was scrapped, because the left-hander wanted a more controlled environment. "He felt good enough and might have wanted [to throw] more pitches," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. There is no update on when Rodriguez will take the mound in a live setting.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Scratched from spring start

Rodriguez will no longer start the Diamondbacks' spring opener Friday against Colorado, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Rodriguez will have to wait a bit longer to make his first appearance in a Diamondbacks uniform, as he will instead throw a live batting practice on a backfield Friday. Fellow southpaw Tommy Henry will get the nod to start against the Rockies in Rodriguez's place.

  • Diamondbacks' Eduardo Rodriguez: Getting ball for spring opener

Rodriguez is scheduled to start the Diamondbacks' spring opener Friday versus the Rockies, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

Rodriguez will likely work just an inning or two before turning the game over to the bullpen. After joining Arizona on a four-year, $74 million deal in free agency this winter, Rodriguez is projected to open the season as the No. 3 starter behind Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly as the Diamondbacks look to build on last season's surprise run to the National League pennant.
