Player Outlook
Marcus Semien needed a strong final four months to rebound from a slow start in his first season with the Rangers. He was much steadier in his second year and easily better overall with an .826 OPS in 2023 which was nearly 100 points higher than his 2022 mark. Semien's Statcast page was underwhelming as it always tends to be, but he's mastered the art of pulling flyballs down the line and just over the wall to the point that it's impossible to doubt that he simply has that skill. He also cut his strikeout rate in 2023 to 14.6 percent, allowing him to hit for a solid .276 average even with all the weakly- to moderately-struck flyballs mixed in. Finally, Semien continues to be the modern day Iron Man, leading the league in plate appearances for the third straight season. He's about as safe as an early-round pick gets.

Semien went 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Astros. Semien endured a miserable 4-for-47 (.085) stretch before getting the bat going over the last four games. He hit safely in all four, going 8-for-15 (.533) with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. • Rangers' Marcus Semien: Belts game-winning homer

Semien went 1-for-3 with a walk, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rays. With the Rangers down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Semien got hold of a Kevin Kelly two-seamer on the inner half of the plate and drove it over the left-field wall for the game-winning hit. The second baseman snapped a 22-game homer drought with the blast, a stretch in which he'd stumbled to a .143/.196/.176 slash line. Semien's current .679 OPS on the season would be his lowest mark since the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, but he's still on pace for his fourth straight campaign with at least 20 home runs and 80 RBI, and the 33-year-old has plenty of time to kick his offense into a higher gear.

  • Rangers' Marcus Semien: Drives in three in loss

Semien went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI and one stolen base in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Mariners. Semien got the Rangers on the board with an RBI double in the fifth inning and added a two-out, two-run single in the ninth, but the comeback fell short. This was his third multi-hit effort in June, though it was his first since June 3. The second baseman is slashing .265/.330/.438 with 11 home runs, 40 RBI, 50 runs scored and three stolen bases over 69 contests this season. It's not a surprise that his speed has declined in his age-33 campaign, but the good news is the rest of his game appears to be in line with his career norms.

Though Semien isn't nursing a new injury, manager Bruce Bochy told Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News that the 33-year-old will be getting a couple days of rest -- Texas is off Thursday -- before returning to the lineup Friday in Miami since he's been playing a little banged up after he was involved in a collision in the outfield with teammate Adolis Garcia in a May 18 game. Ezequiel Duran will step in at second base in Semien's stead Wednesday, while designated hitter Travis Jankowski takes over Semien's spot atop the batting order.
